NG Tube Station

At this station you will have the opportunity to practice inserting an NG tube, connecting the NG tube to
suction, connecting the NG tube to a continuous feeding on the Kangaroo pump.

For this station: (have your partner observe and provide feedback as needed)

Gather your needed equipment


Insert a NG tube
o Secure device to nose and gown
Connect NG tube to suction
o Set suction gauge to full continuous suction
o Disconnect NG tube from suction
Set NG tube up for a continuous feeding on the Kangaroo Pump
o Flow rate = 75ml/hr
o VTBI = 500ml
o Place pump on hold and then restart feeding
o Stop Feeding
Remove NG tube

Supplies: procedure card from Week 8 regarding NG tubes. Set up for 2 manikins.

Specimen Collection from a Foley Catheter


At this station you will have the opportunity to practice collecting a urine specimen from a Foley
catheter.

You will need to:

Gather your needed equipment


Appropriately clean the port
Withdraw urine from the catheter
Place sample in the appropriate urine collection container

Supplies: Foley catheter bag with urine, syringe for collection, container to place specimen in (could just
be a graduated cylinder to transfer specimen into)
Insulin Administration
At this station you will have the opportunity to practice insulin administration. You will need to
determine the amount of insulin appropriate for the blood sugar, locate and draw up the appropriate
amount of insulin and have a partner verify the correct dose drawn up.

You will need to:

Gather your needed equipment


Pick a blood sugar from the container
Determine the amount of insulin that needs to be drawn up using the sliding scale noted on the
MAR
Draw up the appropriate amount of insulin
Have your dose verified by another person

Supplies: 50U and 100U insulin syringes, MAR with sliding scale insulin, multiple blood sugar numbers,
alcohol swabs, insulin

Medication Practice/ Observer Tool


At this station you will have the opportunity to practice giving an oral medication to a patient. You will
also have the opportunity to practice using the observer tool.

Look at the observe tool to see what items you will be looking for during the simulation practice. As a
group have one or two observers while the others give the medications.

Supplies: Sim pad programed so the manikin can answer appropriate questions, several medications in a
medicine cup, water, MAR, arm band (would be nice to switch arm from correct to incorrect periodically
throughout day to see if students notice wrong information)
