Theme: Literature
Topic: Leaving by M.G. Vassanji (short stiry
Skills: 3.1 Listen to, read, view and respond to literary works by:
a. understanding and telling in ones own words the story and poem heard and read, and
giving ones own opinion of the text;

Level 2 viii. Talking about values in the text and whether they are meaningful to ones
life and writing out a simple paragraph on this.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:-
i. Match the moral values with the explanation based on the short story.
ii. Write about the most important moral value they have learnt from the
short story.

Materials: Crossword puzzle, anchor chart, a set of moral values with its explanation,
Worksheet 1.

Procedures:
Stages Teaching and Learning Activities Teaching Aids
Set induction 1. Teacher distributes a crossword puzzle to each - Crossword puzzle
5 minutes student.
2. Teacher instructs the students to complete the
crossword puzzle.
3. Teacher discusses the answers with the
students.
Explanation 4. Teacher explains about one of the literature - A set of moral

contains an excerpt from the short story and
the moral values to each student.
6. Teacher instructs the students to find their pair
based on the excerpt and the moral value.

stations and give feedbacks or comments to
the other groups.
14. Teacher calls each group to present the
feedback and comments that they get from
other groups.
15. Teacher conducts a discussion with the class
as a whole.

To achieve his dream of studying overseas, Aloo took
Initiative the trouble to write to universities in America to get the
necessary information

Both Aloo and Mother were strong and courageous to


stand up to what they believe in. Aloo felt that he should
Courage and be allowed to accept the scholarship and study overseas.
He pointed out his willingness to repay her and
strength to stand up promised not let his mother down. His mother also held

to ones principles to her beliefs that children who leave the country are not
likely to return. As a mother, she did not want to let go.

Aloo wrote to many universities and his letter-writing


Determination took him the rest of the year meaning it involved a few
months. But he was determined to know as much as he
brings success could. Finally he succeeded in getting a satisfying reply
to his efforts.

Mother was initially against letting Aloo go for overseas


study. She was afraid he would not return after his
Letting go of family studies. Anyway, she was not willing to let him go she
had pinned hopes on him and the narrator. It would be
