REDIRECTING EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE

Dr. Jennifer McCormick

State Superintendent of Public Instruction
115 W. Washington St.
South Tower, Suite 600
Indianapolis, IN 46204

Dear Dr. McCormick:

As our states Superintendent, I am writing to ask for your support for increased funding
for educational programs offered in urban areas of Indiana. Redirecting Education for
The Future is a program designed to assist children and their families with various
educational needs beyond the classroom. Such as, English as a New Language programs,
new parenting courses, and trainings programs for school administrators and staff. State
assistance is essential in expanding these services and helping reach out to the
community and the families. Last year alone, DOE reported that 88% of Indiana Public
Schools barely passed Indiana Statewide grading for all schools. As a result, students
attendance has dropped since 2014-2015 school year and the overall Four Year Cohort
Graduation rate has fallen by 66% since 2013-2014 school year. In addition, student to
teacher ratio has increased to 17:1 in some public schools.

Redirecting Education for the Future will collaborate with school administrators and
staff, community groups, and local churches to provide educational and learning
assistance to students and their families. We are committed to academic excellence ,
personal integrity, and the development of individual potential through a
challenging curriculum in a cooperative, safe, and enriched environment in which
each person is significant, respected, and appreciated. Our mission is to appeal to
what will grab people economic well-being of community as well as the
educational and moral reasons for action. Be open, honest & engaging with
information to families, churches, & community groups. Bring people into schools
in multiple ways such as mentoring, parent/family volunteers, & social events.
Assure participation of students most at risk as well as others. Policies & procedure
focused on keeping kids in school. Furthermore, technology has transformed schools
into focus Magnet schools such as STEM and Environmental Science among other
programs to engage students in countless methods of learn. This rapid transformation in
educational growth is happening so quickly that educators who merely rely on their
existing knowledge and skills may be inevitably left behind. More families are turning to
adult education to catch up with todays high-tech, high-speed world.

For our Indiana and this nation to thrive in the face of educational competition, we can no
longer continue to depend on just the basics when educating our students for the future.
We need to help everyone develop their capabilities and advance the types of work they
REDIRECTING EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE

can do to better prepare our students and families for the future. This is especially true for
the increasing 17.62% of student who never finished high school according to DOE. . If
Indiana teachers lack support and resources for modernized training to increase their
skills, our economy and students, suffer.

School Corporations are desperate to hire educators with much-needed thinking skills,
high levels of literacy, and a good understanding of innovating teaching styles in all
subjects. However, many of Indiana educators lack these skills. In 2015, the U.S.
Department of Education required every state to submit an equity plan to ensure that
poor and minority children are not taught at higher rates than other children by
inexperienced, unqualified, or out-of-field teachers. Research consistently shows that
teacher quality is the most powerful school-based factor in student learning. Yet students
of color and those from low-income families often have less access to effective teaching
and experienced educators, even though expectations for student learning and
performance have increased.

The bridge over this gap between skills and employment is training and education.
Training helps prepare potential educators to master the basic skills they need to learn
and grow within the educational field. Training does not replace the training a School
Corporations provides but instead helps the teachers master the skills needed as
preparation for more specialized training.

Training and education is more than just workshops and technology programs. Training
helps teach the skills to be better prepared for teaching incoming students in new state-of-
the-art method. It covers the key skills for advancing to the next level educating.
Advanced training covering modern learning styles, computer literacy, and family
literacy.

Of course educating and training administrators and teachers who turn the wheels of our
future takes more than just a creative effort. State funding for training and education
programs will help develop Americas greatest resource the students.
