and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an accurate summary of the text
based upon this analysis.

TITLE (if applicable): Summary and Analysis

Brief Overview (Summary) of the Unit:

This lesson is created to teach the concept of analyzing/summarizing text to elementary and middle
grades students. The teacher will address the class and begin with a definition of summarizing and
analyzing. The teacher will then provide an example of summary. The students will be presented
with three separate texts (one will be read aloud by the teacher, one will be read by the students
quietly at their desks, and one will be read in groups). After each reading the teacher will call upon
students, at random, to summarize what they have heard (or read) and then there will be a brief
discussion concerning the different aspects of how to summarize and what things should be
included in a summary. The lesson will conclude with an informal summative assessment whereby
the teacher asks each student to come up with their own definition of summarizing.

Teacher Definition of Summary/Analysis and Example

1. Begin class by introducing the lesson, give a brief summary of the objectives, and
begin with a definition of Summary and an example.

Summary: a brief statement or account of the main points of something in your own
words.
Analysis: detailed examination of the elements or structure of something
Example:
o Ask if the students have seen the Disney film Moana.
o Once students have affirmed that they have or have not seen the film give
them a short summary of what happened.

An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her

people. Along the way, Moana befriends the ancient Samoan God
Maui and helps him to regain his powers. Moana fulfills the
ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she
always sought: her own identity.

o Ask the students to identify the key elements of the story.

Give the students this summary of the description.

A girl sails out to sea to save her people. She succeeds and
discovers her own identity too.

o Explain the importance of keeping the key elements of something so that it

still makes sense while keeping the sentences short and to-the-point.
o Ask the students if they understand or have any questions about summary or
analysis. Commented [JF1]: This is the piece of the lesson plan

3. Read aloud passage one and ask 1 to 2 students to summarize the passage.
(Remind them that their summaries should be 2 to 3 sentences maximum)

4. Have the students read passage two, individually, and then ask at least 2
students to share their summaries (Give the students no more than 10 seconds to read
the passage).

5. Have the students go into 2 groups to discuss the third passage and come up
with a summary. Once they have finished ask a member from each group to tell
you what they have written down. (Give the students no more than 15 seconds
for group work)

Group 1: Dev and Savannah

Group 2: Ava, Jasmine, and Ethan

6. Exit Ticket

Ask the students if they can give you their own definition of summary and
how it works. (You do not need to ask all the students for a definition
unless time permits)
