Uma vez, vinha eu num carro electrico entretendo a rapidez prolongada do
transito com a leitura do livro de Blass sobre a Philologia dos Evangelhos.
Um amigo meu, que calhou entrar, teve uma anotao prolixamente portu-
gueza para a natureza do meu entretenimento. Parecia-lhe absurdo que eu,
que quasi no sei grego, e nenhum hebreu sei, me pudesse preoccupar com
os detalhes debatidos do texto da Boa-Nova christista. Eu no expliquei cousa
nenhuma, porque estas cousas nunca se podem explicar. O meu critico no
percebia que o texto dos evangelhos uma realidade da Terra, como a luz e
as flores, e que eu seria de um sectarismo de barbaro se me interessasse pelos
cravos e as magnolias sem tambem me interessar pela doxologia de S. Matheus.

One day, I was in a tram entertaining the prolonged fastness of the traffic
with the reading of Blass book on the philology of the gospels. A friend of
mine, that happened to enter, passed a very Portuguese comment as to the
nature of my entertainment. It seemed to him absurd that I, with hardly any
knowledge of Greek, and none at all of Hebrew, should be worried about the
details debated on the Christian texts. I did not explain, because these things
can never be explained. My critic could not understand that the text of the
gospels is a reality of the Earth, like light and flowers are, and that I would
be of a barbarian sectarianism if I were interested in carnations and magno-
lias without being also interested in St. Matthews doxology.

lugar onde o leitor se encontra rodeado de centenas de queridos
amigos encarcerados que s sero libertados quando com eles se
iniciar uma conversa2. Fernando Pessoa, que teve uma profunda e
prolongada relao com os livros da sua biblioteca entre os quais se conta the books of his library among which The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson ter libertado muitos desses amigos; o
volume do ensasta e poeta norte-americano, tal como outros livros sublinha-
dos e anotados da sua Biblioteca particular, testemunha precisamente um
fecundo e duradouro dilogo. Foi, assim, a partir da sua vasta memria de lei-
tor dialogante, que Pessoa, a 29 de Novembro de 1935, no Hospital de S. Lus
dos Franceses, redigiu as suas ltimas palavras (I know not what to-morrow
will bring) (ilus. 1) 3, eco evidente de um epigrama de Palladas de Alexandria
(To-day let me live well; none knows what may be to-morrow) (ilus. 2) 4, pu-

n Emersons essay Books, a library is revealed as a place where the re-
ader finds him/herself surrounded by hundreds of dear but imprisoned
friends who will only be released when a conversation with them starts. 2
Fernando Pessoa, who had a profound and enduring relationship with
set free many of those friends; the volume of this North American essayist
and poet, just as many other underlined and annotated books from his
private library, witness precisely a fertile and long lasting dialogue. And so it
was, that, from his vast memory as a dialoguing reader, Pessoa, on the 29th of
November 1935, at the French S. Luis Hospital, wrote his last words (I know
not what to-morrow will bring) (Fig. 1), 3 clear echo of an epigram by Palla-
das of Alexandria (To-day let me live well; none knows what may be to-mor-
row) (Fig. 2), 4 published in the first volume of The Greek Anthology (1916),
and preserved on the shelves of his private library until the end of his life.

 Fernando Pessoas private library (BpFP) that collection which we have dig-
italised, explored and catalogued again was gradually constructed between
the end of 1898 and the autumn of 1935.5 It is a Portuguese authors library,
but, as most of the books are in English, it actually seems to be more of an
English authors library who had a need to turn to French translations and a
special interest in Portuguese literature.6 Pessoa used to buy his books at the
English bookstore in Lisbon,7 and very often ordered books from England.
Many of the Portuguese titles that make up his private library were given to
him, as revealed in the various personal dedications. 8 Therefore, if we did
not know who the owner was, it would be quite difficult to guess he was a
Portuguese writer; specially, since great part of the manuscript notes appear
in English, some references take us back to South Africa and many books are
signed with the name of Alexander Search or other English names.
The BpFP has 1311 titles in eight different languages (Italian, French, Gali-
cian, Greek, English, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish),9 encompassing all
areas of knowledge. Following the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC),10
(see the title of each class in the main list), class 8 (Linguistics. Philology.
Literature) contains more than half the volumes, and class 1 (Philosophy.
Psychology), which has 181 titles, also occupies a considerable amount of
the archive. The collection contains books, magazines, newspapers, and press
cuttings which were acquired in different ways: scholarly prizes, purchases
(direct, by mail, and second hand), gifts and inheritances, among others. 11
It is in fact a unique library in Portugal in which we find titles that no other
public library shelters (Secret Shakespearean Seals, for example; see 8-481)
and some that within a world context are also rare (The Encyclopaedia of Wit,
for example; see 0-33). Furthermore, the existence of notes, commentaries,
verses, translations, strokes and sketches, all handwritten by Pessoa, make
many of his books quite unique.

Make librarys catalogue (Mine) (BNP/E3, 28-95). This is one of the many
purposes that Pessoa reveals on a list of tasks, presumably from 1913. Others
are: Espronceda, Tachigraphic system, Table football game, Write to
Yeats about the Irish revival, The Poetry Society enter, Ask for a speci-
men of H[arold] Monros journal, and the Poetry Bookshop catalog and
Order papers, books, etc. (see Appendix II). If Pessoa, as Antonio Mega
Ferreira observes (2005: 162), had actually catalogued his library, perhaps we
would know much more about it today and be able to come even closer to
his virtual library, which would be tentatively composed of all the books
[Pessoa] bought during his life, including those which were no longer there
at the time of his death.
These are precisely two of the aims that guided our work: make a new cata-
logue of Pessoas library and approach its virtuality. Our purpose is, thus,
first, to offer a revised and enlarged version of the librarys official catalogue;
second, make a listing of the books that Pessoa owned by the time of his
death, but which, with the passing of time, dont form part of the collection
anymore; and, third, make known numerous books that passed through its
shelves, but were sold while Pessoa was still alive. Pessoa did not make a
catalogue for his library, but enthusiast as he was of lists, he left many, some
of which especially useful so we may come even closer to his virtual library
(see appendix II).

In the summer of 2009 we concluded with the valuable collaboration of
researchers and friends, the support of the House of Fernando Pessoa and
the writers heirs the digitalisation of the BpFP. This project familiarised us
with the books existing today and made us realise the necessity of preparing
a new, revised and enlarged, bibliographical list. Among the reasons we may
call upon, we highlight the following:
There are several lists of the BpFP, all very different among each
other: the pioneering one, Notas dos Livros da Biblioteca do Poeta
Fernando Pessoa | (trabalho incompleto ) [Notes on the Books of the
Poet Fernando Pessoa | (incomplete work)], by Maria Aliete Galhoz
(1953); the second, which only includes Obras em lingua inglesa
[English Language Works], by Maria da Encarnao Monteiro
(1956); the third, quite long, though never published, by Jaime Her-
culano da Silva (1980); the fourth, which contains incomplete and not
always reliable records, was, as the latter, never published by Maria da
Conceio Azevedo (1994); and the fifth, the official one, released in
Tabacaria, n. 0, by Elsa Conde (1996).
The BpFP, after purchased by the Portuguese government, was
deposited at the House of Fernando Pessoa, in 1993. However, more
than 10% of the volumes remained with the authors family, and
therefore were not included in Condes inventory (1996). Patricio Fer-
rari (2008) catalogued these titles, most of which are still in posses-
sion of the heirs (cf. Ferrari, 2009: 209-210).
Some other books, journals, newspapers and press clippings at the
Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, integrated in the Archive no. 3 (BNP/
E3) happened not to be included in the 1996 official list. These have
been mostly inventoried by Ferrari (2009).

A Biblioteca particular de Fernando Pessoa (BpFP) essa coleco que digi-
talizmos, percorremos e agora voltamos a catalogar ter sido construda,
gradualmente, entre fins de 1898 e o Outono de 1935 5. Trata-se da biblioteca
de um autor portugus, contudo, atendendo ao facto de a maior parte dos
livros estar escrita em lngua inglesa, parece antes a biblioteca de um autor
ingls que tivesse a necessidade de recorrer a tradues francesas e algum
interesse especial pela literatura portuguesa 6 . Pessoa comprava livros na
Livraria Inglesa de Lisboa 7 e encomendava livros da Inglaterra com alguma
assiduidade. Muitos dos ttulos portugueses que constam na sua biblioteca
foram-lhe oferecidos, como o revelam diversas dedicatrias 8 . Por isso, se no
soubssemos quem foi o proprietrio, dificilmente adivinharamos que foi
um escritor portugus; at porque uma grande parte das notas manuscritas
esto em ingls, algumas referncias remetem para a frica do Sul e vrios
livros esto assinados por Alexander Search ou outros nomes ingleses.
A BpFP est constituda por 1311 ttulos, estando nela representadas oito
lnguas (Espanhol, Francs, Galego, Grego, Ingls, Italiano, Latim e Portu-
gus) 9 , e abrange todas as classes de conhecimento. Seguindo o sistema
de Classificao Decimal Universal (CDU) 10 (v. ttulo de cada classe na lista
principal), a classe 8 (Lingustica. Filologia. Literatura) contm mais da
metade dos volumes, sendo que a classe 1 (Filosofia. Psicologia), com 181
ttulos, ocupa tambm uma parte considervel do acervo total. A coleco
est composta por livros, revistas, jornais e recortes de imprensa adquiridos
atravs de diversos meios: prmios escolares, compras (directas e por corres-
pondncia), aquisies em segunda mo, ofertas, heranas, entre outros 11 .
Trata-se de uma Biblioteca nica em Portugal, na qual figuram ttulos que ne-
nhuma outra biblioteca pblica do pas albergar (Secret Shakespearean seals,
por exemplo; v. 8-481) e alguns que dentro de um contexto mundial tambm
so raros (The Encyclopaedia of Wit, por exemplo; v. 0-33). Alm disso, a exis-
tncia de notas, comentrios, versos, tradues, traos e desenhos manuscri-
tos por Pessoa tornam relativamente nicos muitos dos seus exemplares.

e poderamos aproximar-nos ainda mais da sua biblioteca virtual, que seria
conjecturalmente composta de todos os livros que [Pessoa] comprou durante
a vida, incluindo os que j l no estavam data da sua morte.
So estes precisamente os dois objectivos que orientaram este nosso traba-
lho: fazer uma nova catalogao da biblioteca de Pessoa e aproximarmo-nos
da sua virtualidade. Propomo-nos assim, em primeiro lugar, oferecer uma
verso revista e aumentada do catlogo oficial da biblioteca; segundo, fazer
um levantamento de livros que estiveram na posse de Pessoa aquando da sua
morte mas que com o passar do tempo deixaram de fazer parte da coleco;
e, terceiro, dar a conhecer numerosos livros que tero passado pelas suas
prateleiras mas que foram vendidos ainda em vida. Pessoa no catalogou a
sua biblioteca, mas aficionado como era s listas, deixou muitssimas, algu-
mas delas especialmente teis para podermos chegar ainda mais perto da sua
biblioteca virtual (v. apndice II).

No Vero de 2009 conclumos com a valiosa colaborao de investigadores
e amigos, o apoio da Casa Fernando Pessoa e dos sobrinhos-herdeiros do es-
critor a digitalizao da BpFP. Este projecto familiarizou-nos com os livros
hoje existentes e fez-nos tomar conscincia da necessidade de preparar uma
nova lista bibliogrfica, revista e aumentada. Entre os motivos que podemos
invocar, destacamos os seguintes:
Da BpFP existem vrias listas, todas elas muito dspares: A pioneira,
Notas dos livros da Biblioteca do Poeta Fernando Pessoa | (trabalho
incompleto), por Maria Aliete Galhoz (1953); a segunda, que s inclui
Obras em lngua inglesa, por Maria da Encarnao Monteiro (1956);
a terceira, bastante extensa, mas nunca levada ao prelo, por Jaime
Herculano da Silva (1980); a quarta, que contm registos incompletos,
nem sempre fiveis e, como a anterior, nunca publicada, por Maria da
Conceio Azevedo (1994); e a quinta, oficial, divulgada na Tabacaria,
n. 0, por Elsa Conde (1996).
A BpFP, aps a compra pelo Estado Portugus, foi depositada na Casa
Fernando Pessoa, em 1993. No entanto, mais de 10% dos volumes fica-
ram com a famlia do escritor, pelo que no figuram no inventrio de
Conde (1996). Patricio Ferrari (2008) catalogou estes ttulos, a maioria
deles ainda na posse dos herdeiros (cf. Ferrari, 2009: 209-210).
Na lista oficial de 1996 acabaram tambm por no ser listados livros,
revistas, jornais e recortes de imprensa que se encontram na Biblio-
teca Nacional de Portugal, integrados no Esplio n. 3 (BNP/E3), e na
sua maioria j inventariados por Ferrari (2009). 15

 The lists of the BpFP contain several inaccuracies and errors. It was
very pertinent to consult the original books anew and benefit of more
elaborate and sophisticated research conditions, namely tools as the
World Catalogue, the SUDOC (Systme Universitaire de Documenta-
tion), the PORBASE (National Bibliographic Database), the catalogues
of some great libraries (the British Library and the Bibliothque na-
tionale de France, for example) and other important electronic reposi-
tories (like the Digital Newspaper Archive and the National Digital
Library, in Portugal). These tools allow the verification and comple-
tion of diverse data and information when we face several editions
or a book with no date, for example evidencing the rarity of some
exemplars of the BpFP.
Regarding this new bibliographical list, the following methodological fea-
tures should be highlighted:
We followed the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), previously
used by Conde (1996), who apparently did not consider the main
class subdivisions.

The library numbers attributed by the House of Fernando Pessoa
to the different bibliographic species under its custody were main-

Oliveira, attributed, at our request, a library number to all the volumes
owned by Manuela Nogueira Rosa Dias (library number + MN) and
Lus Miguel Rosa Dias (library number + LMR) listed by Ferrari
(2008).
Some books, journals, newspapers and press clippings were not included in
the new list of the BpFP. We here refer their localisation and a brief descrip-
tion. We excluded:
We do not know where some of the press clippings kept at the
Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal [Portuguese National Library] (BNP/
E3) come from: 1158-16a; 135-7, 23 a 30, 32, 34, 35, 40 a 51, 62, 64,

 As listas da BpFP contm numerosas gralhas e erros. Foi muito
pertinente voltar a consultar os exemplares originais e beneficiar de
condies de pesquisa mais alargadas e sofisticadas, nomeadamente
ferramentas como o World Catalogue, o SUDOC (Systme Universitaire
de Documentation), a PORBASE (Base Nacional de Dados Bibliogrfi-
cos), os catlogos de algumas grandes bibliotecas (a British Library e
a Bibliothque nationale de France, por exemplo) e outros importantes
repositrios electrnicos (como a Hemeroteca Digital e a Biblioteca
Nacional Digital, em Portugal). Estas ferramentas permitem verificar
e completar diversos dados e informaes quando existem mlti-
plas edies ou um livro carece de data, por exemplo evidenciando
tambm a raridade de alguns exemplares presentes na BpFP.
Sobre esta nova lista bibliogrfica, so de salientar os seguintes aspectos de

listados no passado por algum ou alguns investigadores (Galhoz, Monteiro,
Severino, Silva, Conde, Coelho ou Abreu). Dado que se trata de livros e revis-
optmos por no os incluir na lista principal. Entre essas espcies extra-
viadas, figura, precisamente, The Pickwick Papers, de Charles Dickens, uma
antologia de poesia alem (no original), com tentativas de traduo em lngua
portuguesa por Pessoa, e A History of English Literature, de Edward Jermyn
Mattew, com algumas marginalia (entre as quais uma nota de lvaro de Cam-

assuntos ou propsitos dignos de memria, listas que aproximam a biografia
do estudo da biblioteca pessoana. De facto, a biografia de um autor muito
importante para o estudo da sua biblioteca, tal como o estudo das suas leitu-
ras fundamental para construir uma biografia intelectual. Essas trs listas
(c. 1913) permitem descobrir, por exemplo, onde e quando Pessoa tenciona-
va ler uma reputada revista londrina, Ler o Athenaeum na Bibl[iotheca] da 19
Acad[emia] das Sc[iencia]s, e que livros estavam guardados, para si, na Livra-
ria Inglesa, o que til para datar certas leituras.
Pessoa decidiu vender ou deixar em consignao para a sua venda, e de cuja
venda ou consignao fez um registo. A lista n. 1, por exemplo, que se refere
a 32 volumes contidos (c. 1914) num caixote, permite saber que 4 livros
foram vendidos a 18 de Novembro de 1914. Que aconteceu com os restantes?
S se conservam uns poucos; a maior parte ter sido vendida, o que explica a
ausncia, na BpFP, de obras que tiveram uma grande influncia nos Escritos

 We will leave without comment because they constitute one of the great
surprises of this inventory and speak for themselves most of the remaining
18 lists, which witness the profound interest of Pessoa in the Detective story
and all type of mystery narrations. Where are most of the detective stories
that passed by his hands? The answer is in the final lists. In those lists one

Gospels Philology, read in a tram and reproduced in the epigraph. Why
do we emphasise this? Because if it reveals anything about the BpFP, it is the
liberal and anti-sectarian spirit of its owner: Pessoa justifies thus the read-
ing of the German philologist: I would be of a barbarous sectarism if I were
interested in carnations and magnolias without also being interested in St.
Matthews doxology.
How may we justify this new bibliophile effort? If necessary, maybe using
some of Pessoas own words: A book that belonged to Shakespeare even

o tipo de narrativas de mistrio. Onde esto a maior parte dos policiais que
passaram pelas suas mos? A resposta est nas listas finais. Nessas listas tam
bm figura e merece uma palavra final o livro de Blass sobre a Philologia
dos Evangelhos, lido num carro elctrico e referido na epgrafe. Porque o
destacamos? Porque se algo revela sobre a BpFP, o esprito liberal e anti

A Casa Fernando Pessoa possui um tesouro nico no mundo: a biblioteca
particular desta figura maior da literatura. muito raro conseguir-se encon-
trar uma biblioteca inteira de um escritor com a dimenso universal de Pes-
soa. Os livros tendem a mover-se muito depressa: emprestam-se, perdemse,
vendem-se. O prprio Pessoa vendeu muitos dos seus livros, por razes
de sobrevivncia. Jernimo Pizarro mostra-nos listas de livros feitas pelo
poeta, com a contabilidade das vendas. Nascido na Colmbia, Pizarro veio
para Lisboa atrado pela obra de Fernando Pessoa, fez-se portugus e tem
dedicado a sua vida ao estudo da obra e dos papis do Poeta. Graas sua
dedicao, bem como de Patricio Ferrari, Antonio Cardiello e uma equipa
internacional liderada por estes trs brilhantes investigadores, foi possvel
digitalizar, na ntegra, toda a biblioteca que neste livro se apresenta, de modo
a coloc-la online, disponvel para os estudiosos, em qualquer parte do glo-
bo e, como diariamente verificamos na Casa Fernando Pessoa, o autor do
Livro do Desassossegoapaixona gente de todas as nacionalidades; dezenas de
pessoas desembarcam diariamente em Lisboa em busca do seu rasto.
Trata-se de uma biblioteca preciosa pelo seu valor de manuscrito: Pessoa
no se limitava a ler os livros: sublinhava-os, dialogava com eles em longos
apontamentos margem, escrevia poemas ou ensaios nas pginas de guar-
da. Esta , pois, uma biblioteca que no se limita a falar-nos da variedade e
riqueza de leituras do seu dono, mas nos revela novas facetas do pensamen-
to, dos interesses e da escrita do poeta. Uma biblioteca aberta ao infinito da
interpretao bela, surpreendente e instigante, como tudo o que Fernando

Introductory note
The House Fernando Pessoa possesses an unique treasure: the personal
library
of this great literature figure. Its not very often one can find an entire library
belonging to a writer with Pessoas universal dimension. Books tend to move
very fast: they get lend, lost, sold. Pessoa himself sold many of his books, for
survival reasons. Jernimo Pizarro shows us lists of books made by the poet,
with sales accounting on them. Born in Colombia, Pizarro came to Lisbon
drawn by Fernando Pessoas work, became Portuguese and has dedicated his
life to the study of the Poets oeuvre and papers. Thanks to his dedication,as
well asthat of Patricio Ferrari, Antonio Cardiello, and an International team
guided by these three brilliant investigators, the complete digitalization of
the Library presented in this book was possible, so as to make it available on- 27
line for scholars and researchers all over the globe and , as we daily verify
at the House of Fernando Pessoa, the author of the Book of Disquietudecap-
tivates the attention of all nationalities; dozens of people disembark daily in
Lisbon looking for his traces.
This library is precious thanks to its manuscript value: Pessoa didnt just read
the books: he highlighted them, dialogued with them in long margin notes,
wrote poems and essays in the blank pages. For that, this is a library that
doesnt just speak to you of the variety and richness of its owners readings,
but reveals to us new facets of the thinking, the interests and the writing of
the poet. A library open to the infinite of interpretation - beautiful, surpris-
ing and intriguing, like everything Pessoa created.

Philosophy.

Philosophy looks through the appearance of things not into the heart of things, but into that which makes
their appearence into their inner nature. We all have so much philosophy as enables us to look on the field
of Waterloo, somewhat otherwise than on any other plot of ground. A book that belonged to Shakespeare
even though it have in it no autograph is very different from any other book. Can the meanest of us look
on a certain cottage in Stratford-on-Avon as on a mere cottage? Is the Athenian Parthenon nothing but a
ruin? Are the ruins of Pompeii but excavations?
28 All of us are more or less able to connect the past with the present, to see the lingering of the gone in the
going. Which of us handling a volume, which belonged to some poet now gone, hath not essayed to imagine
the eyes that scanned and the thoughts of him that scanned, may, even to see if those eyes have not left on
the pages the trace of their thoughtful glance, if those hands have not in the turning of those pages im-
parted to them some material heritage? How many of us are there who can see an old castle without filling
it with bright shapes of eld, pages and knights and dames and ought of glorious and of noble that ages to us
great had possessed?
