& Politics, vol. 53, no. 3, July 2017, pp. 784-788. EBSCOhost,
doi:10.1017/S1049096517000592.
This article by Justin Buckley Dyer is helpful in the aspect that it examines how political
science became its own discourse community and developed into the field that it is
today. Written in the form of personal narrative, it is filled with information that will be
crucial in analyzing the discourse community of political science, and will help me to
better explain it in the project. Because this is a personal narrative, the language and
rhetoric is much more casual and potentially biased, even though it remains scholarly and
informative.

Conducted by Casey Dominguez, Kieth Smith, and Michael Williams, the study focuses
opposed to non-political science majors. It examines how majoring in this filed effects
personal values and beliefs, as well as how likely political science majors are to engage in
politics outside of the classroom. Since this was a study, the language used is matter-of-
fact, there are few opinions and it focuses primarily on the realists and implications of the
study.

Written by Daniel Drezner and published earlier this year, the article from The

Barrilleaux, Charles, and Carlisle Rainey. n.d. "The Politics of Need: Examining Governors'
Decisions to Oppose the "Obamacare" Medicaid Expansion." State Politics & Policy Quarterly
Written by my public policy professor Charles Barrilleaux along with Carlisle Rainey,
This article helps me with my essay because it highlights how the delayed
implementation can have serious consequences on those who need insurance coverage at
affordable prices. The language and sentence structure is elevated and intricate,
suggesting the is was written for those with extensive knowledge of the subject matter.

This article by Mary Ellen Klass explains Senator Andy Gardiners motivations in
pursing special needs rights through legislation. It explains how he began advocating on
behalf of his son, and highlights some of his accomplishments. The article includes
quotes from Gardiner, as well as commentary from the reporter who interviewed him.
Written for the Tampa Bay Times, its written for the average newspaper reader.
Price, Margaret S., and Damon Martin. "The support costs of a special needs parent." American
One of my more interesting sources, this article explores special needs parents rather than
children. It highlights the high costs they face along with the costs of childcare. While not
specifically related to children, it shows the importance of addressing issues now, since

The article examines how Utah is attempting to reform healthcare to make it more
accessible and include special needs individuals, but how they fall short in some places.
The article gives a good overview of efforts to address special needs issues, and some
ways to go about it. The articles language is sophisticated, and addresses a specific topic,
but is written so that it can be understood by those not experts in the field.
Rowh, Mark. Great Jobs for Political Science Majors. Lincolnwood, [Chicago], Ill: NTC
While not an article, this book was still useful in answering some of my questions.
Written by Mark Rowb, it explains steps for getting job after college, showcases some
careers that are available, and explains some skills and traits that can help you secure a
job. The book is written so that any college graduate is able to understand it, so the

My final source was pretty interesting, as it examined the ties between job performance
and political beliefs. It explained how the beliefs can influence many aspects of a career,
and affect your overall success. The article is from a psychology journal, so uses some
psychological terms and language that those in the field are familiar with.
