0:58

1:02 good evening and it is great to be with you on this Labor Day and it is an honor to
begin this journey with you and

1:09 we begin tonight with that

1:11 developing story word of a crash at sea and a stunning rescue a Marine Corps
helicopter 25 sailors and Marines going down in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Africa all of
them survived in ABC's chief global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz leading us off tonight

1:24 Martha good evening good evening David

1:26 it's amazing that everyone got out alive and a crash like this involving one of these
big top-heavy helicopters that have a tendency to flip over and sink fast if I hit the water it was a
Super Stallion helicopter just like this one

1:45 seen here approaching the same ship the

1:48 USS Mesa Verde last month you can see

1:51 the landing spot on the deck clearly

1:53 marked but landing these big helicopters

1:56 in the wind and the waves on moving

1:59 ships is challenging today's accident

2:02 happen unapproachable

2:05 hit the ship just before it was about to

2:09 land and then crashed into the sea this

2:12 was a shock

2:13 bang-bang in the water the ship

2:15 immediately launched a small boat to

2:17 help rescue the 25 onboard all trained

2:21 for exactly this kind of accident

they

2:23 learn to overcome that initial fear and

2:26 understand that self-control is what's

2:28 going to be the key to survival

only one

2:31 of those aboard sustained significant

2:33 injury but not bad enough to require

2:35 evacuation from the ship these super

2:38 stallions are one of many types of

2:40 helicopters at sea

2:42 as we saw during a trip to the Gulf of

2:44 Oman vital to missions around the world

2:47 especially the volatile Mideast and

2:50 Martha's back with us live from

2:52 Washington Martha any early word on a

2:54 cause here well they're not sure what

2:56 caused the crash whether it was

2:58 mechanical or a crew air it certainly

3:00 wasn't hostile action but tonight

3:01 everyone is just happy that everyone is

3:04 safe David including us Martha Raddatz

3:06 starting us off tonight Martha thank you

3:08 we're gonna turn now to the other

3:09 developing headline tonight millions of

3:11 Americans driving home after the holiday

3:13 weekend back to work back to school but

3:15 first driving through some horrific

3:17 weather take a look at this tonight golf

3:18 ball-sized hail pounding cars in Kansas

3:20 leaving a lot of damage it's wait and

3:23 there was this a shelf cloud signaling

3:25 storms moving in over parts of Iowa 80

3:27 mile-per-hour winds right behind it and

3:29 just take a look at the weather wall

3:30 tonight every dot up there on that map a

3:33 burst of severe weather reported on this

3:35 Labor Day weekend more than 180 reports

3:37 of severe weather and tonight there is

3:39 more on the way

3:40 reported tornadoes touching down today

3:42 in this evening millions in the storm

3:43 zone before it's done ABC meteorologist

3:45 ginger Zee tracking it all as millions

3:50 attempt to enjoy summers last-gasp

3:54 Mother Nature flavoring on Labor Day

3:57 parts of Michigan erupting with severe

4:00 storms an inch of rain fast filling the

4:03 streets outside Grand Rapids in

4:05 Worcester Massachusetts Sunday head

4:07 crashed rasa those hail some

4:10 boom-boom-boom-boom a hip crack crack

4:12 crack crack

4:14 and it's destroyed too my god an ef-0

4:17 tornado winds up to 85 miles per hour

4:19 ripping a path just under two miles long

4:21 it's incredible you don't expect to have

4:24 tornadoes in western I mean we don't

4:26 live in Kansas it's actually the sixth

4:29 tornado reported in Massachusetts this

4:31 year but she's right it's not Kansas

4:33 this was the hail raining down growing

4:37 to golf ball-sized those sinister shelf

4:40 clouds creeping across the plains inside

4:43 gusts up to 80 miles per hour at least

4:46 five people from Kansas to New York City

4:48 struck by lightning just stunning

4:51 pictures this Labor Day weekend ginger

4:53 what are you watching tonight a severe

4:54 thunderstorm watch already in place for

4:55 parts of Oklahoma and Kansas let me take

4:57 you straight to the map David right

4:59 through Missouri into southern Illinois

5:00 that's the threat area tonight but that

5:03 same cold front that produced reported

5:05 tornadoes in Michigan will sink to the

5:07 south and east in western New York down

5:08 to central Kentucky we're watching

5:10 tomorrow for those damaging winds flash

5:12 floods and large hail you're thinking

5:14 late afternoon and evening when

5:15 everyone's getting back from their

5:16 commute and then finally tropical

5:18 depression 5 has come together and looks

5:22 like it will become dolly in the next 24

5:24 hours tropical storm dolly of course

5:27 going right into about 200 miles south

5:29 of Brownsville right there in Mexico if

5:31 this becomes Dolly it is now the D in

5:34 the alphabet of the tropical storm

5:36 season the hurricane season and the last

5:38 time we waited this long for D was 1994

5:40 so 20 years ago long wait but that's ok

5:42 with us alright ginger thank you we're

5:44 gonna turn around the world tonight into

5:46 a new crackdown this evening aimed at

5:47 stopping budding terrorists in their

5:49 tracks the proposal in Britain tonight

5:51 comes two weeks now after that gruesome

5:53 image that killer who executed American

5:55 journalist James Foley the mysterious

5:57 hooded man with what sounded like a

5:59 British accent

6:00 tonight British authorities taking the

6:01 lead after upping the threat level

6:03 they're heading into the weekend tonight

6:05 saying it is time to seize the passports

6:07 of suspected terrorists to prevent them

6:09 from leaving the UK to fight in Syria

6:10 and in Iraq and to prevent them from

6:12 joining Isis meantime back in this

6:15 country tonight and to an eye opening

6:16 ABC News investigation here with all of

6:19 that concern in Britain over homegrown

6:20 terror there is news tonight 6,000

6:23 foreign nationals have traveled here to

6:25 America and have now disappeared how

6:27 they do it and were any of them sneaking

6:29 into this country ABC's chief

6:31 investigative correspondent Brian Ross

6:33 tonight for a down payment of just a few

6:38 hundred dollars there's a much easier

6:40 way than this for people to sneak into

6:42 the country here's how get a u.s.

6:46 student visa to go to school and then

6:49 disappear as of today US authorities are

6:53 investigating the whereabouts of more

6:54 than 6,000 foreign nationals who arrived

6:57 in the u.s. on student visas and have

7:00 vanished their intentions unknown they

7:02 just disappeared that's just what

7:06 happened with the 9/11 hijacker who food

7:08 the passenger jet into the Pentagon and

7:11 authorities say the problem continues

7:12 it's been pointed out over and over and

7:15 over again and the fact that nobody's

7:17 done anything about it yet that's a very

7:18 dangerous thing for all of us

7:20 it's a well-intentioned program it

7:22 allows more than a million foreign

7:24 students a year to study in the US but

7:27 an ABC News investigation found homeland

7:29 security also certifies 86 beauty

7:33 schools 36 massage schools and nine

7:36 schools that teach horse shoeing all

7:38 valid for a US visa why a horse shoeing

7:42 school what's the value in that for the

7:44 u.s. I'm not too sure what the value of

7:46 that for the US would be Brian

7:48 Peter edged heads investigations for ice

7:50 Immigration and Customs Enforcement I do

7:53 agree with the problem Brian but they've

7:55 blended into the landscapes in where

7:57 they have blended into the landscape

7:58 it's like disappearing isn't it well

8:00 virtually ice agents have brought

8:02 criminal charges in some cases including

8:05 against five top administrators at

8:07 what's called the micro power Career

8:09 Institute in New York where authorities

8:10 say they essentially offered an easy

8:13 path to US visas for the price of

8:15 tuition so please leave the premises

8:17 none of the administrators would come

8:19 out when we showed up and they've all

8:21 pleaded not guilty to visa fraud charges

8:23 but incredibly despite the indictment

8:26 the operation remains on the Homeland

8:28 Security list of schools certified for

8:31 foreign student visas here it is right

8:33 here

8:34 right how can they still be on the list

8:36 of certified schools Brian I can only

8:38 say that this is the United States of

8:40 America and everyone has due process in

8:43 the wake of the 9/11 attacks there were

8:45 also calls for tighter rules and FAA

8:47 approval for u.s. flight schools that

8:49 trained foreign students but in the most

8:51 recent audit more than a third of the

8:53 flight schools accepting foreign

8:54 students still had not been certified by

8:57 the FAA David all right a lot of

8:58 questions unanswered Brian thank you

9:00 tonight from the Syrian border with

9:02 Lebanon where we know Isis has taken a

9:04 stand a new and stunning number more

9:06 than half the population in Lebanon are

9:08 now refugees from Syria in fact more

9:11 than 3 million Syrians have now fled

9:13 many of them children and look at this

9:14 tonight our cameras were right there on

9:16 the Syrian border where I learned

9:18 children don't board school buses they

9:20 board pickup trucks taken to work in the

9:22 fields supporting their families at 8 9

9:24 10 years old they come from middle-class

9:26 families their parents wants teachers

9:28 lawyers and now they are the ones

9:30 supporting their parents tomorrow night

9:32 right here we're on those trucks for

9:34 those grueling days in the field is

9:35 anyone looking out for the children

9:37 that's tomorrow night right here on

9:39 World News Tonight meanwhile to another

9:41 hot spot this evening President Obama

9:42 preparing to head to Europe for a

9:44 crucial meeting of world leaders this

9:45 week what to do about Russia and Ukraine

9:48 and tonight we've learned NATO is now

9:49 planning to launch a rapid response team

9:51 that can deploy a strike force several

9:53 thousand troops in as little as 48 hours

9:56 and to Iceland tonight into some

9:58 remarkable images coming in an ancient

10:00 volcano roaring back to life spewing

10:02 lava 200 feet into the air just look at

10:04 it a monster cloud so big aviation

10:06 experts had raised the alert level to

10:08 its highest level banning all flights

10:10 below 6,000 feet tonight that Code Red

10:13 has now been lifted back here at home

10:15 tonight and the hunt is on for the man

10:17 in this surveillance tape considered

10:19 armed and dangerous nicknamed the ak-47

10:21 bandit and you can see why wielding a

10:23 powerful assault rifle that's not all

10:26 authorities pointing to one thing

10:27 tonight the word written across his vest

10:30 sheriff the suspect reportedly claiming

10:32 to be a former law enforcement officer

10:34 but will he be caught before he strikes

10:36 again

10:37 ABC's cecilia Vega tonight with the tape

10:42 tonight across the West the all-out

10:44 manhunt intensifying for this masked man

10:47 wanted for five bank robberies in four

10:50 states most recently making off with a

10:52 duffel bag full of cash in Nebraska each

10:56 time wielding an assault weapon often

10:58 wearing a bulletproof vest

11:00 we're gonna track this guy down wherever

11:02 he goes authorities say his spree began

11:04 two years ago here in Chino California

11:06 the bandit robbing a bank shooting and

11:09 seriously wounding a police officer he

11:12 fires like four shots at the car boom

11:14 boom boom boom

11:15 the FBI suspects he also called in a

11:18 bomb threat as a diversion

11:19 I will whatever hey what do you report

11:23 the ak-47 bandit has shown such

11:26 proficiency with a gun including right

11:28 here at this Bank the FBI tells me it's

11:30 now looking into the possibility that

11:32 he's a former police officer or

11:34 ex-military in fact during one Idaho

11:37 heist police say he bragged about being

11:39 a former officer and look at these

11:41 surveillance pictures he's seen wearing

11:43 a sheriff's vest if you're willing to

11:46 shoot a police officer you're probably

11:49 willing to do just about anything

11:50 the FBI hoping to catch this bandit last

11:53 seen carrying that ak-47 cecilia Vega

11:56 ABC News Chino California cecilia Vega

12:00 tonight Cecilia thank you we're gonna

12:02 turn down to that blockbuster Medical

12:04 headline involving the number one killer

12:05 in the world heart disease tonight we're

12:08 learning more here about an experimental

12:09 treatment now being called a potential

12:11 breakthrough so promising they stopped

12:13 the study in the middle of it all and

12:15 now the next step FDA approval let's get

12:17 right to ABC senior medical contributor

12:18 dr. Jen Ashton and Jen you were telling

12:20 us in the newsroom this is a big deal

12:22 absolutely this is the first drug of its

12:24 kind in pill form to treat congestive

12:26 heart failure it's a combination of two

12:28 drugs and in this study which was the

12:30 largest ever done for heart failure it

12:32 was found to reduce deaths from heart

12:34 disease by 20% and improved quality of

12:36 life by 20% oh that's a staggering

12:38 figure in the meantime how long will it

12:40 take to get approval to get it out there

12:42 well first it needs to be studied more

12:43 in african-american patients and in

12:45 women but if the FDA approves this it

12:47 could be available as early as 2015

12:50 highly significant and

12:53 optimistic all right dr. Ashton with us

12:54 here tonight doctor thank you and

12:56 tonight as America heads back to work

12:58 after Labor Day we're not heading back

13:00 to a paycheck like this one

13:02 one of the biggest endorsement deals in

13:03 sports history NBA star Kevin Durant our

13:05 partners at ESPN now reporting that Nike

13:08 is offering Durant 300 million dollars

13:10 over the next ten years to stay on the

13:13 deal negotiated by superstar Jay Z's

13:14 company Roc Nation sports just as Durant

13:17 was considering leaving Nike for another

13:19 sportswear company Durant tweeting today

13:21 excited and humbled to sign back with

13:23 the swoosh there is still much more head

13:25 on world news tonight this Labor Day

13:27 that big headline today the famous faces

13:29 who say their private photos were stolen

13:32 so tonight here we ask how safe are your

13:34 photos on your computer answer is eye

13:37 opening the vacation hero the man on his

13:40 balcony who spotted not only the

13:41 swimmers but the hammerhead shark what

13:44 he did next he's right here tonight and

13:47 you've gotta stay tuned for this

13:48 America's future tonight kindergartners

13:50 from all over this country getting ready

13:52 and what's the one thing they're most

13:54 excited about made us laugh well perhaps

14:01 you read that headline today some famous

14:03 faces saying their photographs were

14:04 stolen hat tonight the FBI is on the

14:07 case as we ask here how safe is the

14:09 private information the photos you've

14:11 stored through your own computer and is

14:13 your Wi-Fi making it easier for hackers

14:15 to get your information ABC's Linsey

14:18 Davis back on the case tonight an

14:22 invasion of privacy tonight impacting

14:24 some of the biggest stars in the world

14:26 personal photos of some a-list

14:28 celebrities were reportedly posted on

14:30 photo sharing site 4chan allegedly

14:32 obtained by hacking cloud accounts those

14:35 huge servers that can automatically

14:37 backup every picture you take on your

14:39 phone even if you have deleted photos

14:41 from your phone oftentimes they've

14:44 already been uploaded into the cloud

14:46 they continue to exist Apple said today

14:49 they're investigating if their iCloud

14:50 service was breached but researchers say

14:53 many of us are making it all too easy

14:55 for criminals to access our most private

14:57 information

14:58 we're cruising the streets of New York

15:00 scanning for unprotected Wi-Fi networks

15:03 currently we have 260 networks and we've

15:05 traveled about what one yard security

15:07 expert Chester Wisniewski finds almost a

15:10 quarter of wireless networks have weak

15:12 or no protection leaving emails

15:15 financial accounts everything exposed I

15:18 would see their instant message

15:19 conversations the photos they're sharing

15:21 and when you're on the go remember that

15:23 free public Wi-Fi comes with a privacy

15:26 risk - is it safe for me to go on there

15:29 it's very easy for an intruder to see

15:32 pretty much everything you're doing it's

15:34 an opportunity for hackers some setting

15:36 up fake Wi-Fi hotspots to entrap you

15:39 when we set up a free Network called

15:41 free public Wi-Fi we've got three

15:43 androids and two iPhones in an iPad

15:45 users were logging in in less than five

15:48 minutes some simple tips put your router

15:51 in the center of your home not near the

15:53 window always accept the software

15:56 updates on your phone and watch those

15:58 passwords make them difficult the longer

16:00 the better here for your gray important

16:03 steps to prevent anyone from peeking

16:06 into our entire lives Lindsay Davis ABC

16:09 News

16:10 all right Lindsay thank you when we come

16:12 back here tonight what we're now

16:13 learning about Joan Rivers and as summer

16:15 winds down the vacation hero tonight two

16:18 swimmers one hammerhead shark and the

16:21 guy who began yelling from his balcony

16:23 he's right here next our instant index

16:28 here on this Labor Day Monday and Joan

16:29 Rivers so much concern about the 81 year

16:31 old comedian and her help tonight she's

16:33 still fighting for her life unconscious

16:35 after going into cardiac arrest last

16:37 Thursday following an outpatient

16:39 procedure

16:39 tonight sources saying she is sedated in

16:42 serious condition with her family by her

16:44 side they say they are grateful for the

16:46 outpouring of love prayers and support

16:47 and of course we're pulling for her too

16:49 and a home video nearly gone awry watch

16:52 this a family on vacation at a lake they

16:54 own their own drone an expensive camera

16:57 flying overhead capturing the moment but

16:59 the battery wasn't fully charged the

17:01 drone descends and the dad comes running

17:03 to the rescue emptying his pockets and

17:04 then sprinting into the water to save

17:07 not only the family's expensive toy

17:08 caught on tape not to mention the family

17:11 memory is saved at the hero tonight and

17:13 just when you thought it was safe to get

17:14 back into the water a hammerhead shark

17:16 two swimmers at a beach in Florida and

17:18 they were not alone watch the top

17:20 left-hand corner of your screen there

17:21 there's the shark the guy filming trying

17:23 to warn them from his balcony shouting

17:25 and today he described to our producers

17:27 what it was like to watch that near-miss

17:29 man it was like a train wreck

17:32 but if that fish had gotten close to him

17:33 you know they might have been in trouble

17:35 I don't even know if they understood

17:37 what we were saying but my whole theory

17:39 is if somebody's yelling at you you know

17:42 high up on a balcony you need to get out

17:44 the water I'd say that's pretty good

17:46 advice good advice indeed and one more

17:48 note something on your Labor Day list to

17:50 do a lot of viewers reaching out to us

17:52 noticing that their DVRs weren't working

17:54 because we added tonight into the world

18:08 tell us right here what they are most

18:10 excited about you won't believe what

18:12 they say

18:14 ABC World News Tonight with David Muir

18:18 brought to you by BP and finally tonight

18:24 here I still remember my first day of

18:26 kindergarten pulling up on the school

18:28 bus everyone else getting off and then I

18:29 turned to the bus driver and said this

18:31 isn't for me

18:32 she still got me off that bus and

18:34 somehow the kid gardeners of today seem

18:36 a lot more confident just listen to what

18:38 they're most excited about tonight he

18:48 started out today with a simple question

18:50 on Twitter are your children excited for

18:52 the first day of school some of them

18:54 most excited about their backpack here's

18:59 Isabelle with her new backpack still

19:01 waiting for her new teeth tonight and

19:03 there was Dalia who's not entirely ready

19:12 and we love Jonah future astronaut I

19:15 can't wait to go to kindergarten my

19:21 pants this is my slut bottle and Jonah's

19:31 not alone 3.7 billion kindergartners

19:34 going to public school this year start

19:36 saving for college

19:37 Jonah's graduating in the year 2027 and

19:40 we did the math today that means 2340

19:43 school days before he graduates and then

19:46 there was Julia Rochester New York she

19:48 took this to the end of the driveway

19:49 there shall be tomorrow morning and
