Assignment 2 CB Transient Analysis

The diagram shows a 3-phase generator supplying a delta connected load via a
cable.

CB cable
G load

generator

Circuit parameters:

Generator Cable Load

Inductance ( H ) 800 245 600

Cap. to earth ( F ) 0.66 - 0.05

The generator neutral which is not earthed has a capacitance to earth

CN 0.46 F .

The circuit breaker (CB) opens to break balanced load current I 1sin 100t .

Determine the source side and load side voltage transients and hence obtain the
re-striking voltage across the CB when:

(i) the first phase clears.

(ii) the second and third phases clear.

Write a brief report including:

(a) Circuit (and possible reduction). Equations to be solved.

(b) Algorithm used to solve the problem.

(c) Solution graphs of CB voltages versus time.

You will be required to demonstrate your work individually.
