Writing
Read about a person that the writer like most.

I can say that the person I like best is Dian. She is my classmate. When I was at junior
high school, I have known her. I often come to her house and we also study together when
we have difficulties in learning my lesson. Now we go to the same school. We choose the
same program at vocational school. I sit beside her. I like her very much because she is
beautiful, patient, helpful and honest

Now write one of your friends that you like best, use the following questions to guide you to
write
- Write the first time you knew or met her/him
- Write how long you have been together
- Write the characteristic you like or don’t like about him/her. ( shy, polite,
kind, interesting, humorous, responsible, helpful, etc)

V. LANGUAGE FOCUS
A. MODALS
a. Modals used in general.
Study the example below
1. Made can speak English. He lives in Bali
2. We may go home earlier because the teacher is sick
3. You should study hard to pass the exam
4. It is cloudy, it might rain this afternoon
5. Today is Monday, tomorrow will be Tuesday.
6. He could run fast when he was young
7. Tono is seriously sick. He must go to a doctor

The modals in the sentences above are:


Can = dapat/ sanggup
May = boleh
Should = seharusnya
Might = mungkin
Will = akan
Could = bisa/dapat (lampau)
Must = harus

None:
To make negative sentences, put not after modals
Example:
1) I can not speak Chinese but I can speak English
2) I will not (won’t) come this afternoon
3) You may not open the door, it’s very cold.

To make questions, put the modal before subject


Example:
1) Can you speak English?
2) Will your mother come to the party?
3) What will you do after coming home from school?
4) Who can help me cleaning the room?

b. Modals used as request (permintaan)

Note:
1) In making a request you can use:
Will you ................
Can you ................
2) To make it more polite you may add the word ‘please’ at the end of the
sentences. Example: Will you open the door, please?
3) The most polite request is using
would you .............
could you...............or
would you mind ..................
4) “Would you mind” is always followed by verb + ing
Example:
A : Would you mind opening the window, please?
B : Of course not

A : Would you mind not smoking here?(please don’t smoke here)


B : No, that’s all right

c. Modals used in offering


For offering a help use “shall“
Example:
A : Shall I clean the white board?
B : Yes, that’s very kind of you

A : Shall I type the letter?

For offering things use; would you like.....

because she is seriously sick. I will be there for some days; there are some things for you
