Notes for First Time SLC Users

If you are a first time SLC user, we recommend that you review the SLC User Guide (Part of the Product's
User Guide) prior to SLC operation. Additionally, please ensure that you have the correct version of the
SLC loaded on the Local OpPanel and remotely before proceeding with any operations. Finally, please
read through the following release notes for up-to-the-minute best practices, known issues, and
descriptions of new features.

Priority Definitions
Priority 1 (P1) Extremely urgent, fix or patch immediately (Typically, the system or product is not
operational, resulting in a critical impact to the customers business and requiring immediate attention.)

Priority 2 (P2) Fix or patch definitely required for next external release (Typically, the system or product
is operational, but with severely restricted functionality or system degradation that is impacting the
customers business; some risk of customer occurrence or will cause minor disruption.)

Priority 3 (P3) Fix required for next external release (Typically, the system or product is operational with
functional limitations or restrictions that are not critical to the customers overall operation. These errors
are typically only seen in laboratory testing and are not likely to impact a customers operation.)

Priority 4 (P4) Fix desired for external release, if possible (Typically problems or questions associated
with product usage, implementation, performance, or any other inquiries that have little or no impact to a
customers operation considered firmware clean-up.)

Priority 5 (P5) Fix in the future or RFE (Typically minor problems or requests for enhancements.)

Previously Known Problems

1. (SL500 only) From SLC, cannot select a bridged drive on a library with a partition license if there
are not any partitions defined. Either remove the partition license or create partition(s) before
attempting to select a bridged drive.
2. (SL500 only) On a Bridged SL500, if the Partitioning activation file is removed before all defined
partitions are deleted, then a Bridging drive cannot be selected using SLC. All defined partitions
must b(e deleted before the Partitioning activation file is deleted.
3. (SL8500 only) Reports and monitors are not available if all of the following conditions are met:
a. Solaris OS
b. A custom installation directory is specified instead of using the default location.
c. SLConsole has not been previously installed to the client host.
d. The user launching the SLConsole application is the same as the user who installed the
application.
Workaround is to remove or rename the SLConsole link in the users home directory.
4. For older versions of the SLC, InstallAnywhere is not uninstalling links placed into the home
directory in Solaris, program groups in Windows, and many files on both Oss.
5. An audit occurs when the library is first initializing. On an SL3000 and an SL8500 a user can login
to the SL Console prior to an audit completing. However, not all features may be fully initialized or
available until the audit is complete. We recommend waiting until the audit is complete before
utilizing the SLC to undertake operations that require library configuration data such as partitioning
or diagnostics. For the SL500, users cannot login until the library is ready..

Compatibility and Tech Tips for Previous Releases

1. SL8500 Partitioning and CAP Unreserve require SL8500 FW FRS 3.72 or higher and SLC FRS
3.25 or higher.
2. SL500 Partitioning requires SL500 FW 1232 or higher and SLC FRS 3.44 or higher.
3. SL8500 Diagnostic move will not operate on SL8500 versions lower than SLC FRS 2.00.
4. SL500 Code Download will not operate on SL500 versions lower than SL500 FW 1022.
5. SL500 Reports and Monitors will not operate on SL500 version lower than SL500 FW 1022.
6. SL500 SLC may timeout during reboot of an SL500 library depending on number of drives
connected. This typically does not indicate a failure in reboot process.
7. SL500 User Management password modification will not operate on SL500 versions lower than
SL500 FW 1022. Password modifications for SL500 FW 1022 do not persist across reboot or
power cycles. It is recommended that this feature not be used with the fore mentioned code
version.
1. SL500 Diagnostic move, Recovery move, login password activation and change capability, and
remote reboot of drives and library require SL500 FW 1026 or higher code in conjunction with
FRS_2.40 SLC code in order to function properly.

Installation Paths:
After installation, the SLConsole will be placed in the following location on a Windows platform:

By default it will install to:

C:\Program Files\oracle\StorageTekLibraryConsole or the user may choose another installation
directory.
If the user installs or uninstalls the SLC while an existing SLC is running, the Windows computer
will require a reboot.

The installation will also put short cuts in:

Start -> All Programs -> Oracle -> StorageTekLibraryConsole

The Add or Remove Programs feature (in the Control Panel as built into Windows) will work with
this installer and allow for the clean removal of a version as needed.

After installation, the SLConsole will be placed in the following location on a Solaris-based platform:

By default it will install to:

~/oracle/StorageTekLibraryConsole

The installer will also create symbolic links if and wherever you tell it to, but they default to the
installing user's home directory. We do not recommend installing at the / level on Solaris. We do
recommend using /usr/bin or a user's home directory.
e.g., /home/someuser/SLConsole

SLC User Guide

A full reference SLC User Guide has now been developed and is included as part of the Product's Users
Guide. Document link is provided below. We highly recommend that you review this document prior to
using the SLC, particularly if you have not used the SLC previously.
