A Message from the General Director

Dear Parents,
On behalf of the Management and Staff of Manarat Jeddah International School, I should like to extend a
very warm welcome to you at the start of this new academic year. We look forward to another prosperous
year ahead in which your children, with the guidance of our qualified staff and with your valued
cooperation, will realise their full academic potential, insha Allah.
It gives us great pleasure to announce that our students have once again excelled in the Cambridge
International IGCSE and A-Level Examinations. Over 63A* and 90 A grades were achieved at IGCSE level,
the highest percentage for the last ten years. In fact, the percentage of students who scored grades
ranging from A* to C is 97% (compared to 87% last year), which is far higher than the national average in
the United Kingdom and the international average worldwide. We are extremely proud of our students and
the dedicated teachers who guided them to success. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the parents of
these outstanding students, who indeed are role models and an inspiration to their peers in the lower
grades.
In accordance with our Vision and Mission, we as an institution are constantly striving to improve the level
of education and the quality of services that we provide to our community .Therefore our students in
Grades 9 will be given the option of choosing either the American educational stream leading to SAT
qualifications, or continuing in the British steam leading to IGCSE qualifications.

As in previous years, we will continue to implement both internal (IST) and external (MAP) standardized
tests twice a year to accurately measure and evaluate our students progress and the effectiveness of our
educational programs, resources and procedures.
We continue to employ external, internationally recognized assessments to ensure that the curricula we
teach match updated challenging international education standards of the 21 st century and to ensure that
our students are on par with their peers in schools around the world.
Furthermore, as outlined in our Vision, we seek to provide holistic education which builds exemplary
character in addition to academic excellence. To this end, we will once again offer a comprehensive
activities program throughout the year. Our students will be afforded the opportunity to participate in
events of a sporting, spiritual, social and cultural nature aimed at developing them into confident, well-
rounded individuals with an international perspective.
We truly believe that communication is the key to a successful educational experience. Together, we will
continue to improve the quality of our school and provide the best for the children of MJIS. Education is a
partnership between the school, students, parents and the community. All children are more successful
when we work as a team to achieve our educational goals.
Thank you for placing your faith and trust in us.

Dr. Walid Domyati

diagnosis.
4. Mid-Year Exams: thorough assessments of all skills and concepts taught throughout
the 1st term.
5. End-of-Year Exams: thorough assessments of all skills and concepts taught
throughout the 2nd term.

External Methods of Assessment

1. MAP (Measures of academic progress): for all students of grades 1-9. These are unique
standardized tests created by a well-known American educational organization called
NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association). These tests adapt to your childs level of
learning, and as a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and
maintain a positive attitude toward testing. There is no passing or failing with MAP,
but rather, it allows us to monitor each students skill level.
Each school year, students in grades 1-9 will take the tests in English, Mathematics,
and Science. Following each testing period, teachers will receive detailed reports
showing them exactly which skills their students have mastered, and which skills need
greater focus and further development. Please visit NWEAs informative website for
more details- www.nwea.org
2. Cambridge Checkpoint: For all students of grade 8. Cambridge Checkpoint is an
external examination in English, Maths and Science that serves as an accurate
indication of the students academic level prior to entering the more challenging
system of IGCSEs in grade 9. The exams will be held in April 2017.

3. Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE and A Level) :

For students of grades 9-12
Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the
worlds most popular international qualification for 14 16 year olds. Created by CIE
in 1985, and based on best practice in the UK, Cambridge IGCSE is available in over 70
subjects. It equips students not only with knowledge of specific subjects, but also
with problem solving and critical thinking skills, and an ability to work independently
and as part of a team.
Cambridge IGCSE is internationally recognised by universities in the UK and overseas
as equivalent grade-for-grade to UK GCSE learn more at www.cie.org.uk
Cambridge IGCSE is an excellent preparation for both A/AS Level and the
International Baccalaureate Diploma. The standard is benchmarked to UK GCSE. CIE
runs regular comparability checks through the Cambridge Assessment Research
Division and shares examiners with its sister organisation OCR to make sure
standards are the same.
Cambridge IGCSE is taken in 127 countries and suits both national and international
teaching contexts. The syllabuses use international examples and avoid terminology
only used in the UK. Non-native speakers of English are treated fairly.

School policies for the academic year 1438-39 / 2017-18

In line with our school vision to create an atmosphere which encourages high educational achievements, we will be
implementing the following policies:

General Conduct

1. All students must abide by the laws and regulations of Islam and the school code of conduct whenever at
school and whilst using the school transport services.
2. All students must abide by any additional/specific rules and instructions related to conduct during all after
school activities and educational/recreational trips outside of the school.
3. No students are allowed to leave the school premises during school timings except through the official
school system involving official, documented approval of both the school administration and the
parent/guardian of the students concerned.
4. Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras or any other digital/smart device
to school without specific authorization from the school administration and parental approval. Any non-
compliance of this means that all financial losses caused due to theft or damage will be the sole
responsibility of the student and parent/guardian concerned. Furthermore, the school administration has
the full right to confiscate any unauthorized devices brought to school by any student and hold on to them
until parents/guardians are contacted and appropriate disciplinary action taken.
5. Students are not allowed to bring footballs, basketballs, tennis balls, bats, rackets etc. to school.
6. Unauthorized and unsupervised playing will result in the balls/equipment being confiscated and appropriate
disciplinary action.
7. The school administration reserves the right to suspend (and in serious cases, even expel) any student
caught in possession of or attempting to spread, via any means, obscene material of any form (images, texts,
videos etc.) inside the school premises or on the school buses. Each case will be studied individually and the
level of punitive action will be in accordance with the severity of the offence committed.
8. Students are strictly forbidden from bringing any dangerous items to school such as knives, chemicals, highly
flammable material etc. that may pose a potential threat to the health and safety of the people in the
school. Any student caught violating this will face strict disciplinary action that may also involve the police.
9. The school administration reserves the right to send students home if they attend school without the official
school uniform, or boys who arrive to school with excessively long hair (beyond the ears and back of the
neck), or partly shaven heads or any other extreme styles that do not conform with Islamic modesty.
10. Any incident of vandalism or theft of school, student or staff property will be investigated thoroughly. If a
student is proven guilty, the parents/guardians will bear the responsibility of any financial consequences of
repair or replacement of the damaged or lost item.

Examinations, Projects and tests

11. Parents/guardians can request to see their sons/daughters Mid-year or End-of-year exam paper after it has
been marked, but under no circumstances will they be given the paper to take home nor will they be
allowed to take a copy.
12. The general policy for progress tests is that no re-sit will be provided for students who underperform.
13. Any student who does not submit assigned projects by the set deadline without a valid reason, risks losing
marks for late submission. Failure to produce a project will result in zero marks recorded on the report card.
14. Any student caught cheating or even attempting to cheat during any formal assessment, by whatever
means, may have all their marks nullified for that particular assessment and also lose the right to a re-sit.
Each case will be judged individually and the level of punitive action will be in accordance with the extent of
the violation committed.
15. The overall pass mark for any grade year is 50% per subject, after which the student will automatically be
promoted to the next grade. Any student who fails to achieve this in any subject, will be given an
opportunity to re-sit their Mid-Year and/or End-of-year examination after all examinations have been
completed for that academic year. The marks achieved in the re-sit will then be used to replace the original
marks achieved in that subject. Failure to achieve 50% after the re-sit examinations may result in the student
not being promoted to the next grade. Each case will be studied individually and judged accordingly by the
school administration to decide the most appropriate course of action.

Textbooks, uniform and bags

16. Every student is entitled to a single copy of each textbook/workbook for his/her grade as per allocated by
the school administration, one school bag and one set of P.E. uniform. The school administration is not
responsible for lost/stolen or damaged equipment once the student has received the items mentioned.
17. Most of the textbooks issued in grades Seven, Nine and Eleven are two year course books and so will not be
issued a second time in grades Eight, Ten and Twelve respectively. It is the responsibility of the student to
ensure that these books remain in good condition throughout the two years they are intended for.
18. All items mentioned above will only be issued to the student after the complete fees for the first semester
have been paid in full.
19. Parents/guardians must purchase and ensure that their sons/daughters wear the school uniform supplied by
the school.

Arrival and dismissal

20. Parents/guardians are responsible to ensure that their sons/daughters arrive at school on time (or are ready
to be picked up by the school bus from the agreed location). All students should be at school, at the very
latest, a few minutes before the commencement of the morning assembly or morning tutorial.
21. The earliest time students can arrive, or be dropped off at school is half an hour before the commencement
of the morning assembly or morning tutorial as the supervisors do not arrive before this time. The school
administration is not responsible for the health and safety of any student inside the school before this time.
22. For students who arrive via private transport, it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that
their sons/daughters actually enter the school premises and via the official gates designated for their
grade/section.
23. The school administration is responsible for the health and safety of all students once they have entered the
school premises at the correct time in the morning until they leave at the official home time.
24. For students who arrive via the school buses, the school administration is responsible for their health and
safety from the moment they enter the school bus until they are dropped off after school at their homes.
25. Parents/guardians who do not use the school buses must ensure that their sons/daughters are picked up
immediately (or leave themselves in cases where they are old enough to walk home or use a taxi) at home
time as supervising staff will only remain on duty for a maximum of half an hour after the official home time.

Sickness and accidents

26. The parents/guardians must inform the school administration if their son/daughter suffers from any sort of
mental or physical illness and provide the relevant student counsellor with all necessary medical
information/reports/medication etc. so the correct action can be taken promptly in case of an emergency.
27. If a student becomes sick or incurs a minor injury during school timings and whilst on the school premises,
he/she will receive basic first aid by trained members of staff. The parents/guardians will also be notified
and given the option of deciding whether their son/daughter should continue the day at school or arrange
for them to be collected and taken home early.
28. If a student incurs a serious injury or becomes seriously ill, needing emergency medical treatment, the
school administration will contact the parent/guardian via the contact details supplied during registration
and arrange for the student to be taken immediately using staff or school transport, or via an ambulance if
deemed necessary, to the hospital of the parents/guardians choice.
29. If the parent/guardian does not respond immediately, the student will be taken to the nearest hospital
(Jedani Hospital if the issue occurs at school) for treatment.
30. In all cases, the parent/guardian is responsible to cover any costs due to treatment at any hospital.

Fees

31. The school administration reserves the right to withhold all official documentation such as report cards,
ministry cards, CIE certificates, statements of results and student files if the complete school fees have not
been settled within the dates/periods stated in the contract for student enrolment in schools document
which states that the first instalment should be paid before the first semester commences and the second
instalment before the second semester commences.

Extracurricular Activities

The importance and benefits of school extracurricular activities

The importance of extracurricular activities at school is well established. These activities
must exist to complement the schools academic curriculum, meet the spiritual, social,
physical, emotional and physical needs of our students and enhance their overall
educational experience.

Extracurricular activities provide a setting to become involved and to interact with other
students, which in turn has a positive impact on the students emotional, intellectual and
inter-personal development. By working together with other individuals, students learn to
negotiate, communicate, manage conflict and lead others. Taking part in these out-of-
classroom activities helps students to understand the importance of critical thinking skills,
time management and academic, physical and intellectual competence. Working outside of
the classroom with diverse groups of individuals allows for students to gain more self-
confidence and multicultural awareness.

Extracurricular involvement allows students to link academic knowledge with practical

experience, which leads to a better understanding of their own abilities and talents.
These involved students develop into well rounded individuals with enhanced skills and
superior levels of self-confidence, making them more attractive to both establishments of
further education and future employers.

Student involvement in extracurricular activities also positively impacts educational

attainment. Students who are actively engaged are more likely to have higher educational
ambitions than uninvolved students.
