The 4G Wireline Panel is a state of the art depth and line speed system with
digital display and integrated line stress or weight data. 2U panel (3.75 inch)
with ten inch remote mounted touchscreen monitor with very wide view-
ing angle or 3U (5.25 inch) rack mount control panel with monitor mounted
2U SLICKLINE PANEL on the front. All electronic tension and encoder measurement with internal
wheel, and line size compensation with default and user stored values for
multiple line sizes. Optimal radio button line size selection with both de-
fault and user defined line size and line stretch values stored in memory. Up
to 3 operator configurable alarms, set for operator selectable depth, ten-

1. Function Description
The functions of this measuring device are to

1a. Cable Spooling
The use of this measuring device helps to insure smooth and even spooling to help prolong
cable life and reduce the risk of possible damage where one wrap crosses another. Proper
alignment and proximity to rig will help insure proper spooling of cable and reduce unnecessary
wear on the measure head.
1b. Tension Measurement
A pressure transducer, mounted on the top of the measure head, is used to measure cable
tension. When the measure wheel deflects the cable, the amount of force is registered in the
logging unit and converted to line tension.
1c. Depth and Direction Measurement
A gear driven speedometer type drive turns an odometer, to measure distance and direction of
cable travel. This operation is continuous and displays any movement of the measure wheel.
2. Calibration
Depth measurements are made by using an adjustable grooved measure wheel. Groove
diameter of wheel is determined by cable size. This then gives a length per rotation measure-
ment. In the event the measurements are incorrect, the following procedure should be fol-
lowed to correct inaccurate measurements.
2a. Measure Wheel Adjustment
1. Loosen the allen head cap screws on each side of the measure rim.
2. Use rod on the inside lock ring to rotate lock ring.
3. To facilitate the movement of the lock ring, the measure rim should be wedged
open slightly. The lock ring is cut into on one side and will move more freely if worked
from the lagging end, rather than the leading end of the cut. Working from the leading
end tends to wrap the lock ring around the hub causing it to bind.
4. To correct measurements that are too deep, rotate the lock ring clockwise, with
respect to the hub and measure rim.

5. One complete revolution of the lock ring will correct six feet/per1000 feet of line.
(Metric wheels are six meters/per 1000 meters).
6. After all corrections are made, remove the rod from the lock ring and tighten all
allen head cap screws on each side of the measure rim.
3. Maintenance
Proper maintenance is required on the measure head to insure long life and accurate measure-
ments. We suggest that the assembly be cleaned, inspected for loose bolts and greased after
each use. Vibration can cause set screws on guide pulleys to loosen and cause severe dam-
age to side plates. There are ten grease fittings on assembly. They are located as follows:

Periodic cleaning and lubrication of odometer drive cable is required.
4. Transporting
It is of the utmost importance that the assembly is secured adequately for transportation. The
freedom of movement and the weight of the assembly could cause severe damage to the unit
and surrounding equipment if not properly secured.

Geo-Log 2 Ft. Measure Head

Our 2 foot measure head was designed as an improvement of a near surface

or shallow hole unit used for mineral logging and portable skid units for many
years. The new design followed a basic approach that had been used for years
with the Geo-Log 3 Foot Measure Head which was almost exclusively for wire-
line services.
The reduced scale for the 2 Ft. Measure Head using a non-adjustable measur-
ing wheel made it possible to build a very light, but very strong measure head
which is durable and cost effective.
The side plates are 6061 T6 anodized aluminum plate, and the measure wheel
is 4130 heat treated steel.
The unit is sold with odometer cable output for a 5 digit mechanical odometer
Lloyd Hawthorne and optional encoders, and custom combinations are supplied if required.

Introduction
The Geo-Log Three Foot Measure Head is a refinement (available in various models) of
the measure head designed by Marion Hawthorne in the late 1950s.

Each revolution of the Three Foot Measure Head measures three feet of cable. The
cable takes a 22-degree deflection path to provide a measurable force to the load cell
unit, which gives line stress or weight data to the operator.

It is the most popular type of measure head in North America, and is ideal for cased
hole logging and perforating. This is largely due to the fact that it is the most economi-
cal measure head available for cased hole work, not only in terms of initial cost but also
in maintenance.

3 MEASURE HEAD

Geo-Log offers three different options for weight indication on the three
foot head. The first being hydraulic only with no digital display.
The second option is a hydraulic gauge and pressure transducer to
measure weight indication with an electronic display. The third option is
an electronic load pin which completely replaces the need for hydraulics
and is displayed through the 4G Wireline Panel.

The 4G Wireline Panel is a state of the art solution for real time depth,
line speed, and weight. It was originally developed as a companion for
the Geo-Log MD 20-20 Measure Head, but is an excellent product to
interface with the Geo-Log Three Foot Measure Head. One advantage of
the 4G Wireline Panel mated with the Three Foot Measure Head is that
it makes wheel diameter maintenance less critical because the effective
size can be adjusted in the panel.

The Geo-Log Three Foot Measure Head is field adjustable or line wear.
Each line size needs properly sized rim (the outer ring of the measure
wheel).

In recent years there have been more frequent requests for a boom mounted,
dual encoder measure head with electronically adjustable depth, that could
be easily adjusted in the field for split drum wireline service units. THE MD
20-20 is Geo-Logs solution, and most current offering. It is available in 7/32
inch to 5/16 inch for cased hole, and 3/8 inch to 15/32 inch for open hole. It
may be ordered with a magnetic line mark detector. The Geo-Log MD 20-20 is
a great addition to our arsenal of proven under fire wireline technology. It is
the most rugged measure head in its class.
Compact in size and solidly constructed, it has that something that everyone
is looking for Accurate Depth. And it is priced (as are most of our products)
to beat the competition. With its easy to open design, it is perfect for most
applications including double drum trucks, split drum trucks and skids. You
can literally change line sizes in a couple of minutes without having to re-head
your wireline cable or disassemble the measuring system. The MD 20-20 in-

The chassis, which carries the pressure roller assembly and alignment roll-
ers, employs similar hooks, and critical dimensions to facilitate interchang-
ing parts between the new and old system. It is possible to put the new
Geo-Log lower frame assembly on a Gearhart chassis or use the new Geo-
Log chassis with the Gearhart lower frame assembly. Some parts and sub
assemblies will interchange on the Gearhart chassis only, although they are
not identical.

sure wheel surface; but due to wear and the need for more than a tangental contact,

Chassis assembly
The chassis is machined from solid 6061 T6 aluminum plate, and two are required per
assembly. The standard finish is black anodized. When the logging truck hanging/
guiding system is properly balanced, the measure head assembly is subject to very
little stress. However, the Geo-Log system is exceptionally strong, and stronger than
the older Gearhart system. A generous amount of extra material has been left at each
end of the chassis to customize roller spacing for exceptionally large cables i.e. 1/2
inch dia..
SF-12 Seal Master bearings provide the support for the measure wheel shaft. This
item is the only painted part of the Geo-Log system, and it can be easily replaced at
a bearing supply store or at Geo-Log, Inc. in Granbury, Texas.
The clamping assembly and pens are aluminum and stainless steel respectively.
All fasteners are stainless steel to control corrosion.
One encoder mount and one mechanical drive connection with cover are standard.

Pressure roller assembly Measure wheel

The pressure roller assembly is a subassembly of the chassis. The roller and its shaft The standard measure wheel is made of 17-4 SS condition 1075.
are made of 17-4 SS Condition 1075. The same seals (4 required) used in the older

The roller bearing (2 required) is the same as the Gearhart system and 2 snap rings
hold the bearings and seals in place at each end of the shaft. The bearing block may
not be interchangeable with the old system. However, all the seals and bearings of
this assembly have been made the same to help reduce inventory for users who have
both systems in the field.

The Geo-Log pressure roller assembly uses slightly heavier springs than the older
systems. This gives approximately 30 pounds more pressure on average size cable.

Guide rollers

Six guide rollers have been standardized at 1.5 inches in diameter. Standard material
used is 17-4 SS condition 1075. The guide rollers contain bronze bearings.

The Geo-Log chassis is drilled in steps so that different line sizes are accommodated
by moving the 4 vertical rollers to increase or decrease the distance between them for
different size cable. This feature makes it easier to standardize to one roller diameter.
The closer the vertical rollers are to the measure wheel the smaller the cable.
The 2 bottom horizontal rollers are straightline and tangent to the measure wheel
surface.

The Geo-Log Slickline Measure Head

Assembly Number: 900400-100

The Geo-Log Slickline Measure Head is a state of the art device for measur-
ing slickline wire in ranges of .092 through .187. The device opens or sepa-
rates by releasing 4 tabs to allow for quick loading of the slickline, therefore
making it possible to change the line in minutes. The three wheels are each
dedicated to the individual functions of mechanical depth, tension via elec-
tronic load pin, and electronic depth. The electronics are the same as our
MD 20-20 System, which allows for adjustable depth calibration and custom
alarms to support ultra safe and highly accurate operation. The materials
are similar to our other environmentally durable equipment. Dependable
