AIM:

To measure tensile strength of a single: Glass fiber, Aramid fiber, Carbon fiber

APPARATUS:

Texture analyzer

Materials:

Glass fiber, Aramid fiber, Carbon fiber, paper clip, cyanoacrylate adhesive, gloves, and mask.

Precautions:

Use gloves and mask while handling fibers.

Procedure:

1. Prepare a paper of 35 mm*35 mm and make a slit of size 20 mm*20 mm.

2. Cut a fiber of approximate length of 30mm.

3. Attach fiber to the prepared paper slit by using cyanoacrylate adhesive.

4. Create similar specimens for Glass fiber, Aramid fiber, and Carbon fiber.

5. Open ExponentLite software.

6. Place the specimen in between grips of texture analyzer and tighten grips.

7. Create a new test, input value of pre-test speed as 1mm/sec, test speed 2mm/sec. Keep other
inputs to their default values.

8. Start test by pressing start button.

9. The test will start, and upper grip will start moving in upward direction. And once it reaches
its maximum tensile strength, the fiber will break.

10. The graph will be generated in software, for Force Vs Distance.

11. Note down value of maximum force from the graph.

12. Calculate the strength of fiber by dividing force by cross sectional area.

Observation and Result:

Fiber Name Glass fiber Carbon fiber Aramid fibre

Displacement(mm) 0.567 0.163 0.529
