* Dipan-Pachan * Snehan * Swedan
First purva-karmas are Dipan and Pachan,
means carminative and digestive actions. It is
basically meant for Niramikaran ( removal of
Ama ). Unless and until Ama is removed from
the associated dosha, chances of good recovery
from the disease are very less. This is an unique
approach for the treatment in Ayurveda. So for
Dipan and Pachan specific diet and medicines
are prescribed for certain period.
Snehan
Another two procedures are snehan and svedan.
Snehan can be bahya (External) as well as antah
(Internal). Snehan means oil therapy. The use of
oily substances for the treatment is Snehan.
Plant or animal fats are used for this purpose.
Sesame oil is the best plant oil because it calms
Vata, without aggravating Kapha. Other fats are
used; Ghee, Vasa (muscle fat) and Majja (Bone-
marrow).

Svedan - Fomentation
A therapy by which a person is made
to sweat is svedan. Sveda (sweat) is
considered a waste product of the
body. Snehan (tail therapy) should be
followed by Svedan. Svedan is the
best treatment for reducing vata and
kapha. Herbal medicines may be
added further to loosen the toxins from
the individual.
Svedan liquefies the aggravated doshas
and increases their movement into the
koshtha (trunk, gastro-intestinal tract)
from the shakhas (extremities). After
three to seven days of snehan and
svedan, the doshas become well
"ripened." Then the aggravated doshas
can be eliminated by pradhankarma
(operative procedures) viz., vaman etc.

VAMAN :
For kapha imbalance
It helps to cure diseases like chronic cold,
cough, bronchial asthma, diabetes, acne,
eczema, psoriasis and dandruff etc.
Vaman means therapeutic vomiting. Vaman is a
bio-chemical and bio-physical process that take
place inside the body to normilizing vitiated

Patient is asked to take medicated ghee
or oil according to health problems, usually
for 4 days prior to Vaman. On 5th day full
body herbal massage and herbal steam bath
is given. On 6th day, on the day of Vaman,
after snehan (internal snehpan & abhyang
etc.) and svedan (fomentation), three to four
glasses of licorice-fant, milk or salt water is
administered, then specific medicines are
administered in prescribed doses to induce
vomiting - without straining to the patient.

What to do after Vaman?
Complete bed rest for a day
Post Vaman Diet : special diet like Liquid
diet or warm porridge of rice with salt is
advised for three to seven days. Samsarjan

Virechan / Basties / Nasya / Rakta-mokshan
VIRECHAN :
For pitta imbalance
It helps to cure heart burn, urticaria,
eczema, psoriasis, headache, migraine,
indigestion, constipation, abdominal gas
etc.
Virechan means therapeutic purging.
Virechan is a bio-chemical and bio-physical
process that take place inside the body to
normalizing aggravated pitta.
Patient is asked to take medicated ghee
or oil according to health problems, usually
for 4 days prior to Virechana. On 5th and 6th
day full body herbal massages and herbal
steam baths are given. On 7th day, on the day
of Virechana, after snehan (internal snehpan
& abhyang etc.) and svedan (fomentation),
suitable purgation is administered, then
specific medicines are administered in
prescribed doses to induce purging - without
straining to the patient.

BASTI :
For vata imbalance

It helps to cure joint pains, arthritis,
lumbago, digestive disorders, intestinal
disorders, colitis, obesity and menstrual
disorders in women.
Basti = 50% of Chikitsa

Basti means the introduction of herbal
preparations in liquid form into the rectum,
just like enema. Basti, is the most effective
treatment of vata disorders. Vata is described
as the main causative factor in the occurrence
of diseases and it is mainly located in the
large intestine. The medication introduced
from rectum reaching to descending colon of
large intestine, controls vata instantly.
This treatment is a combination of Abhyang
(massage) and svedan (steam-bath), Basti.

BASTI
Common Types of Basti Karma :
Niruha Basti (Enemas by medical
decoctions) : it eliminates all corrupted
doshas, and cures the diseases.
Anuvasan Basti (Enemas given with

medicated oil ) : it also works as energizer.
Matra Basti ((Enemas given with medicated oil

in low dose) : it works as rejuvenator, immuno-
promoter, nutrient

Benefits of Basti treatment :
1. Basti eliminates vata and mala.
2. Eliminates all dosha from pakwashaya.

6. It increases all tissues (dhatu)- promoting
tissue metabolism.
7. It brightens complexion.
8. Beneficial for voice.
9. Beneficial for memory.
10. Helps in epilepsy, myopathy, polio,
hemiplegia, paraplegia, arthritis, lumbo-
secral pain, ulcer, ulcerative colitis,
headache, gynec problems etc.

What to do after Basti ?
Post Basti Diet :
Special diet like Liquid diet or easily
digestible food is advised for double
days then basti course duration.

Nasya / Rakta-mokshan
NASYA :
For eyes, ear, nose & face problems
It helps to cure chronic cold, headache,
migraine, hair problems, speech
problems, mental tension, anxiety and
anger.

The nasal administration of herbal
preparation (medicinal tail, fresh juice or powder)
is called nasya. Aggravated doshas from the sinus,
throat, nose or head areas are eliminated through
the nose - the nearest exit. Nose is described a
gateway of brain- all the diseases of upper clavicle
region are very well treated by nasya.
Nasya can affect the brain and sensory and
motor functions (mental activities, memory,
concentration and intellectual activities). It is a
combination of Face massage, steam on face, ear
drops (karnapuran), nasal drops (Nasya) and
medicated gargling (Gandush / Kawalgrah).

What to do after Nasya ?
Gargle by little warm water
Mild svedan on forehead, face, neck & throat
Wash face and head
Dhoom pan
Complete rest
Patient is advised to drink warm water and eat
light diet.
Patient is asked to remain in a place, which is
not very cold and breezy.
RAKTA-MOKSHAN :
For skin diseases and other problems
A therapy which helps to treat skin
diseases-18 types, abscesses, gout,
headache, allergies, blood born diseases,
liver - spleen enlargement.

Rakta-mokshan means releasing
blood. Extracting a small amount of
blood from a vein helps to relieve
pittagenic or blood born diseases. In
chronic diseases which are not
responding to other treatments, Rakta-
mokshan is useful. At a time 100 ml.
Blood can be taken out and the
treatment can be repeated after 3
months.

always there is need to prevent the body from
