ENDOSCOPY PROCEDURES

Course Title: NURSING CARE OF CLIENTS WHO WILL UNDERGO THERAPEUTIC AND
DIAGNOSTIC ENDOSCOPY PROCEDURES

Course Description: The course is intended to provide nurses particular knowledge about therapeutic and diagnostic
endoscopy procedures and enhance their cognitive skills, interpersonal skills and decision making
operative procedures in endoscopy

Training hours: 8 hours per day for 3 months

Course Objectives: The course aims to establish and familiarize the basic concepts about the different procedures in the
endoscopy unit and understanding the different equipment and techniques used which is essential in
giving total quality patient care.

Description of the Learners : The nurses are on their training for a special area like endoscopy unit having gone through a four
years of bachelor degree and passed the licensure exam the necessary training is one of the
requirements to be an endoscopy nurse.

Description of the Setting: The clinical exposure will take place at the Endoscopy Room of Institute of Digestive Diseases, St.
Lukes Medical Center, Quezon City.

Length of Exposure: The schedule of training at the Endoscopy unit will be five days a week for 3 months. The nurse
trainees are scheduled in the morning shift (7:00am-3:00pm).

Method of Evaluation: There will be pre and post conferences to share their experiences, learnings and understandings and
even problems that they encountered during their exposure. This will allow them to improve more
learning through their experiences. Nurse trainees will also be gauged in their performance through
the use of a checklist with regards on how they perform in the procedure and the mastery of
equipments and different criteria for them to evaluate if they act as a professional nurse and the
safety of their patient is the number one priority.

Nurse trainees performance and grade will be evaluated and obtained on the basis of the following:

ACTIVITIES:

Clinical Exposure activities for hospital nursing include the following:

a. Pre-conference it helps to know the activity for the day, discussion of basic concepts and demonstration of clinical skills performed.
b. Clinical Exposure it is an actual experience being an Endoscopy nurse guided by the preceptor
c. Post-conference it is an evaluation where in nurse trainees will give their insights, feedback and learning that theyve encountered
during the exposure.
d. Written Evaluation (Rating System) it will assess the trainees performance through the use of different checklist with different
criteria and will help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the trainees, the things that they need to improve, the skills that needs
enhancement.

The purposes of evaluation are as follows:

1. It will help the trainees to be more competent on their job and able to assess the things that they need to improve.
2. It will help to develop their skills and enhance their abilities as a professional endoscopy nurse.
3. It is a guide to attain their goals in performing their job and in giving the best quality of care to their patients.
4. It will encourage the trainees to accomplish ones task and do their best towards improvement of ones performance.
5. It will help preceptors in assessing nurse trainees performance in terms of skills, abilities and attitude.
6. It will help nurse trainees to have a better understanding on their job and helps assess their skills and know themselves better.
