mixed and compounded on the farm. Meat & Bonemeal has
been used for as long as I can remember as a source of protein
and to balance the diet. It was fed voluntarily until it had to be
withdrawn for a period of time in 1996/1997 due to the crisis in
the Beef Industry brought about by BSE. The then Government
(1996/1997) made an order that Meat & Bonemeal could only
be purchased under licence. An application was made and a
number of inspections took place to assess the facilities to
ensure that it was free of non-ruminant animals. On inspection
it was found to be a stand-alone facility with no cattle sheds, no
cattle crushes, no hay or sileage barns. It met the criteria being
stand-alone. This was the main reason that the Meat &
Bonemeal Licence was approved and issued in the name of Mr.
Patrick O'Keeffe, a Director of Ballylough Milling.
