TEXT COMPARISON GUIDELINES

First identify the genre, theme, and then decide for which audience each
advert is intended, for what purpose. Is it subjective (biased/one side
view) or objective (unbiased/both sides considered). Comment on the
mood/message that is being suggested about its subject and how the
visual information is reinforced by the use of adjectives, metaphors,
similes or personification. How do the sounds of the words
contribute to the overall effect Are they noisy, harsh or
pleasant? All these could have positive as well as negative
effect- decide which for which text. Dont forget to write their
effects. It may be the use of hyperbole, connotation, paradox or
antithesis that may affect the reader in some negative or positive way
particular way related to what is being described in the written text. As
instructed in the question, you should use close reference (examples) and
brief quotations to support your opinion.
REMINDER: note that feature-spottingi.e. locating alone (There is a lot
of alliteration and similes in this passage) will gain no credit
Unless a comment is made as to the effect of what has been observed.
If you write, I preferred Passage One because it had a bigger picture
than Passage Two or Passage Three didnt contain any pictures or
Passage Two was boring which obviously are not
rewarded.
Decide how the pictures/ photos/other non-verbal information help to
strengthen the sense of mood created by the language. Again, selection
of specific, key points is essential here. You could, in a similar way to the
above exercise, list the elements you found
most distinctive or interesting about each passage, discussing such things
as the subject matter, the camera angle, the precise focus of the
shot/picture and any heading or caption which accompanies it. You could
then decide for which audience each Text is intended, the
mood/message that is being suggested about its subject and how the
visual information reinforced what is being described in the written text.
You could comment on the effect of the HEADING ,about the layout,
structure, and organisation/length of paragraphs.how do they contribute
to the overall effect
Selection of specific, key points is essential here which are most
distinctive or interesting or useful, or negative.
