MARDEC Berhad (formerly known as the Malaysian Rubber Development

Corporation or MRDC) was established on 20th September 1969 as a fully-owned
government company. MARDEC's main purpose then was to upgrade the quality of
smallholders' rubber to meet international requirements, and to provide them with an
assured and fair marketing outlet. Within a year, MARDEC was the proud owner of
three factories located in Meru (Selangor), Rantau (Negeri Sembilan) and Grisek
(Johor). These factories together produced no less than 10,000 MT of rubber
annually.

From its modest beginnings, MARDEC remained true to its commitment to

serve the processing needs of smallholders throughout Peninsular Malaysia, and by
1976 MARDEC owned a total of 16 factories nationwide. They produced an annual
total of 120,000 MT, more than 10% of national annual production, whilst serving
over 100,000 Malaysian smallholders.

1
This made MARDEC the largest producer and exporter of all premium and
volume grade Standard Malaysian Rubbers (SMR) in the country. The growth of
MARDEC was inevitably interrupted by market downturns in the early 1980s and
early 1990s due to global recessions. As such, MARDEC had to undergo a period of
consolidation and rationalization in order to realign its position in this rubber
industry.

In 1998, MARDEC's forward-thinking approach sent its operations offshore

to handle the processing and exporting of rubber & latex from neighbouring countries
such as Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, as well as India and China. Currently,
MARDEC Berhad has the capacity to handle 300,000 MT of TSR (technically-
specified rubber), latex and specialty rubbers at its processing factories. MARDEC
also takes pride in being the first producer and trader of smallholders' rubber in the
world to be awarded the prestigious ISO 9001 certification.

Today, MARDEC's core business remains in rubber processing, marketing

and trading whilst operating with a more diversified production base, producing a
myriad range of products with a greater competitive edge to better serve its customers
all over the world.

1.51 WEEKLY SUMMARY
Week Activity
24.7.2017 For my first week, I start with report duty to my supervisor
28.7.2017 in the first day in the morning. For first day, my company
organize Eid Feast so, all the staff and the workers had to join the
feast. My supervisor gives me a file that contain all the Standard
of Procedures and need me to read and revise that all. On the
second day, my supervisor brings me to the production line to
know all about the production. From that, I know some of the
machines that I never heard of before. In the evening, we have to
calculate the perimeter of shaft of external slab cutter to order a
new one as it is broken. Next, I have to know the layout of the
production line as I have to make a machinery plan layout and the
emergency plan layout. By doing this I can use my knowledge in
Excel to draw the layout. I also need to know all the safety sign
that should be at the production line. Next, the supervisor also
teaches me how to use a website called e-processing rubber.
My company organize gotong-royong on Friday and all the
staff and workers compulsory to join the activity.

4
31.7.2017 For my second week, my company is quite busy because
4.8.2017 there will be a potential customer come visit to our company. On
Monday and Tuesday, this company organized a training about
First Aid Kit and CPR for the employees. I finished my task that
was given to me last week which is to make a Daily Cleaning
Maintenance Log and printed it to show to my supervisor. I also
had been given a new task which is to make a list of calibration of
devices in which I had to go to the laboratory and production line
to get all the information. I also helped to organize the
information boards by stick some charts about the performance
and the production of this company. To fill my leisure time, I did
some of my reports and also helped my intern mate with their
works.
7.8.2017 This is the 3rd week that I perform internship at this company.
12.8.2107 Starting from this week and so on, Ive been given a task which is
to monitor the employees. So, every morning I have to go to the
production line and follow the employee measuring the thickness
of the blanket and the size of crumb. By doing this I got to learn
on how to measure the thickness of the blanket and also the size
of crumb by using a calliper. Then, I also have to edit my Daily
Cleaning Maintenance Log and translate it to Malay language as
it is to ease the employee to able to understand it. If I have free
time, I will help my intern mate and also the staff with their
works. On Thursday, the manager of this company wants to meet
us and brief a little bit about our company and also the scope of
our works. The manager gives me a new task which is to make a
CAD on any item in production line by using Solidworks. For
this week, I have to work on Saturday and on this day, I just
doing my reports.
14.8.2017 This is the 4th week that I perform internship at this company.
19.8.2017 As usual every morning, me and my friends went to the
production line to monitor the employee measure the thickness of
the blanket and also the crumb size. For this week, my supervisor
gives me a new task which to make a breakdown form. Before I
did this task, I study first the form from the internet to get some
ideas. After finish that task, I email it to my supervisor to check
the form. Other than that, I go to the laboratory to help my friends
with their work. For an example, I help my friends punch the
rubber to get the sample to calculate the PO, P3O and the PRI of
each sample. Next, I help the lab assistant to write down readings
into DRC logbook and I think working in lab is quite fun. I also
go to the production line for each hour starts from 8.00 a.m. until
3.00 p.m. to get the sample. On Thursday, I get a new a task
which is to make an Identification Form for each machine at the
production line and as usual I learnt at the internet. After I do
some correction I email it to my supervisor. As far as I know,
most of my task is done by using Excel and lucky for me I can
use Excel quite easily. For this week, it is my turn to work on
Saturday. On Saturday, I help the lab assistant to fill in the DRC
logbook.

5
21.8.2017 This is the 5th week that I perform internship at this company.
25.8.2017 As usual every morning, me and my friends went to the
production line to monitor the employee measure the thickness of
the blanket and also the crumb size. For this week, we got a new
task which is to help the employee at the shipment. At the
shipment, we need to wrap the pallet with hard plastic to cover it
from any harmful substances. Next, I also make a softcopy of PO,
PRI and others of bale and biscuit by using Excel so that this
company can use this to for their usage. I also help the lab
assistant with their job by calculating the DLC sample. At the last
day, we get a new task which is to complete the ISO of this
company.
28.8.2017 This is the 6th week that I perform internship at this company.
30.8.2017 For this week, I only work on Monday until Wednesday only. On
Monday, I go to the discharge point which is near to Sungai Perak
to help my friend take water sample. Then, I proceed doing ISO
by making a softcopy of Evaluation for Compliance Act Form.
Throughout this week, most of my work related to ISO and I also
help the lab assistants with their works.
5.9.2017 This is the 7th week that I perform internship at this company.
8.9.2017 For this week, I start working on Tuesday because on Monday it
is holiday. On Tuesday, there is lecturer from UiTM Shah Alam
come to evaluate one of my friends and because there is no
lecturer come to evaluate me so the lecturer volunteer to evaluate
me. Then, me and my friends did the ISO together and find the
evidences for the ISO. On my free time, I did my report and my
report almost 90% completed and by next week I can give to my
lecturer to be sign. I also help the lab assistant with the DLC
logbook.
11.9.2017 This is the 8th week and my last week that I perform
15.9.2017 internship at this company. For this week, I focus on doing this
report with my friends and give the supervisor evaluation form to
my supervisor to be evaluate. Then, I also present all my work
here to my manager. As this week is my last week here, I finally
finish all my tasks here and prepare to continue my study back.

6
2. INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT
As I being an intern student at Mardec Processing Sdn. Bhd. for 8 weeks, I
think that this company will make good satisfaction in terms of environment for all
the employees. Although this company produce rubber type product which will
produce smelly odour but I think in term of cleanliness, this company is clean as the
employees clean it daily. The fact that all the employees obey the 5S will make the
working environment much more better. So, by undergoes internship at this company
it will make me ready to work for the real working world.

2.1 ADAPTATION AND ADJUSTMENT TO THE INDUSTRY

During my first day at this company, I felt very scared and nervous because it
is the first time that I go to work in my life. What was I afraid of is what if I cant
make a friend here and also what if I make mistakes on my given tasks. So, on the
first day I greeted the guard first and the guard quite friendly which made my
nervousness low. After I went to the office, my supervisor, En. Hasrin bin
Kamaralzaman greeted me and introduced me to his assistant, En. Ishrauf bin Ilyas.
After that, I meet with my intern mate Nor Atikah and Muhd Farhan and from that
we become friends.

On the first day, my supervisor brought me to the production line and

introduced me the machines one by one. I thought I cant handle that job because it
quite complicated but after my supervisor gave me moral support and gave me help
if I needed one. The employees there also very friendly which is easy for me to build
a relationship between them. By making friends with some of the employees I can
ask them if there is something that I dont know. As an intern, I really dont feel like
an outsider here as they treated me like their friends.

Being an intern at this company, I can see that life at university is so much
differ compared life at industry. For an example, time management is really
important here because if you late only 5 minutes it will affect your customers. So,
by having punch card I can be more punctual. While working here I have to wear
appropriate attires due to professionalism while working. To become more adapt to
the company, I applied 5S concept because it is a systematic and methodical
approach following teams to organise their workplace in the safest and most efficient
manner.

7
2.2 PRACTICE OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH
ENVIRONMENT
During the practical, the supervisor did inform us all about the safety that I
need to know along my internship. For this course, Im going to focus on the safety
regulations at the production line. Actually, I had been given a task to know all the
safety signage that should be at the production line. From that, I may as well know
about all the safety that need to apply at the line.

I start at the beginning production line which is at the internal slab cutter. At
first, the cup lump is going into the soaking tank which contain water. At this area,
for sure there will be many water spills from the tank which make it slippery. There
is a sign that notifies the people around the area to be more careful. To avoid the
people from fall, they should wear a safety boot and walk carefully at the area.

Next, there are a lot of signs that said do not enter at each of the creeper
machine so that the people will not walk under the machine. A sign Do not walk on
the conveyer also is paste at the inspection conveyers to prevent the people from
walk on it.

At the feeder machine, the workers need to wear apron, safety boots and
gloves to conduct the filling process. This is because the workers may expose to the
hazards that may hurt them such as sharp objects at the cup lump and the reaction
between that cup lump and their hands. Next, at the weighing scale there is a sign
that notifies the workers to handle the saw with care as it is sharp and may hurt them.

There is also a sign that said Authorized Person Only at the switch that
control all the activity of the machine so that not any unauthorized person used it.
This actually will prevent the machine from easily break which can affect the
production. High Voltage signs are paste at every electrical box so that the person
will not touch it deliberately.

As for the overall safety, the workers need to wear earplug because at the
production line it is very noisy due to the sound of the machine. For a long term, the
workers may be become deaf and their hearings will be affected. The site is also a
non-smoking zone.

3. INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCES
Doing an internship actually giving me a lot of knowledges and experiences
about working in industry. In the early week, my supervisor brought me to the site
and explain to me what this company actually does. From that, I know that this
company is related to my field which is mechanical engineering as well as
manufacturing engineering. So, from this company I got experiences about the
maintenances and also the production but as I work here I think I prefer more to the
production as it suits me well.

Other than that, I also managed to get new friends here which will develop
my skills in communication. Perhaps while working here I pretty sure that I managed
to improved my soft skills that will give me more advantages when I be exposed to
the real working world. Working here also gave me opportunity to know how the
rubber bale was made and also my first time touching that rubber which I can explain
it to the others. At the figure below I will show the layout of the production line and
also how it works.

Production Line

At the production line, the company divides it into two different lines which
is the wet line and also the dry line. The wet line starts at soaking tank 1 and end at
the crumb feeder. This line is called wet line because it involved with the usage of
water which make it wet. The other line which is dry line starts with the dryer and
end at the packaging. This line doesnt involve with the usage of water because the
rubbers undergo the drying process and all the water has been removed from the
rubber.

For production line, the schedule is divides into two shifts which the first
shift starts at 7.00 a.m. 4.00 p.m. and the second shift starts at 12.00 p.m. 9.00
p.m. With having two shifts, the production rate of this company is higher compared
to one shift only. About each of the machines, there will be an employee that
conducts all the machine activity for an example if there is breakdown the employee
will tell it to the maintenance chief to repair it.

Purchasing
In purchasing, there are several procedures that related to purchasing such as
weighing section, bin section, sample taking and others. The first thing in purchasing
is at the weighing section. Supplier from outside will supplies rubber by using lorry.
The lorry will then be weigh by using a weighing machine and will be recorded into
a book and receipt. After that, the lorry will transfer the rubber into a bin and this
company actually has 6 bins that used to store the rubber. The function of this bin is
to store the rubber and to separate different kinds of rubber.

The rubber will then be cut a bit as a sample to know the condition of the
rubber. The rubber will be mill by using a specified machine and by using lime water
and will be mill again by using water several times and not using water for several
times. The rubber will then be weigh and cut into 3 pieces to be send at the lab.

Shipment

In shipment, the pallet will be stored here until been shipped. The pallets are
arranged organized so that it will be easy for the delivery. At the pallet, there is a
paper that mention the customers name and the location and from what I can see
mostly the shipment is to China. The pallet that been used is consists of two types
which is wood pallet and also steel pallet. The pallet will wrap by using a shrink
wrap and the employee there will burn the wrap so it will stick to the pallet.

4. INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS
1. Monitoring the Thickness of Blanket and Crumb Size
Every morning, my supervisor asks me to monitor the employees whether
they calculate the thickness of blanket and crumb size. So, I go meet En. Syed Azim,
who is one of the maintenance staff to learn on how to calculate the thickness of
blanket and crumb size. We had to calculate for each thickness of blanket from SC1
until SC9 to compare it with the standard size. For my first day, I got the data as
shown below:

No Standard size Right Middle Left

SC 1 26 25.36 25.60 25.14
SC 2 24 23.33 23.11 23.67
SC 3 22 21.84 21.82 21.35

SC 9 10 10.10 10.77 10.11

Diagram 4.1: Thickness of Blanket in each creeper

The range size of the blanket must be same or near to the standard size so the bale
produced will follow the criteria that the customers want. If the range is so far away,
the creeper will need to undergo maintenance to repair creeper.

calculate thickness the thickness of blanket

21
Next, the size of crumb also need to be monitor but we only take 2 readings of the
crumb size. For my first time try, the readings that I get are 3.56 mm and 2.63 mm
and this size is near to the standard size which is less than 5.00 mm. These readings
need to take daily.

2. Making Forms That Can Be Used for Machine/Maintenance

As I perform my internship here, I more been exposed to the management

part and I quite like it compared to the maintenance part. I need to create some forms
that related to the production line. So, there are some forms that I managed to do and
if the forms approved by the company they will be used.

The first form that I made is Daily Cleaning Maintenance Form. So, the
supervisor asked me to do some research on this form first. I used 2 mediums to do
the research example I used the internet to find the common cleaning maintenance
for machine that been used at the production line. Other than that, I went to the
production line to see the chief or in here we called him as mando to ask a few
questions. Based on the information I had gathered, I make a form by using
Microsoft Excel and after completed it I printed it and sent to my supervisor to be
check.

Next, I did the Breakdown Form and also the Identification Form for
Machines. So as usual I need to find information to make all these forms. But
luckily, my supervisor already gave me some ideas to make these forms so it is quite
easy for me to do these forms. All these forms are made to make the work of
maintenance much easier. As usual I made it by using Excel and after completed I
22
sent it to my supervisor to be check. Apart from these forms I also made a Machinery
Plant Layout and also the Emergency Plant Layout.

Diagram 4.5: I did the forms that my supervisor gave

3. Managers Task

During my first week here, we have a meeting with the manager of this
company, En. Shahir. The manager asks us about our course then he tells the suitable
task for us that related with our course. For me, the manager tells me to work at the
production line and focus on the maintenance. Then, he asks me what I learnt at the
University and I said that I had learnt Solidworks. Because Solidworks is just like
AutoCad, the manager asks me to make some components that I can see at the
production line.

So, me and my friends go to the production line to find some components that
I can make as my task. At the production line, I find 2 components that I can make
by using Solidworks as it is quite easy to make. The 2 components are helical gear
and also threaded bolt. When I have free times, I start doing this task and I also learnt
from the internet. By the time I finish this internship, I manage to complete this task
and I can present it to my manager.

4. ISO 14001 & ISO 9000

As we almost finish our internship here, my supervisor gives us a new task
which to make ISO and it quite difficult but the supervisor and also the staff helped
us. So, for our part we have to focus on the OFI (Opportunities for Improvement) and
also the EOTP (Environmental Objective Target & Programme). We also make a
Evaluation of Compliance Plan for internal audit.

For EOTP, first we have to make a softcopy of the form which consists of
objective, target and also the actual. We divide this into 6 components which is
reduce paper usage, reduce water consumption, reduce electric consumption,
effluent result, practice on schedule waste management, prevent serum mixed
monsoon drain. For all these components, we must know the target and also the
actual but we have to find the evidence to prove the actual result. For internal audit,
we must divide it into departments that this company has. For all the departments, we
must know the requirements needed and also the clause to support the environment.
Then, we must make a report on the ISO on target actual and also the improvement
needed.

24
4.1 RELATION BETWEEN THE TASKS TO THE MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING COURSE
By doing tasks here I can see that some of these tasks related to my course
that I learnt in UiTM Pulau Pinang. For an example, when my supervisor showed me
the production line and their processes I can relate that with my subject which is
Manufacturing Processes I (MEM461). In this subject, I learnt some
manufacturing processes which been applied at this company. An example, in that
subject I had been exposed with some of the machines such as shredder, slab cutter
and their function so, by working here it is easy for me to understand the basic
function of what the machines do. That subject also taught me what is cutting process
and I can see that the process is applied here.

Next, the next subject I can relate with my tasks is Manufacturing Processes
II (MEM561). What I remember the most in this subject is about the metrology. In
metrology, I learnt about dimensions and also the tolerances. Other than that, I also
learnt some of measuring devices that been used in industry. By knowing all these
information, it is easy for me to complete all the tasks given for examples, when my
supervisor asked me to do a list of measuring devices and their calibration, I can
easily recognised all the items involved.

After that, by doing Solidworks I can relate with two of my subjects which
are Engineering Drawing (MEC431) and also Computer Aided Design
(MEC435). These subjects teach me on how to do a 3D Design by using a software
named Solidworks. I learnt on how to make a part especially the one that has
threaded on it. I also learnt to use tools inside the software and if I didnt know
something I learnt it from internet.

Then, as I work at industrial place which is rubber factory, I managed to

apply some knowledge which I learnt in Industrial Management (MEM575). In
this subject, I learnt a little bit about ISO and this subject ask us to try doing ISO.
Other than that, I also learnt the 5S, Kaizen and also Kanban that already be applied
at this company. By applying all this method, this company management and
performance become much better.

4.2 INTEGRATING THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE WITH
PRACTICAL WORKS
As I perform my internship here, I apply some of theoretical knowledge that I
learnt at the university. First of all, when I visit the production line I see lack of
safety signage there, so by theoretically according to the OSHA there should be a lot
of safety signs. Because of that, me and my friends print some safety signs that
related to the production line and stick them to aware the hazards that might affect
themselves.

Other than that, I also apply some of the 5S knowledge while undergoes this
internship. The first S which is sweep/shine is been applied when I do all the work I
throw the things that not needed anymore for example the trash. Then for Sort, I
make a file that consists of different criteria for my internship. For Standardize, I
make a form which is Daily Cleaning Maintenance Form which must be follow by
the operator to make the production run smoothly.

For mathematical knowledges, I apply it while helping the lab assistant. For
the DLC sample, there is some mathematical equation that has to be followed so it is
quite easy for me because I have basic in mathematic.

Next, I apply all my software knowledges such as Microsoft Excel, Word and
PowerPoint and also Solidworks throughout this internship. All the forms that I made
here is by using Microsoft Excel and some of it just by using Microsoft Word. So, by
learning all this software it will be much easier for me to do all the tasks before the
dateline. The most important one is Solidworks because not all people can use this
software and I manage to do the task that my manager gave by using this software.

5. SUMMARY

In conclusion, there are many things that I learnt as I performed my training

for 8 weeks at Mardec Processing Sdn. Bhd. The training is quite challenging yet it is
quite fun because I met a lot of people here. This company gives me a lot of new
experiences about the industrial environment so that it can develop me into a person
that can work at the industrial. As I perform this internship, I think all the objectives
that this course provides had been achieved by me as I am now more confident to
work when I be expose to the real working life. Other than that, all the tasks that this
company give are related to my course maybe not all but some of it related to my
course. When my internship almost over, I feel very sad as the staff and my friends
here are really friendly that made me not afraid to go work.

Before I leave this company, there are some recommendations that I plan to
this company. I recommend that there should be an allowance for practical student
that perform internship here. Yes, I agreed that there will be no allowance but I hope
for the next students there will be allowance so that the students will feel valuable at
this company. Other than that, there should be a special room for practical students
as I been placed with the same room of my supervisor with my 2 others friends. The
room is quite small so, when we discuss each other we might interrupt our
supervisor. Lastly, I hope there will be earplug, safety boots and others provided for
the internship students as we always go to the production line frequently. In a
nutshell, I feel that this course is really good for degree students as it will prepare
them for the real working life.
