Plot
Hyakkaou Private Academy houses the
most wealthy and privileged students of
Japan, with many future leaders and
professionals graduating from the school.
In this school, the student hierarchy is
determined by a series of games in which
students bet their fortunes against one-
another, and those in debt become slaves
to the whims of those who hold their
money. One day, a new student appears,
one who gambles for the thrill of it, who
actively begins to disrupt the hierarchy of
the school while the student council tries
to nd ways to shut her down.

Characters
Main characters
Yumeko Jabami ( Jabami
Yumeko)
Voiced by: Saori Hayami[1]
The main protagonist of Kakegurui,
Yumeko is a new transfer student of
Hyakka Academy who shakes things
up by engaging in an increasingly risky
series of gambles that put herself and
her money on the line. Rather than
aiming for the victory, Yumeko gets a
thrill out of the mere act of gambling.
She quickly gure out ways that the
games are being manipulated in her
opponents' favor. She can more often
than not turn the tables on her foes. She
currently lives alone and her only
relative, her older sister, is now
hospitalized. Yumeko's current status is
the "pet". Although she could just pay
her debt remembering her family wealth,
she chooses not to. Simply because she
wants to invite everyone to a gamble
without being rejected.
Mary Saotome ( Saotome
Meari)
Voiced by: Minami Tanaka[1]
A student in Yumeko's class who began
as an antagonist, but after being
humbled in a jankenpon game, she later
becomes Yumeko's rival and ally, but
maintains a dislike for Yumeko's
character. Unlike Yumeko, Mary aims for
victory in every gamble. After learning
how the student council president sees
the "pets", Mary holds a grudge against
her and aims to become the next
president. In Kakegurui Twin, Mary acts
as the main character who starts out
trying to free her childhood friend from
debt but soon becomes enmeshed in
the school's culture of gambling.
Ryta Suzui ( Suzui Ryta)
Voiced by: Tatsuya Tokutake[1]
A student with good grades but is very
poor at gambling. In the beginning of the
series, he amassed a massive debt to
Mary due to his poor luck and serves as
her "pet," helping Mary manipulate a
game. However, after he is freed from
the debt, Ryta serves as an ally to
Yumeko. He often tries his best to keep
Yumeko out of any sticky situation
whenever possible, which normally
proves to be impossible. Though he
doesn't do much, he does at one point
serves as Yumeko's comfort where he
pulls her back to reality every time she
goes on an ecstatic compulsive gambler
mode. He is a kind-hearted person and
holds little ill-will to anyone including
Mary despite the abuse he suffered
under her. Despite his own lack-luster
personality, Yumeko seems to enjoy
keeping him around, trusting him with
her own life at times.

Momobami Kirari)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro[2]
The President of the Student Council
who got the position by defeating the

The nondescript masked vice president
of Student Council who is frequently
seen with Kirari. She is revealed to be
Kirari's identical twin sister.

through increasingly violent gambles

maimed or killed, especially after
challenging students to modied
versions of Russian Roulette. After
Yumeko forces her into a bloodless
draw, she becomes attracted to her as

deeply, for various reasons, one of which
is how Midari ruins the chance of risk,
whether it is hoarding it all for herself or
prematurely killing suspense.

Runa)
Voiced by: Mayu Udono[4]
A student council member who likes
video games and is always seen

1 July 1, 2017
"Jabami Yumeko to Iu Onna" ()

Yumeko Jabami, a second-year transfer student, arrives at Hyakkaou Academy and is shown
around the school by Class President Ryota Suzui, who has been classied as a bottom-ranked
"Pochi" as a result of a large gambling dept. Ryota warns Yumeko that the wealthier students
are likely to drag her into gambling to take her money. Later that day, Mary Saotome challenges
Yumeko to a modied Jankenpon, where the class will drop cards with "rock" "paper" or
"scissors" drawn on them, and the two players must win using only the rst three cards they
draw. After Yumeko appears to be beaten, she offers a nal bet worth 10 million yen in cash,
and crushes Mary after revealing she gured out that she was manipulating the majority of their
classmates' votes. In the hallway, Ryota apologizes to Yumeko for his role in helping Mary
cheat, and Yumeko offers him some of the winnings for adding to the thrill of the game.

"A Boring Woman"

2 July 8, 2017
"Tsumannai Onna" ()

Follow her loss, Mary ends up being classed as a "Mike", the female equivalent of the "Pochi"
role Ryota had before clearing his debt thanks to the money Yumeko gave him. Meanwhile,
Yumeko is challenged to a game of Concentration by Itsuki Sumeragi, the daughter of a toy
company CEO. Itsuki uses two decks of cards made by her father's company and wins 20
million yen from Yumeko in a close match. Yumeko demands a rematch to get it back and
Itsuki accepts under the condition that if Yumeko loses Itsuki can remove her ngernails and
toenails to add to her already extensive nail collection. Itsuki deals from the same two decks
again, condent that her cheating style of using heat-activated patterns in the cards will help
her win. However, Yumeko picks up on her scheme and wins on the very rst turn, remarking
that Itsuki would have won if she used cards with different markings. Afterwards, Kirari and her
student council members gather with the objective of eliminating Yumeko. Yumeko nds
herself invited to the club room of the Traditional Culture Research Society, just as Mary loses a
high-stakes bet, increasing the debt she already has by 40 million yen.

"Slit-Eyed Woman"
3 July 15, 2017
"Itome no Onna" ()

Yuriko Nishinotin, a member of the student council and president of the Culture Club,
challenges Yumeko to the "Life or Death" game she just defeated Mary at. In this game, players
bet on numbers on where swords in a cup will land, potentially winning or losing 30 times the
amount they bet depending on whether the swords land blade down or handle down. After the
rst game ends in a draw, Yumeko goes all in, deducing that Yuriko has been cheating by
having the dealer wear magnets on her hand to affect the movement of the swords. Just as
Yuriko becomes panicked over the thought of potentially losing over 2 billion yen, some of the
student council members, including student council president Kirari Momobami arrive to
observe the game. It is then that it is revealed that Yuriko had won the game, which Yumeko
suspects may have been the result of an elaborate cheating method the student council used
specically for their game. Ending up 310 million yen in debt as a result of her loss, Yumeko
ends up being classed as a "Mike" too.

"The Woman Who Became Livestock"

4 July 22, 2017
"Kachiku ni Natta Onna" ()

In lieu of payment requests, both Yumeko and Mary receive "Life Schedules" from the student
council, which rigorously dictate their entire futures including which career they will have, who
they will eventually marry and even how many children they will have if they do not clear their
debts. Later, an arrogant male student named Jun Kiwatari attempts to force himself onto
Yumeko, but is turned away after beautician Midari Ikishima tries to rope him into a game of
Russian roulette. Later, the student council announces a Debt Exchange Game, in which groups
of four students play a game of two-card Indian poker to try and exchange their debts, with the
winner losing their debt completely. Yumeko and Mary end up in the same group together along
with Jun, who has no debt but claims to have a relatively small 10 million debt so he can use
the game to make a prot, and another Mike named Nanami Tsubomi. As the game proceeds,
Jun appears to deduce that Yumeko and Mary are working with each other, only to wind up
landing into a bluff play by Mary.

"The Woman Who Became Human"

5 July 29, 2017
"Ningen ni Natta Onna" ()

Jun is put under further pressure as Yumeko and Mary deduce he is forcing Nanami to cheat
for him. With the game now becoming a battle of bluffs, Jun becomes desperate as he stands
to obtain a large debt if he doesn't end up in rst. Jun manages to move up to rst but becomes
panicked again when it looks like Nanami will overtake him and tries to coerce her into folding.
After some provocation by Yumeko, however, Nanami rebels against Jun's orders. At the end of
the match, Mary ends up in rst place while Jun ends up in last, as it is revealed that they had
switched around the chip values so that Yumeko's were of the least value. As a result, Jun ends
up with Yumeko's 310 million debt, Yumeko obtains Jun's fake 10 million debt and Mary's debt
is cleared, while Nanami is left with the same debt she started with, but with a new sense of
freedom and self esteem.

6 "Tempting Woman" August 12, 2017[a]

"Sasou Onna" ()

Yumeko has still not paid her debt. The student council conclude Yumeko wants to challenge
the student council president, Kirari. Mary is invited by Kirari to join the student council with the
implication she is not allowed to refuse. Midari challenges Yumeko to a game to guess which
cards are played by the dealer, and the winner gets to point one of two revolvers at the loser
and pull the trigger with neither of them knowing which of the guns' 6 chambers contain a
bullet. Yumeko agrees but insists the game only last 3 rounds, Ryota must be the dealer, and
the loser must pay 1 Billion yen. Midari also insists that if the winner misses their shot on
purpose, the loser can re a shot in return. Midari fully loads hers with 6 bullets. Ryota tries to
signal Yumeko which cards he has played but Midari ends up scoring higher and picks a
revolver at random. Yumeko warns her pulling the trigger is a bad idea but Midari points the gun
at Yumeko and pulls the trigger anyway.

"Refusing Women"
7 August 19, 2017
"Kyozetsu-suru Onna-tachi" ()

Seconds before Midari res Yumeko reveals she sabotaged her gun, then immediately admits
she is lying and the gun is unloaded. When questioned about her reasons Midari reveals she
blinded her left eye as payment for losing against the president and now only gambles when
the risk is pain or death. In the second round Yumeko correctly matches every card. She
chooses a revolver and res, having chosen the revolver that weighed less due to being
unloaded. For the third round both Yumeko and Midari choose to load 2 bullets. Yumeko
reveals Midari has been cheating by mirroring the cameras (Ryota is right handed but was
somehow dealing with his left). Midari had been intending to lose so she could experience
ultimate pleasure. Yumeko nds playing with no risk boring and despises Midari for it. She
reveals that neither she nor Midari matched a single card and the game is declared a draw.
Midari, realising she has been totally defeated, begs Yumeko to shoot her just once, but
Yumeko refuses. Mary refuses to join the council and swears revenge on the president. Yumeko
challenges Ryota to heads or tails and buys him sweets when she loses.

"Love-Dancing Woman"
8 August 26, 2017
"Ai Odoru Onna" ()

The president departs from the academy, leaving the rest of the council unsure how to deal with
Yumeko. Council member Yumemi Yumemite, head of PR and a YouTube idol, announces she
will be the next to challenge Yumeko. Itsuki Sumeragi, who, after losing to Yumeko, is in danger
of being disowned by her father, offers to become loyal to Yumeko if Yumeko defeats the
president, becomes the new president, and gives Sumeragi her place back on the council.
Yumemi bets Yumeko 50 million on the outcome of an on stage idol championship competition
and if Yumeko loses, Yumemi will alter her Life Schedule so Yumeko is forced to form an idol
duo with her, thus losing any hopes she has of a social life or meaningful relationships, just like
Yumemi. Yumeko tricks Yumemi into admitting she thinks her fans are all disgusting pigs on a
recording device and adds the device to the bet. If Yumemi loses Yumeko will release the tape
and Yumemis status as an idol will disappear along with her hopes for a career in Hollywood.
After Yumemis next concert is over Yumeko joins her on stage and the competition begins.

"The Dreaming Woman"

9 September 2, 2017
"Yumemiru Onna" ()

Yumeko and Yumemi play games designed to test idol skills, such as dancing and singing.
Yumemi allows Yumeko to win several games so there appears to be a risk she will lose. For
the 6th game they have to guess the birth month of members of the audience. Yumemi, having
memorised the birthdays of her entire fan club, believes she can easily win, but the audience
member chosen is Mary. Yumemi panics as she realises Yumeko is able to manipulate dice and
had rolled the dice to pick Mary specically and easily wins the entire game. Yumemi allows
Yumeko to play the recording of her insulting her fans. Yumemis fans announce they love her
anyway and she can continue being an idol. Yumeko reveals somebody had attempted to
sabotage Yumemi so she would lose her career. Yumemi publicly accuses council member
Kaede Manyuda. Kaede denies any wrongdoing and announces he intends to be the next
president. Yumeko suggests they gamble to decide who is lying but Kaede refuses to gamble
with a Mike. Yumeko suddenly uses her status as a Mike to challenge Kaede to a Public Match,
which, as a council member, he is not allowed to refuse.

"Selective Woman"
10 September 9, 2017
"Sentaku suru Onna" ()

Kirari attends a meeting of the heads of her extended family. Kaede becomes convinced
Yumeko is simply a gambling addict. The masked vice president Ririka insists on dealing the
cards. The game is modied Poker where the last player to bet a chip can decide whether a
stronger or weaker hand wins, no player is allowed to fold, meaning each round will have a
winner. Yumeko bets her 310 million to buy 31 poker chips. Kaede bets 1 Billion and gets 100
chips. Yumeko wins the rst round causing Kaede to factor in her love of risk taking. When
Yumeko discards a strong hand Kaede responds by revealing his cards before any bets are
made, meaning Yumeko could win if she gets to choose strong or weak. Yumeko bets all her
chips, Kaede bets a single chip, chooses strong and Yumeko loses the match. Yumeko is given
the option to continue playing and calls out to Sumeragi for money. Kaede insults Sumeragi but
offers her council seat back. Yumeko defends Sumeragi as her friend and urges her to take a
risk for the sake of her ambitions. Rather than accept her seat back from Kaede she buys
Yumeko 100 chips to continue playing.

"The Woman Who Bets Her Life"

11 September 16, 2017
"Jinsei o kakeru Onna" ()

Kirari announces she will no longer support the other family heads. Yumeko and Kaede keep
betting until Yumeko runs out of chips again, however, Sumeragi continues to buy her more
chips until Kaede bets 100 chips to force her to stop from lack of money. Yumeko suggests
Sumeragi bet her life, i.e. to receive a life schedule. Sumeragi refuses at rst but after seeing
Yumekos cards she rips out her own ngernails and willingly bets her life. Based on Sumeragis
family wealth Ririka declares Sumeragis life schedule to be worth 10 Billion. Kaede challenges
the decision so Ririka removes her mask, revealing she is actually Kirari in disguise. With
Yumekos bet now totalling 12 Billion Kaede desperately bets his own Life Schedule for 10
Billion and chooses strong. Yumeko reveals Sumeragis desperation was a plot to deceive
Kaede into choosing strong and reveals she has three jacks, beating Kaedes three eights.
Kaede ends up billions in debt and loses his council seat. Yumeko and Kirari sit down to
discuss their reasons for gambling, with both of them appearing to have some sort of attraction
to each other. They declare they are nally ready to gamble.

"Gambling Woman"
12 September 23, 2017
"Kakegurui no Onna" ()

Council member Runa Yomozuki acts as judge of their match. It is decided the loser of the
match will be expelled. The game is Tarot, using 22 cards valued from 1 - 21 of which 3 will be
chosen by Yumeko, Kirari and Ryota. If a card is facing Yumeko she gains those points, but if it
faces away from her she loses the points. If they pick the Fool card valued at Zero Yumeko
wins instantly, but only if the Fool is facing her. If it is facing away she loses instantly. If the
round ends and Yumeko has any points she wins, if she has less than zero points she loses.
Yumeko picks a card and gains 1 point. Kirari picks a 21 point card facing away from Yumeko,
meaning Yumeko ends with minus 20 and that Ryota has to locate the Fool card and hope it is
facing Yumeko. Sumeragi seemingly locates the Fool but is stopped from revealing it by Runa,
who declares telling Ryota would be cheating. Yumeko urges Ryota not to worry as the risk of
expulsion only applies to her. Ryota declares he has always wanted to be with Yumeko and will
also accept the risk of expulsion. It is revealed that one of the cards has a lipstick smudge
which Sumeragi and Mary believe Kirari left by mistake. Ryota almost picks the card but
changes his mind at the last second as he knows Kirari would not make that sort of mistake.
Finally understanding the rush of gambling purely by chance Ryota chooses totally at random.
His card is worth 20 points, and the game ends with Yumeko having zero points. As this is not a
plus or a minus Runa declares the match a draw with no one having to be expelled. Kirari and
Yumeko agree to gamble again in the future. Kirari congratulates Yumeko on having such loyal
servants, but Yumeko replies that they are her friends. Runa calls Ririka, revealed to be the
Presidents twin sister, to inform her of the result of the match. In a closing dialogue Ryota sums
up how Yumeko has affected everybody she gambled with. Kirari decides to dissolve the
student council and Yumeko continues to be a Compulsive Gambler.
