PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

RULES AND GUIDELINES

1.1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Through this public speaking competition, it is hoped that awareness is created
among the students of Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite Campus
(LPU-C) on the life and achievements of former Senator Sotero Laurel.

1.2 Public speaking is an essential part of most jobs and at some point, all of us will
have to give a speech in public to inform, to persuade, or to inspire others.

2.0 AIM

2.2 To raise appreciation among students with regard the contributions of Sotero H.
Laurel to the country.

2.2 To encourage the development of oral communication skills among LPU-C


students.

2.3 To promote the use of English language.

3.0 ELIGIBILITY

3.1 This competition is open to all undergraduate students of LPU- C only.

4.0 PRIZES

4.1 Trophy and certificate of achievement will be awarded to the champion.

4.2 Certificate of achievement will be awarded to the runners up.

4.3 Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participants.

5.0 COMPETITION RULES

5.1 Registration for interested participants is until September 16, 2017.

5.2 Contestants are to observe the following rules:

5.2.1 Contestants are given a topic 4 minutes before they are due to
present the speech.
5.2.2 All contestants shall speak on the same topic.

5.2.3 The speakers are given at least 3 and at most 7 minutes to deliver
their speech.

5.2.4 A warning bell will be sounded at the 3rd minute and a final bell at
the 6th minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter.

5.2.5 The speech must be an original work, prepared on the spot.

5.2.6 No outside sources or material may be brought into the


competition room. The speaker may write notes during
preparation time, but written notes cannot be used during the
speech.

5.2.7 Gratuitous vulgarity such as obscene, or profane language or


gestures is not allowed.

5.2.8 Speakers may not listen to other Impromptu speakers before


speaking themselves.

5.3 The topic for the Impromptu Speech will be prepared and provided by LPU
College of Law.

5.4 The competition will be divided into two levels.

5.4.1 The judges shall determine the number of contestants who will
proceed to the final round.

5.4.2 The finalists will again be given another topic three minutes before they
are due to present their final speech.

5.4.3 They will be given at least three minutes up to seven minutes only to
deliver their speech.

5.4.4 Only one champion and two runner ups will be declared as winners and
shall also receive awards and prizes.

6.0 ADJUDICATION

6.1 A panel of 3 judges will be appointed.

6.2 Points will be allocated according to the scoresheet.

6.3 Judges will collectively determine the placing by a clear majority vote.

6.4 The decision of the judges is final.


6.5 Individual marks will not be disclosed.
