For50plusyearsthefoundryindustryhasproducedductileirontothesame,almostunchanged,specificationswhich
aredefinedbytheirtensilestrength,yieldstrengthandelongationasdesignatedinthetablebelow:

ThesearethespecificationsbroadlycoveredbyASTMA536

Therehavebeensometechnicaladvancesinthemeantime,specificallyaustemperedductileiron,whichprovideshigher
strengthswithelongationsupto11%.Althoughverygoodproductstheyhavethedisadvantageofrequiringaspecial
andnotinexpensiveheattreatment.

AnewgenerationofductileironshasbeendevelopedbyWillmanIndustries.Thesenewgradesproducehigher
strengthswithevengreaterelongation.Thesegradescanbeproducedascastwithgreateruniformityofcasting
propertiesthantheoriginalductileirongradesshownabove.

WillmanIndustrieshasdevelopedthreenewtentativespecificationswhichareasfollows:

Thesenewgradesdonotexhibitthesectionsensitivityoftheoriginalductileirongrades.Also,thehardnessand
mechanicalpropertiesareextraordinarilyuniformthroughoutallthecastingsections.

Tosimplifythecomparison,themiddlegrade(806018)meetstheelongationrequirement(18%)ofthestandard6040
18,butpossesseshighertensileandyieldstrength.Howeverforthosesolelyinterestedinelongationthereisanew
grade,705521,whichhashigherelongationaswellashigheryieldandtensilestrength.Itshouldalsobenotedthat
theyieldtotensilestrengthratioofthesenewgradesistypically75%whereasthefirstgenerationhasaratioofabout
65%.Thisgivesengineersmoreleewayindesign,sincethelimitofproportionalityishigherforanygiventensile.
Similarlythefatiguestrengthsarehigheratanygivenelongation.
