Running Head: BENEFITS OF TECGHNOLOGIES IN MARINE TERMINAL 2
The word terminal can be used to mean a place whose main activities are market with
loading and loading unloading people or goods. Various known terminals include, bus or train
terminals. It is therefore true to describe marine terminal as stops or stations where ships and
boats are anchored. It should be noted that marine terminal does not solely distinct for ships and
boats, but it just form part of the port where goods and cargo are loaded and unloaded into and
out of a ship, whenever a ship anchors ate the harbor. According to Agerschou, H. (2009), in his
book, Planning and design of ports and marine terminals marine terminals, which is also
transshipped as cargo between different transport vehicles that are meant for onward
transportation.
The transshipment of containers can happen between marine container ships and vehicles
that are used mainly on land. Agerschou explains that whenever ships are used for shipment, the
terminal is said to be maritime container, while that transshipment where trains and trucks are
used is called inland container terminal. The maritime type of terminal tends to be common in
larger ports, where the biggest marine or maritime terminals are commonly found near major
harbors. Agerschou further says that cargo commonly arrives a marine terminal contained in a
single ship where it is further distributed all over various modes to enable it be delivered through
various modes of transportation. From the explanation that is given by the manager of Rotterdam
port, it is seen as a fairly typical way to distribute the cargo that arrives in a large ship of 18000
TEU among the container trains, for example to a volume of 74 TEU each.
The recent decades have been marked with methodological advances in regards to the
container or marine terminal operations. These improvements which involve the evolution of
design and layout have come alongside advanced technologies with many benefits of marine

terminal. This paper therefore requires us to discuss these benefits of marine terminal following
As a common function of both types of marine, maritime and inland terminals, both
terminals are basically endowed with the duty of providing facilities for both the containers that
are loaded and the ones that are empty. In each case, containers that are loaded are relatively
stored over a short period so that they can be transported inwardly. On the other hand, empty
containers have longer period of storage as they await their next use.
Technologies that have emerged from the evolution of design and layout of the marine
terminal have been facilitated by the need to cater for the large volumes of operation that has
continued to grow worldwide. As a result, the experts have been compelled to seek the ways in
which they can come up with the ways that can improve the productivity and the efficiency that
can enable them to meet their customers needs. The expectation of handling large volumes of
containers, larger vessels, and to a greater capacity has raise the operators urge to streamline
their business processes so as to enable them keep competitiveness with other stiff competitors.
Among the new technologies that have been invented and their benefits include; Zebra
Technologies, marine automation, and real time locating system technologies that are expected to
This technological application in the design and layout of the marine terminal makes
easier to receive a real time information data that have been tapped from the asset tags and
converts it into information that is meaningful. This application helps in monitoring and
reporting an overall health of the system that have been installed. With the sophisticated

algorithms that have been tailored, the needs of the marine terminal operations, the events are
interpreted with the help of the available devices which provide the information that are required
Other features of that are found in this application which also bring about further benefits
Automated job stepping- This is a solution that makes it possible to automate the events that
operators require to key in, and removes the use manual in entering the data. This brings about
equipment that enhances monitoring and tracking in real-time., which also provides critical data
information regarding real-time alongside precise location of terminal marine assets. This helps
the automated system in determining the position of the container by use of automated process.
Automated Job Promotion and Container Handoff- other than providing accurate location of
data for an optimized and real-time job-list for CHE operators, this system also ensures that the
assigned tasks are seen in a more efficient way and also limiting manual display methods that
Over-the-Road Truck Management- This feature helps the terminal operators to see the
terminal challenge as they normally appear outside the range of terminal systems that are
automated.

This is also known as a Navies STAR Technology Alliance partner that has commercial
experience in integrating RTLS infrastructure and even tags that have Naviss Marine Terminal
Operating Solution. This solution assists in enabling the terminal operators to increase capacity
and even optimize operations to bring lower costs. The real time architects also ensure the up to
date of the Navis system as well as enabling the operators to react immediately to the changes
