FatMan Analog MIDI Synth Model 9308 ‘Assembly and Using Manual 1's hard to beat analog synths for fat, punchy bess lines, And for discovering new sounds, nothing comes close to real knobs operating in real time, The FatMan has all ofthe features that give analog i's warm, fll tne in a MIDI controlled package. ‘The classic normalization scheme of twin VOONCF/ VCA and Dual Transient Generators és brought up fo date withthe incusion of Velocity CV not available on pre-MID} synths. FatMan teams from the past by including features that were eccentrctes of classic synths such as @ unique “punch” switch that adds a subte but useful ‘th segment tothe standard ADSR response Details specific tothe installation ofthe FatMan ‘circuit board In the 9308C Desk Top enclosure are ‘covered in the 9308C Supplement. Locate the two ‘L’ brackets that wil be used in this ‘operation and notice that each bracket has one threaded hole and one ‘unthreaded hole. {Attach the “L” brackets tothe cicut beard using machine scrowe ‘through the unthreaded hole secured by nuts. Use a 4-20 X 1/4" screw fo sacute the left bracket. On the right bracket use a anger 4-40 X 172" mactine screw and #4 flat washer to aloo ‘attach the cable clamp to the botiom of the board. Some ‘adjustment of bracket and cable camp postion wil be necessary in the folowing steps, 90 do not fuly ight this hardware yet. (() Attach the ccuit board tothe front panel by passing two 4-40 X ‘Va" ‘screws through the pane into the threaded holes in the brackets. Bend the LEDs #0 they ae paral to the board and can engage the holes provided for them in the front panel. Fuly tghten the screws that pass through the panel io the °L” brackets. coro, FaManMiDi Sype 13 Wiring of the FatMan continues by connecting the wires proviousy soldered to the cuit board to the pots and jacks as detailed in fg 4a8b. Plug the wabmount transformer ito a 120-VAC outlet ‘and toggle the FatiMan power swiich to “ON.” The LED to the let of the switch should ight and if doesn, you ‘should immectatay unplug the unit fom the wal and find ‘ut why. The problem could be nothing more than a dead ‘wall outlet or bad wring of the Power switch 4. Chack the onentaton of al integrated Circuits and polarity of Capacitors (partoulaty C28, C27 and C30-C33 in the ower supply) and diodes (pertculaty O10 and O11) Solder bridges on the circuit board may be the cause or a poor solder connection almost anyenere, \When the POWER LED lights. Some parts WILL get hat during normal operation ‘and these are the 1W resistors that form R17 and the voltage regulators (C14, C19 and 1C20). Some parte Wil get warm over a peviod of 10-15 minutes, particulary the uP and PROM (IC1 and IC3) corors Heat dissipating fin attaches to IC2, Fatan MO} Sy OAH Pot “Geet om.) |v I nothing seems out of place after a few minutes, hook tp a keyboard of other MIDI source to MIDI IN jack and “send in note” (prose a Key, for example). The LED to the fot of the MIDI IN Jack shoukd Bink brief (but bright) in reaponse to each Note On and Note Of! message and ight nearly continuously while wheels are bong moved of for aterouch messages. This testis NOT senslive to felures in other parts of the cirutry {the processor, forietance) and does not require thatthe ‘ransmiting channel of the keyboard and receiving ‘channel ofthe FatMan agree. if you don't get an Incica- ‘on of data fow, frst check to make sure that MIDI is ‘being sent, ether wah a MIDI Sniffer or by simply ‘mondoring the votage on pin 6 of the MIDI connectors {the voltage should fal boty with each message). MIDI i infact coming in, check the components associ ated with this crcutty for proper instalation, polarty and ‘20 on, In particular check IC8 and IC7 and the polaty of ‘dode D1 and LED D2. Check forthe presence of Vac (#5) on pin 14 ofIC7 and pin 8 of IC8. ‘Tho rest ofthe tests are senstive to MIDI Channel Number so al this point eet sectons 1-4 of the DIP svateh {20 they correspond to the Kanemiting channel ofthe keyboard. Most instruments defaut to sending on Channel 4, which on the FatMan means turning S2 ‘sections 1.4 "ON" (dosed). you need to change to ‘another channal for any reason see the chart on the facing page. Remember that many MIDI Keyboards uso Running Status and tum notes off wath a zero Velocty message, The fatman knows this too, but as with any MIDI receiving device, thas to see the frst Note On Statue message to Know that thats the nama ofthe (game, If for any reason K misses that fst message (because t was set to a different chennel or was tumed off 20 & hae “orgotien the cunning status) then i wel not recognize notes. Turning the keyboard off and back on ‘wil reintalze & eo thatthe frst note has the Note On ‘Status word, Sending some event that changes running ‘status (auch as a program change) wil abo work and is vsualy much quicker Prove a key on the keyboard and observe that the LED to the ight of the GATE output lights while the key = down and extinguishes when the key ie released. I thie doesnt happen ang you are gure of channel correspondence, be ‘suspicious of the uP end digital circuitry (C4, 102, C9 and IC7 in pattcula). Check soldering qualty and that a the var jumpere are in place and aigned wah thei ‘graphic, Check for pins roled under at the sockets for the uP and PROM. 18 FetMan MIO! Sth Testing and tuning of the Fethan begins wth the controls set @s shown above With the previous tests competed, its time to stat letening to the FaiMan output. At this time check to soe thatthe agusting disks of al creut board mounted trimmer reaistore are set to midscale (the center of thet range of otaion) Connect an audio cable from the front panel Output Jack to the input of an amp oF sound f5ytem. The ouput level of the fatman is @ fay hot ‘r4dB that typicaly can be several vols peak-to-peak. Start wih the Output level contro tuned down low. Set the other panel contcls ax shown in the Mustraion above. ress a key, advance the output level contol and you should hear a ferly bight and complex tone. if you don't hhear anything, check the obvious fst, make sure the ‘amp fe on, make sure fs speakers are hooked up. Check to see thatthe MIDI actvty and GATE LEDs sBl respond to the keyboard, Re-check all of your work inthe analog Porton of the eiculty, whichis shown in Schematic 6 b. 1 ater taking a brook and checking your work futher, you etl don't see the problem, you wil have to do some ‘Signal tracing to narrow down what pat(s) arent working, ‘Dont Panic. An osciloscope i great for this Hf you have ‘one and know how to use f; but f you dont, the *Signel ‘Tracing the FaiMan" information beginning on page 21 ‘shove how te use Walkman headphones 2s a simpio ‘ignat tracer. ‘Once youre hearing atone trom the output, pan the VCO ‘V2 Mix contrl back and forth and observe thet at each ‘end of the rotaton you hear the sound af a singe ‘esctator. you don't hear a tone atthe etreme Counter ‘ClockWise end (COW), you should examine the compo- penis associated wih VCO #1 as detaled in "Signet ‘Tracing the Fatman on page 21. there's not ouput at ‘the Clockwise (CW) end, VCO #2 is having problems and fis paris should be examined. ‘When you've verifed that both VCOs are oscilating, is ‘ime to Tune Up. The procedure that well use can bo clone by ear, since & only inolves making adjustments to produce tones an octave apart (hardy the kind of thing that requires perfect pitch). Hf you're more comfort raking technicaly correct adjustments, subettute a ‘eaeurement with a frequency counter oF Use Lissajous techniques to precisely set the octaves. Fatman's lowost Cis the one at about 65 Hz. is highest C fs the approx. mately 1040 Hz one, These are not the precise concert corors frequencies for these pitches, but you tune to these ‘more ravonal numbers, the VCO Pitch contol can easly transpose everthing to their exact vals. FatMfan responds to a 4 octave range of notes from MIDI ote number 38 (24h) to note number 84 (54h). Notes ‘outside that range are ignored. We wal name the included nates a& C0-C4 to correapond tothe convention eed by most 4 and § octave keyboards. On most § octave keyboards the upper 12 sem+tones (G#4 - C5) wil not be recognized by the FatMan. if you are using @ 3 ‘octave controter, you muet check to make cute that its lowest key corresponds to MIDI note number 36. te use to have an understanding of whats happening during tuning 80 we recommend that you skp to the Design Analysis DAC TUNING section on page 22 before performing the step-by-step tuning procedure thet fotows, Here's the procedure step-by-step: 4) Rotate the front panel VCO 1/2 Mix contro uly ‘Clock Wise (CW) so that only VCO#2 can ‘be hoard when a note fe played. 2) Play the lowest © (CO) on the keyboard and ‘adjust the front panel VCO Pitch contol for unison withthe corresponding nate on a siano or synth of other in-tune instrument Ifyou are using a synth for your keyboard contoter, #3 output wal be fine, 3) Play the second © (C1) and adjust the DAC Tune ttimmer R13 on the cicult board so that the oecllatr is an octave above the redous pth. Ityou experience problems here, look at IC1, ICA and 1C5 on the digtal side of things. On the GV side, focus your attention on ICB:A &
