ABSTRACT The incidence of stroke is increasing every year and the most common type is ischemic stroke. In Indonesia, North Sumatera included as one of the area with a high prevalence of stroke. Smoking habits and obesity are major risk factors that can be modified for the incidence of ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study is to find out the association between obesity and smoking habits to the incidence of ischemic stroke in Haji Adam Malik Hospital through analytical study with cross sectional design. Samples are divided into 23 people for patients suffer ischemic stroke and 23 people for non-stroke group by non-randomized consecutive sampling that matched inclusion criteria. The data obtained through observation and interview, then analyzed with the help from a computer program. Results of this study stated that there was no significant association between obesity and the incidence of ischemic stroke with p values> 0.05 (p = 0.375). Whereas in the case of smoking habits there is a significant association between smoking and the incidence of ischemic stroke with p <0.05 (p = 0.038) and also between daily cigarette consumption with the incidence of ischemic stroke with p <0.05 (p = 0.035) , But for the duration of smoking was not found a significant association with the occurrence of ischemic stroke with p <0.05 (p = 0.103). This can happen due to other risk factors that arent eliminated may cause biased towards research. However, controlling obesity and smoking habits are expected to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke events.
