Jimmy Hartmann – Homosexual Acceptance

How do you feel about homosexuals in modern society? What are they doing wrong?

What point is there to judging someone based on their sexual orientation? Did you know that,

“A 2006 study suggested that 20% of the population anonymously reported some homosexual

feelings?” [“Homosexuality.” Wikipedia.org. 2006. Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality> ] Many people in modern day are homosexual.

The definition of homosexual is essentially being attracted to the same sex. Homosexuals such

as Gays and Lesbians should be able to live in modern society as regular normal people as

everyone else does. This topic can be viewed at many angles. Some specific places that have

precise thoughts about homosexuality are in the church, also in the military and also in our

education programs across the country. Homosexuality is not a bad thing and shouldn’t be

treated any different than anything else.

There are many places that homosexuals are accepted but there are also some that do not

except these humans. An environment that accepts homosexuals is the United States Military.

In the past century there has been much controversy in government about the participation of

homosexuals in both government and military. In 1993, President Bill Clinton administered the

“don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. This policy essentially is exactly what it states. They strongly

prohibit neither asking nor telling anyone in the military that you are homosexual. This is a good

start to homosexual acceptance in the government and military. The next step would be to have

the homosexuals comfortable with talking about their orientation and have all the surrounding

people be ok with it. “Seventy-five percent of Americans in a new Washington Post-ABC News

poll said gay people who are open about their sexual orientation should be allowed to serve in
the U.S. military, up from 62 percent in early 2001 and 44 percent in 1993.” [ “Acceptance of

Gay People in Military Grows Dramatically.” The Washington Post. Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. < http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-

dyn/content/article/2008/07/18/AR2008071802561.html > ] This source shows that a poll in

2001 shows that the acceptance of homosexuals in the military has risen. This shows support

from the citizens of the country for the homosexuals to be allowed and accepted into our armed

forces. Overall, the acceptance of homosexuals in the military has risen therefore it shouldn’t be

a problem in everyday society in general.

Homosexuals have feelings too ya know? These ordinary people have spiritual emotions

too. Shouldn’t they be allowed to go to church? Some churches support homosexuals in their

congregations but others do not. Specifically the Catholic Church does not support the

homosexuals in any way. A Gay And Lesbian Acceptance group call GALA helps homosexuals

to get through their problems in modern society. On their webpage they have a story of a man

named, Allan Fiscus. His story with the catholic church is that he let someone know that he was

gay, and that friend told the priest. And then the priest came to his house and told him,” He then

told me that I was being silenced. When I asked why, he said, ‘Because you are a homosexual,

you can’t control your sexual urges and will abuse children.’” [ “This Is My Church! You’re

Stuck With Me!” GALA. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. < http://galaweb.org/StoriesList.php > ]

This statement said to the man can be viewed as absurd. The priest assumed that because he was

a homosexual that he can’t control his sexual feelings? That makes no sense at all that he was

viewed like that just because he is gay. Both Gay and Lesbians should be valued as equal to

straight people both in church and in our modern society. The American Catholic Church

website states the following,” The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage and the social
acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex relationships, but teaches that homosexual persons

deserve respect, justice and pastoral care.” This states that even though that the Catholic Church

feels strongly against the marriage of two of the same gender and also the relationship and the

acceptance of these people, they also believe the respect and just and also pastoral or priest care

for these individuals or couples. This shows that one, the priest from the GALA story is wrong

for saying what he did and also the Catholics show somewhat respect for the homosexuals. The

does not support the thesis because the church is not supporting the free and equal acceptance of

the homosexuals there.

Between Church and State, the government has been more accepting of homosexuals. In

schools they are now teaching more to a diverse spread of children. In elementary grades, they

start to teach to except other no matter who they are, how they feel, or what they look like. “In

public schools across the nation, teachers are now having to question the idea of homosexuality

in the class rooms and how they go about teaching diversity including the gay lifestyle.”

[ “Society more excepting of homosexual lifestyle.” East Tennessean. Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

< http://media.www.easttennessean.com/ > ] This shows the upgrade in acceptance of

homosexuals in education which also supports the thesis.

From the government to church to school, there is a wide variety of acceptance

throughout the United States and the World. What should be done in the world is free and equal

acceptance for everyone. No matter if you’re a homosexual or straight or anything in between.

You should be who you want to be and no matter who tells you or what rules there are; be your

own person. There are many people out there that let what others say about them to get to them.

You should stand up for yourself and be who you want. Look up to the homosexuals accept them

and treat them with respect and equality.
