INTRODUCTION:
Family planning is increasingly being recognized as essential for social and
economic development in some countries including the Philippines. Thus, the
Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (RPRH Law) mandates
the universal provision of reproductive health (RH) services including family planning.
Moreover, the President of the Philippines during his last SONA for the year 2017 voices
his wish on the strengthening and implementation of the RPRH Law. The Executive
Order (EO) no.12 on attaining and sustaining Zero Unmet Need for Modern Family
Planning recognizes the need to address the unmet need for modern method of
contraception. In lined with this, the Department of Health as the leading agency of
implementing the RPRH Law is improving its Family Planning Program.
During the year 2016, the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) of Municipality
of Sta. Teresita is 79%. On the the 1st quarter of 2017, it increases to a CPR of 88%, and
further increases during the 2nd quarter with a CPR of 91.6%. On the month of July, the
CPR is 91% with a total of 2198 current users and 98 unmet needs.
As an NDP-assigned with the Family Planning program, various activities were
conducted to decrease or attain Zero Unmet Need which is in fact one of the
Legacies of the Philippine Health Agenda. First, we are conducting Information,
Education, and Campaign to the community people with regards to the benefits of
Family Planning and the available commodities we have in the RHU and in the market.
We are also identifying current users and women with unmet needs through home
visitations or house-house visits and Encourage them to use Family Planning
commodities and refer them to the RHM/midwife for FP counselling. During Home visits,
FP commodities such as Pills, condom were being given to couples who are in need,
only if they were already current users and counselling was done. Good family
planning and good medical care brought up a good and healthy family and
community.

Issues:
Most women with unmet need who are 40 years old and above do not want to
use Family Planning commodities due to their belief that they will no longer get
pregnant with their age.
Some women has health problems that is contraindicated to some FP
commodities.
Husbands do not want their partners to use FP commodities.
Most women have to buy family planning commodities to the drugstore due to
lack of FP supply.

Actions taken:
Health education was given to the couple/individuals with regards to the
benefits, side effects, contraindications and other available Family Planning
Methods that they could use.
IEC were given especially to the fact that they will still get pregnant as long as
they still have their menses.

Recommendation:

Availabilty of Family Planning Supply at the Rural Health Unit.
