1933-1943

1933 the great depression

It was the worst economic downturn in history.


Consumer spending dropped causing declines in industrial output which led
to 15 million Americans unemployed.
The cause was that the nations total wealth expanded rapidly and doubled.
1934 Meanwhile in Germany

The newly established Nazi dictatorship in Germany continued throughout


Austria.
Hitler was Austrian and had spend his life dreaming of a Germany that
included his homeland.
The Nazis made it nearly impossible for Germans to visit Austria as tourists.
1935

Germany began to pass the Nuremburg laws to strip Jews of their civil
rights.
As the president gets sick, Hitler gets the opportunity to take over.
By rising up in position he could take over Germany.
1936

Jesse Owens wins 4 gold metals.


He is remembered for his long jump against Germanys Luz Long.
He lost the first two attempts but by qualifying in the round, he won by
running the broad jump.
1937

This is the memorial day massacre.


The Chicago Police Department shot and killed 10 people.
It took place during the Little Steel Strike.
1938

The Great New England Hurricane, Howard Hughes sets a


new Round the World record of 3 days, 19 hours.
It struck Long Island and Southern New England.
It was one of the worst incidents in England.
1939

World War 2 begins, albert Einstein and president Roosevelt begin the
American A-bomb program.
Britain and France retaliated on September 3.
Germany and the Soviet Union attacked Poland and Britain, France,
India, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany.
1940

Germany and Italy gain control of most of Western Europe,


Winston Churchill becomes the prime minister.
They fight the British troops on the beaches, the Battle of Britain
begins.
The French and British evacuated.
1941

The US joins World War 2 after Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.


Japanese and Germany declare war on the US.
The war in Europe dominated world affairs but Japan caused a threat in
the Pacific.
1942

The Japanese take Guam, Hong Kong, Wake, Singapore, and the
Philippines.
Manhattan project Started, US mobilization of war efforts quick
and effective with car makers to changing to production of
weapons.
Allied forces invade North America, Night club in Boston burns to
the ground.
1943

Italy declares war on Germany.


Allied forces take back North America, Italy surrenders to Allied Forces.
Germany tried to take Italy by getting into Rome, but Italy caught on and
won.
