Framework: KU SPED Classroom Observation Rubric

Edthena Feedback
Establishing a Culture for Learning
01:51 - One of your strengths is social verbal praise. During 1-1(2-1) teaching sessions, do
they also earn stickers toward the additional reinforcer
o I am very lucky and my biggest group is 3:1, each group earns stickers, no matter the
size.

Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources

03:31 - What type of strategy is teaching "memory tricks"? Is this a practice that you use
with all of your students? - this is a good area to connect in your journals.
12:15 - Do you utilize direct instruction for most or all of your language lessons?
o When they are as low as Karly is, I do. She is reading at a second grade level and is in
fifth grade. For my sixth grade boys I use a mixture of direct instruction, interactive
journals, independent practice, and guided reading stories.

Using Questioning, Prompts and Discussion

06:29 - gestural prompt (hand toward Carly) is a good cue for the student. Do you use these
type of cues in whole group teaching?
14:45 - I would suggest changing the term "tricky letter" when you talk about letters that
might be difficult. With some students this could cause additional stress when they see that
letter.
20:00 - Agree with your journal comment - more details for him would be helpful
25:05 - I would suggest giving a few more instructions. Both seemed apprehensive and
unsure about the expectations.

Engaging Students in Learning

08:31 - good visual story using things that she has prior knowledge of.
21:59 - Could you incorporate your new student into the activity to work together?
o Barton is a one on one program. I had him coming in after we finished, but he has time
built in for handwriting on his IEP (non OT) and this is the only time I'm able to
service those minutes without him missing out on another subject.

Organizing Physical Space

19:42 - I like that he has the option of sitting on the exercise ball. Is this in his IEP? Do all
students have this option? How does this help him?
o It is not in his IEP, but all of my students have the option to sit on them. It helps him to
get out his "wiggles" without causing him or other students distractions.

Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness

27:28 - Is your class the only room in which he can use the exercise ball? He seems overly
attached and does not want to let it go even with SmartBoard work

No Framework Topic
17:57 - I thought you were teaching sign when I heard you say this earlier. Finger spelling is
a term that is used in ASL.

Edthena Summarizing Thought

Julia - I like how you incorporate your students' prior knowledge and actions into your verb
lesson. You have great interactions with your students. They appear to enjoy your class and have
trust that you will follow through on instructions. Good job
