Kukla died peacefully
among family in her
Sears, Michigan home,
September 29, 2017, fol-
lowing a short but in-
tensive battle with can-
cer. She was 67.
Penny was born June
18, 1950 in Saginaw to
Welby and Delorise
(Martin) Erskine Jr. She
graduated from Arthur
Hill High School in Sagi-
naw in 1968. She became
a Registered Nurse after
attending classes at Del-
ta College. She worked
for Covenant Medical
Center in Saginaw, retir-
ing in 2007, then went on
to work for Cadillac
Mercy Hospital for a
couple of years. Penny
married Stanley George
Kukla April 22, 1997 in
Las Vegas and he pre-
ceded her in death May
30, 2005. Penny enjoyed
hand crafts, such as
knitting and crocheting
Mrs. Kukla is survived
by two daughters, Man-
dy (Robert) Helveston
of Ypsilanti, Alicia En-
gler of Big Rapids, a
step-daughter, Aimee
Kukla of Montrose, and
a step-son, Joseph (Can-
dice) Kukla of Rich-
mond, Texas; six grand-
children, Myra Helves-
ton, Lauren Kukla, Al-
exandria Kukla, Antho-
ny Kukla, Joseph Kukla,

Moose Lodge and a
member of VFW Post
No. 7979, Evart. Mr. Tu-
ten loved spending time
with his family and was
an avid outdoorsman
who enjoyed hunting,
fishing and gardening.

Osceola cancer nurse honors life and death realities with ArtPrize entry

ple find out that local artist
Amber (Lentz) Jacksons
day job is working with
people fighting the tough-
est battle of their lives, she
is usually asked the same
question without fail.
Ive worked with cancer
patients for 12 years, and
when people hear that,
they want to know how I
can stand to work in this
field for so long, she said.
Working with chemother-
apy patients has a really
high burnout rate.
Jackson, a 1998 graduate
of Reed City High School
and a registered nurse for
15 years, has chosen to
spend the last decade work-
ing closely with patients
undergoing radical che-
motherapy to treat various
forms of cancer.
But Jackson, who admits
the work can be stressful
and emotional, has found
a way to be fulfilled by the
work instead of letting it
drain her emotionally.
And that is where her
passion for art comes in,
and why now, Jackson has
been chosen to share how
she sustains her career in
cancer with her ArtPrize
entry.
In what is known all
across the nation as the
worlds largest public art
competition, artists of all
mediums are given special
invite to display their proj-
ects all across the Grand
Rapids area.
Nationally, people travel
to visit Michigan to view
the art and then vote for
their favorite in a contest
with over $500,000 worth of
prizes. The contest is cur-
rently underway and runs
through Oct. 8.
Artists submit their
projects, along with a story
describing the work to a
committee. For an artist
to be selected, they must
be invited to display their
project at a venue in Grand

their families as they un-
dergo treatment, but she
sees her job as more than
just helping to keep the pa-
tients as physically healthy
as she can while they fight
their battle.
She sees her role as an aid
in their spiritual journey,
too. She said it is about
more than the outcome of
their treatments for ma-
ny, the difficult treatment
process itself is meaningful
and emotional, too.
Victory would be cur-
ing people from cancer,
but sometimes it is about
helping people find comfort
and a peaceful passage into
the next realm, she said,
noting that her years of
experience have taught her
that many people have an
unhealthy stigma about
they have options on how to
face their journey, and the
dignity in that, she said.
I love to help people find
that.
To honor that message,
Jackson said her art piece
is for the patients and their
families, and demonstrates
a respect she has for the
way they learn to face their
battle.
The nurse, who said she
dabbles in art of several
mediums, has displayed
photography in the past fea-
turing her patients and her
cancer journey, but this is
the first time she has used
a tangible item in this
case, cancer medicine caps
to showcase the cancer
battle.

Dozens of twins gathered for lunch Tuesday during spirit week at Evart High School.

Festivities kicked off with Macaw Monday, as students dressed in the parots colors according to their classes.
