VICTOR PET
This taxon was introduced, under Scorpiopsinae (Kraepelin, 1905) as a subfamily of Vae-
jovidae. The correct latinized family name derived from the type genus name Scorpiops is Scor-
piopidae (H. D. Cameron, pers. comm.), and the spelling is corrected here. The family currently
includes several Asian (mainly from South and Southeast Asia) genera, and forms a monophyletic
group which does not have any synapomorphies with the North American Vaejovidae sensu
stricto. Stockwell (1992: 411) elevated Scorpiopsinae to the family rank; we tentatively accept
this placement but believe that this change requires further justification. Lourern;o ( l 998g) con-
firmed the family status but did not provide justification.
Redescriptions and keys were published by Francke (1976b), Tikader & Bastawade (1983),
Bastawade (1985), and Kovarfk (1994a, 1995a). Vachon (1980b) published a revision of the
genus Scorpiops and divided it into four subgenera. These subgenera were recently elevated to
generic level by Louren90 (1998g).
The family includes six genera, 27 species, and four subspecies (including two nominotypi-
cal forms).
