Rationale

It is designed to enable engineers to adopt an

interdisciplinary and integrated approach to
engineering.

This course will provide Engineers with a strong

foundation in Mechatronics, which is increasingly
forming a crucial part in the design, manufacture
and maintenance of a wide range of engineering
products and processes.
Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able

to:
Demonstrate the understanding of the fundamentals of
mechatronics.
Evaluate and specify the characteristics or the working
principles of basic sensors, transducers, actuators and
PLCs.
Apply a systematic approach in the design of a
mechatronic system.
Synopsis

The course is made up of the following topics:

1. Mechatronics
2. Sensors and transducers
3. Signal conditioning
4. Digital signals
5. Digital logic
6. Pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical actuation
systems
7. Microprocessors
8. Programmable logic controllers
9. Mechatronics systems.
1. Introducing Mechatronics

Learning outcome
At the end of the chapter, student should be able to:
Demonstrate the understanding of mechatronics,
its relevance
Describe the various forms and elements of
control system: open loop, closed loop, sequential
Recognize the need for system modeling
What is Mechatronics?

Integration of Mechanical Eng, Electrical &

Electronics Eng, Control Eng & Computer
sciences
Examples: Automatic camera
Truck suspension system
Automated production line
What is Mechatronics?

Area of technology involved

Sensor and measurement system
Drive and actuation system
Analysis and behavior of system
Control system
Microprocessor system
Mechatronics

System
Consists of a physical system with input and
output
Concentrate on relationship between input
and output
Mechatronics

Measurement System
Made of three elements:

Sensor: Provide signal related to quantity being measured

Signal conditioner: Manipulate signals for further process
Display: Displaying output signals
Mechatronics

Control System
Used to control output signals

Feedback control: signals fed back from output

Mechatronics

Examples of Feedback Control System

Mechatronics

Open and closed loop system

An open loop system is a control system
without feedback loop
Mechatronics

Open and closed loop system

A closed loop system is an open loop system
with feedback loop.
Mechatronics

Open and closed loop system

Open loop system is simple and low cost
with good reliability but often inaccurate.
Closed loop system is relatively accurate but
it has complex system which is costly.
Mechatronics
Basic elements of a closed loop system

Comparison elements
Error signal = reference value - measured value
Control elements
Decide action to take based on error signal
Mechatronics
Basic elements of a closed loop system

Correction elements
Produce change in the process to correct, (actuator)
Process elements
Tells what is being correct
Mechatronics
Basic elements of a closed loop system

Measurement elements
Produce signal related to the controlled variable, (sensor)
Mechatronics

Example
Mechatronics

Example
Controlled variable : the room temperature
Reference value : the required room temperature
Comparison elements : the person
Error signal : required temperature - measured temperature
Control elements : the person
Correction elements : the switch of the fire
Process elements : the heating by the fire
Measurement elements : a thermometer
Mechatronics

Automatic control of water level

Mechatronics

Example
Controlled variable : water level in tank
Reference value : initial setting of the float & lever position
Comparison elements : the lever
Error signal : difference between the actual and initial
setting of the lever position
Control elements : the pivoted lever
Correction elements : the flap opening or closing of the water supply
Process elements : the water level in the tank
Measurement elements : the floating ball and lever
Mechatronics

Example, Shaft speed control

Mechatronics

Sequential controllers
For controlling time or event driven sequence.
Cam operated switch (Mechanical)

Washing Machine
Mechatronics
Solution Power Supply
Washing Machine
Rectifiers/Regulator

Pressure Sensor
`
Mechatronics

Microprocessor based controllers

Uses programmable memory:
to store instructions
to implement function; logic, sequence, timer, arithmetic
Mechatronics

The Automatic Camera

Mechatronics

The Engine Management System

Mechatronics

The Engine Management System

Mechatronics

Response of systems
Response is not instantaneous
MEMS
(Microelectromechanical systems)
Mechanical devices that are built on to
semiconductor chips
Consists of a microprocessor and
components such as microsensors and
microactuators.
MEMS can sense, control and activate
mechanical processes on micro scale.
Eg:- Airbags in automobiles
Mechatronics

The mechatronics approach

The trend is towards mechatronics
Concurrent design approach instead of sequential
design approach is suitable for mechatronics system
design
