The Microscope

Humans have
magnified for
thousands of
years.
Magnification
wasn't great
enough to see
cells until 1673.
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek
Designed an early, powerful
microscope
Saw living organisms in a drop of water
Why was the microscope
improtant?
The microscope
allowed scientists
see things that
were too small for
the naked eye.
Robert Hooke made
this one:
What did they see?
The microscope allowed scientists to
see bacteria and yeast (unicellular
organisms), blood cells and tiny
animals moving in the water.
Magnification
Microscopes can help us see tiny
objects.
Scale
Scale is a comparison between sizes of
things
1 metre is 100 times the size of 1 cm
Google the following:
How many angstroms are in a
nanometre?
How many nanometres are in a
millimetre?
How many millimetres are in a
centimetre?
How small is small?

Lab Focusing on the
Microscopic World
You will conduct an investigation about
how to use the microscope and how
to observe living and non-living
things
This lab will be submitted for grading.
What is a cell?
A cell is a membrane surrounding
cytoplasm that contains genetic
material.
Animal Cell
Plant Cell
Unicellular Organisms
Some living things consist of only a
single cell
It still carries out all life functions
Instead of
organs
they have
organelles
Multicellular Organisms
You and I are made of trillions of cells.
We grow by making more cells over
time.
What is Cell Theory?
Definition:
Cell theory states that cells are the
basic unit of all living things. It also
describes properties of cells.
3 Parts of Cell Theory
1. All living things are made up of 1 or
more cells.

2. The cell is the basic (or smallest)

unit of living things.

3. Cells come from pre-existing cells.
