First Speaker

Good afternoon to the chairperson, opposition and audience. Thanks to the affirmative team
for giving such a brief definition about the topic and we do agree with that. The topic for today's
debate is `Homework Brings More Benefits for Pupils. We, the negative team, believe that
this statement is false.

To stand up our opinion, I will be speaking about homework eats up most of pupils
free time. Our second speaker will be talking about excess homework causes children to feel
burnt out and the third speaker will be explaining about homework that is rarely valuable and
summing up our arguments.

My first point is homework eats up most of childrens free time. This is one of the most
common arguments against homework it eats up the valuable time kids have to spend with
their family, attend extracurricular activities and catch up with friends. As example, pupils only
have time to complete their homework during evening and night which it supposedly be their
family-bonding time or socialise with their friend. For older children, school work may also
compete with part-time and casual work. It can be difficult for them to manage homework with
independent study. So Madam Chairman and my beloved friends, based on the point that I
had elaborated, we believe that pupils should not be burdened with homework. Thank you.
Second Speaker

Good afternoon Madam Chairperson, opposition and friends. The topic for our debate today
is Homework Brings More Benefits for Pupils. We the negative team believe that this
statement is false.

Our first speaker has already stated that homework is supposedly not be given to
children as it eats up most of childrens free time. Today I will be talking to you about the
second point which is excess homework causes children to feel burnt out. According to
Macmillan Dictionary, burnt-out is the state where someone is very tired and has
no energy, usually because of too much work or worry. I strongly believe that most of the
children will agree with my opinion because during school time, pupils will get involved in
lessons and extracurricular activities. After a busy day at school and extracurricular activities
thrown into the mix, sitting down to complete homework can seem like a monumental task
although it is meant to be their reinforcement for the subject. This redundant matter will cause
some children to feel burnt out well before they reach the tough final years of school. In some
cases, homework may even be assigned over term breaks or holidays. This causes severe
stress for some children, leading to issues such as sleep deprivation. Besides, most parents
will take this school break time as opportunity to spend time with their children. If children are
burdened with homework, when will they spend their time together with their parents? So
Madam Chairman and friends, in conclusion homework should not be given to pupils as it will
cause them to feel burnt out. Thank you.
Third Speaker

Good afternoon Madam Chairperson, opposition and friends. To repeat, the topic for our
debate today is Homework Brings More Benefits for Pupils. We the negative team strongly
believe that this statement is false.

Our first speaker has already stated that homework is supposedly not be given to
children as it eats up most of childrens free time. Children will not have the opportunity to
relax, play and spend time with their family as homework is waiting for them. Next, the second
speaker had mentioned about the second point which is excess homework causes children to
feel burnt out. This feeling will occur when children get tired with repetition of same topic.
Now I will explain the third reason why we the negative team believe that children should not
be burdened with homework. For us, homework is rarely valuable and not very effective to
help the children learn at home. Although teachers work hard to set homework tasks that will
engage your child, it is sometimes difficult to see the value in the assignments your child brings
home. It can also be tempting to help your child with their homework (sometimes a little too
enthusiastically), meaning that the benefits of homework as a learning tool are lost entirely.
The volume of homework may also mean that your child is not able to dedicate as much time
to each task as would be ideal.

So Madam Chairman and friends, we the negative team believe that homework should
not be given to pupils as it gives disadvantages more that its good. Thank you.
