SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
General Information
Development of the company
Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH was founded in 1991. Since January 2004 the
companys head office has been in Oberndorf near Salzburg. Up to 1996 the
company was trading in well-known products which were used for avalanche and
rockfall protection systems. In 1996 Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH started the
development of the Omega-net. The production of this protection system started in
the same year. In 1996 the company applied for the patent on this net in Switzerland
and shortly after, in 1997, for the European patent. Since 1997 the company has
been producing the Omega-net in Obertrum. Due to a constantly rising demand, an
expansion of the production plant was necessary in 2001.

Product Spectrum
Since the late 1990s, Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH has been offering various
protection systems in the sector of avalanche and rockfall protection. Due to their
modular configuration, these systems are easy to install and easy to adapt to
topographical features. The great flexibility of the systems allows the absorption and
reduction of great kinetic energies. The Omega-net is also used as a preventive
measure for slope and rock stabilisation and for special devices (e.g. afforestation
nets). Furthermore, gabions and various mesh and wire netting products add to the
wide spectrum.

Test Site Erzberg

Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH is always interested
in the further development of their products.
Rockfall protection systems are developed and
tested on the Styrian Erzberg, in close co-
operation with institutes of the University of
Leoben. For this purpose, a test site was created.
It allows the carrying out of in-field tests and,
presently, energy impacts up to 1000 kJ.

The test site is also available for the testing of

products of other companies.

Appendix General Information

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Omega-net in rock-fall protection system

Product Description Omega-net

The Omega-net by Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH consists of single, wave-like
forebent wire ropes which are intertwined. The ropes are made of thickwired,
galvanised spiral ropes which touch each other at the cross points but which are not
connected with each other as no clamps are used. This condition makes the Omega-
net very flexible yet due to the stiffness the ropes also absorb high energy impacts.

As experience shows, the system is easy to install and to maintain:

The product is delivered in

compact packages
The net installation can be carried
out quickly, easily and without
further aids
The flexibility of the net allows an
ideal adaptation to the area
Defective ropes can be replaced
on the spot with the help of simple
aids

For rockfall nets a spiral rope of 7 or 19 wires

with diameters of 6.0mm, 7.5mm, 9.0mm or
12.5mm is used, according to standards. The
curve diameter of the forebending is 125 to
300mm. The tightness of the mesh is adapted
to the features of the location.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Rockfall protection system for an energy impact of 500kJ

Product Description
Rock-fall Protection Systems

Area of Application
Rock-fall Protection Systems serve as secondary protection in possible deposit areas
of rock falls and rock avalanches. They are used for the protection of inhabited areas
and highways.

Basis

Experience gained in decades of international work on rock-fall protection and in-field

tests form the basis of this kind of protection system. National standards and
international regulations are fulfilled by our system.

Installation
Rock-fall Protection Systems by Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH consist of an
interception and a support or retaining structure. The interception structure is formed
by the Omega-net with its outstanding deformability, flexibility and energy absorption.
The support or retaining structure consists of posts, bearing ropes, retaining ropes
and brake elements. The Omega-net is stretched by the upper and lower bearing
rope. Via the posts, both ropes are led to the brake elements at the edge of the
system. The occurring rope forces, which are limited by the brake elements, are led
to the ground via anchors.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Energy reduction is partly reached by plastic deformation of the Omega-net and by
energy-absorbing brake elements. The remaining energy is led to the ground via
anchors. This is done with the help of a connection structure (bearing ropes, retaining
ropes).

Characteristics
Due to their modular configuration, rockfall protection systems by Trumer
Schutzbauten GmbH are easy to adapt to topographical features.

The easy installation of the net packages, the alternatively swimming position of the
bases of the posts (no foundation necessary) and the modular configuration
mentioned above make the installation of rock-fall protection systems by Trumer
Schutzbauten GmbH easier, shorten the time of installation and therefore reduce the
installation costs up to 30 percent.

Method of Construction
The protection system consists of single parts which are combined like a modular
construction system. The length of one part is normally 8 to 12 metres. System rows
can be of any length, but generally intermediate retentions are installed in intervals of
approximately 50 metres if longer rows are used.

Characteristics Base of the Post

The base of the post can be flexible or fixed. If the flexible version is chosen, you can
distinguish between a solid position reached with a construction of anchors and
micro- posts and a swimming position with a retention of the base of the post with the
help of retaining ropes which are lying on the ground. The swimming position does
not require a foundation at the base of the post. For the installation the base of the
post is secured with an installation anchor Gewi diameter 25mm. After the
installation, the anchor nut is slightly loosened to guarantee full mobility of the base
of the post.

Installation
The light elements of the rockfall protection systems by Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH
and the easily installable construction elements make an easy and therefore time and
money sparing installation possible, even under difficult conditions.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
At present, testing has been completed for the following systems:

Avalanche Protection System using Omega-Net

Product Description
Avalanche Protection System using Omega-Net

Area of Application
Avalanche Protection Systems using Omega-Net by Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH,
prevent avalanches in their first stage of occurrence. The nets are nearly invisible in
the area concerned and therefore preserve the scenery. In scenically sensitive areas
they are an aesthetic alternative to traditional snow bridges or snow grill systems.

Basis
Static calculations are carried out in accordance with the Swiss guide lines of the
BUWAL and the WSL (Richtlinien fr den Lawinenverbau im Anbruchgebiet). Since
April 2004 there there have been opportunities to carry out static calculations for the
Avalanche Protection Systems in the company. The systems are tested in the field in
cooperation with the WLV Schwaz.

Installation
For Avalanche Protection Systems by Trumer Schutzbauten GmbH, the Omega-net
is used in rectangular and triangular form. The net is stretched by the upper and
lower bearing rope. The lower bearing rope is led to the edge of the system via
anchors, the upper bearing rope is stretched individually from post to post. The posts
are in a swimming position and are tied back on the mountain side with ropes which
are lying on the ground. A ball-and-socket joint forms the base of the post. The head
of the post is fixed on the valley side with two retaining ropes.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Characteristics
Due to their modular configuration, the Avalanche Protection Systems by Trumer
Schutzbauten GmbH are easy to adapt to topographical features.

The easy installation of the net packages, the swimming position of the bases of the
posts (no foundation necessary) and the modular configuration mentioned above
make the installation of Avalanche Protection Systems by Trumer Schutzbauten
GmbH easier, shorten the time of installation and therefore reduce the installation
costs up to 30 percent.

Advantages
One advantage in comparison with conventional triangular nets is the high flexibility
of the net which ensures an additional rock-fall protection. The optimal mesh size
makes an additional mesh layer redundant. For avalanche protection systems a 7
wired spiral rope is used which has a diameter of 6.0 or 7.5 mm and which is forebent
with a curve diameter of approximately 125 to 150 mm.

Due to the flexible choice of the anchor points, a low-cost installation is possible,
even under most difficult conditions. Slight irregularities in the area can also be
managed easily as the net functions as a strong spring between the bearing rope at
the head and the bearing rope at the base.

The compact net package and the functional support system with the retaining ropes
allow easy work on the flight preparations and on the installation.

Wire Pack Anchor WPA

Wire pack anchors are used anchoring bearing and retaining ropes in falling rock and
avalanche protection systems, in which the direction of the anchor - for drilling and/or
systems reasons - does not correspond with cable forces. In the event of loading, this
causes bending of the anchoring loop, where it exits the borehole.

Wire pack anchor design

Wire pack anchors consist of a bundle of parallel leading contoured wires, diameter 6
mm, which at a distance of 1.0 to 1.5 m are spread and at the same time spaced
from the bore hole wall by means of a spacer (outside diameter 65 mm). This results
in optimum adhesion to the cement mortar. The wire bundle is characterized by rod-
like rigidity for relocation. The wire bundle loop, covered with a corrosion-proof steel
tube may be angled up to 45 around a rock edge, without reducing the wire bundle
anchors breaking force.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Spacing of wires
Wire pack anchor loop 500, 30

Spreading of wires

Corrosion prevention
The cement-filled, corrosion proofed steel tube ensures the wire bundles optimum protection
against corrosion in the loop area. Inside the borehole the wire bundle is protected against
corrosion by the cement mortal. To increase corrosion proofing, the wire bundle may be
placed inside a corrugated PE jacket tube (outside diameter 65 mm), which has been pre-
injected with cement mortar at the plant or is directly filled inside the borehole. To create
distance towards the wall of the borehole, wall cleat band spacers (outside diameter 85 mm)
are mounted at a distance of 1.0 to 1.5 m, which together with the exterior injection duct
measuring 16 x 12 mm, results in a maximum anchor diameter of 95 mm.

SAFETY BY COMPETENCE
Proven performance
The bearing capacity and the fitness of use of the wire pack anchors was
demonstrated in several tests supervised by the Swiss Federal Laboratory for
Materials Testing and Research, the EMPA. (EMPA confirmation no. 434,797 dated
July 9, 2004.) The breaking load of the loop at deflection and point of force is greater
than the breaking strength of the wire bundle itself.

45 deflection, breaking of wire bundle at tensile load of 500 kN.
No reduction of breaking strength at deflection point or attachment location of loop

Shipment
Standard production of wire bundle anchors for mounting and connecting technology
occurs in breaking strengths measuring between 300 to 800 kN, in 100 kN intervals,
installation lengths of 3 to 8 m and integrated injection duct measuring 16 x 12 mm.

Loop casing measurements:

Wire pack anchor WPA 500 to wire pack anchor WPA 800: tube 33.7 x 3,2
mm, outside diameter of loop 135 mm

The loop can be shipped straight or pre-bent at 45.

Installation
The mounting depth is marked red on the loop (loop projection 250 mm). At the loop
end, wire bundle anchors for mounting and connecting technology are marked in
colour for each unit of force:
