Fall Awesome experience, great class
Great Job! I can hardly wait for Comp II
I learned a lot this semester and I am thankful to have had great
clinical instructors.
I really enjoyed the clinicals we did. They were a great learning
experience and really helped me to gain a foundation on which I can
now build upon!
Faculty made me excited for learning and was able to answer any
questions I had about the course and my learning objectives.
I really appreciated the weekly announcement each week that gave us
encouragement and a summary of what we had coming up. The
reminders were very helpful and kept us all up to date.
I've learned and will remember so many key lessons taught in
their class.
Extremely helpful, kind and always wanted to make sure we felt
comfortable with what we were doing and to ease our fears.
Spring Both the lab and clinical portion of this class was very good. The
objectives and information was clearly explained, and if I had
questions they were answered promptly and knowledgably.
Thoroughly enjoyed the class and learned a lot throughout the
semester. The instructors were very competent and displayed
professionalism in the lab and clinical setting.
Instructors were very helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to work with
students on both strengths and weaknesses.
Instructors were eager to teach and provide feedback to help guide
student's success. Really appreciative of the staff this semester.
Great class, enjoy how instructors relate their past experiences to the
material presented in class
Nothing but great, positive things to say about this course and the
professors

Faculty Analysis of Student Course Evaluations

Fall Overall the evaluations were positive. Appears that the students felt like the instructors worked well together and
supported the growth of the students over the course of the semester. Students appreciated the weekly
announcements with the reminders of what needed to be done and what was due. with the reminders
Spring Overall the evaluations were positive. There were some concerns at the beginning of the semester that the
staff were not friendly and did not seem to want to work with the students. This was addressed with the nurse manger
and things became significantly better. Some students at RCH felt like they did not have the opportunity to perform
some skills that other students did at MRMC due to a lower patient census. Overall the students did feel that they
learned a great deal and had a good experience.

Most of the staff were helpful in my learning process and
were actively trying to enhance my experience and provide
new opportunities for me as a student nurse.
All the nurses on my unit were so helpful to my learning,
they were always excited to work with me and teach my
new thinks. There was never a time they made me feel like I
was just in the way, they would constantly ask me
questions and what my thinking was for certain situations. I
cant thank them enough for all that they did for me and I
am so glad I got to be a part of the PCU unit for the
semester
The staff I encountered at Memorial Regional were friendly,
knowledgeable, and helpful
Very enjoyable staff at MRMC. They were eager for
students to learn and were willing to help.
Personally, I never felt connected to the nurses at this
establishment. On the brief occasion that I did, I made sure
to communicate my gratitude for their attentive and
informative nature. Countless times, lack of communication
paralleled with these feelings of unimportance. It is
completely necessary for student nurses to hear report for
their patient. Rather than being seen as a learning
opportunity, most of the time I felt like we took on the role
of a sitter. I hope for the future that the nurses here see the
importance of our constant education; talking to us about
I/O restrictions or fasting blood sugars. I have hope for their
success
Some of the staff were helpful, available and inclusive,
while others seemed like they couldn't be bothered.
Spring 73% Spring
(MRMC When we first started clinical for this semester, some of the
PCU) staff weren't as friendly or seemed too happy to have us
there. Not all but some. They weren't rude or anything it
just seemed as they talked more amongst themselves and
the patients instead of incorporating us students in
patient's needs and updates. Because of this, we would
miss out of hand off shift report or not know too much
about out patient's status. This also left us just simply
standing around, posted alongside the walls, with nothing
to do for the full day we were there. However, it appeared
that our instructor(s) might've talked to them and let them
know how us students felt in regards to the atmosphere
Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing
Annual Practicum Course Report
that had been created. Needless to say, that atmosphere
changed fast! We were starting to have nurses ask if we
wanted to listen in on report or be a part of their general
assessments for our patients. This interaction and change
was very beneficial to us. Clinical has provided me, us, with
great insight to the topics and discussions we were learning
in class. Because of clinical we are able to apply our
knowledge and become more familiar with the hospital
setting. Overall, it's been a great semester there at MRMC.
Glad to have the opportunity and I look forward to clinical
as the years progress further. THANK YOU!
The staff on MRMC PCU were all extremely generous in
helping me, and my classmates, understand each aspect of
nursing care we were building upon. It was always a friendly
and professional environment in which to learn, to practice,
and to become more acquainted with the staff and the
equipment. I'm looking forward to working with like-
minded personnel in the future.
This was a great experience! Thank you for all of your help!
I wish the staff would have helped us a little more because
most of the time I felt like they just took advantage of us
and never checked in or offered any sort of help.
In the beginning of the semester the nursing staff at the
hospital weren't that friendly, but they definitely were a
huge help towards the end of the semester. I think if staff
were more friendly from the start, students would feel a lot
more comfortable in the setting of the get go.
RCH 60% I enjoyed my experience at RCH. Even though there was not
(MedSurg) a big variety of different diagnoses and treatment of
patients I still felt that the experience was valuable.
This was a great learning experience for us as student
nurses. There were a few nurses on my unit that really liked
to teach us about different skills and aspects of nursing. I
really enjoyed these nurses and they were very helpful
throughout the learning process. Because this was a smaller
hospital some things we were not able to do at our clinical
site because of the patient population. However, as the
semester progressed, we were able to do more than we did
in our first few clinicals. I think although this was a small
hospital I still learned a lot of information from both the
staff and the patients. Overall I think it was a great learning
experience and the staff tried to incorporate us in as much
nursing care as possible. I am grateful for the experience!
I enjoyed my clinical experience at Richmond Community.
Yes, the hospital is small, and some may say that the
hospital hindered us from doing some of the things that our
peers were able to do at a different facility; however, it was
an awesome first experience. I feel that the population that
Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing
Annual Practicum Course Report
Richmond Community cares for is one that is very
important to see. Their population is specific in regards to
the area around them, and it is humbling to work with the
patients. This clinical environment was more to me than
just practicing the skills we have learned in lab. I learned
more about how to communicate with people, how to
empathize with patients and their families, and do these
things on a professional instead of personal level. I feel that
as nursing students we should be exposed to all types of
patients with all types of backgrounds. Richmond
Community did this for me, and I was very pleased with my
time there even though I did not get to do all of the
procedures that we learned in lab. Dr. Daniels was a
wonderful clinical instructor!
Great first clinical experience. Wonderful to see a
healthcare team interact and respect each other so much.
I had a very positive experience at Richmond Community.
The staff was amazing and enhanced the learning
environment greatly. It exceeded my expectations and I feel
very confident with the skills I implemented.

MRMC 100% The clinical rotations were very helpful in putting our lab
(CPC) exercises into practice. Staff were all very friendly, helpful
and easy to approach. (physicians and techs included)
I really enjoyed my time on CPC. I would suggest that the
students shadow a PCT or RN maybe one or two of the days
spent at the hospital.
Overall, an excellent rating as the staff /clinical team were
very well organized, professional, and assisted when
necessary. I could see this unit was very well equipped, and
communication with other hospital staff in various positions
worked very well together. I saw some errors with
medication as some nurses were taking out multiple meds
and not labeling them in bags when they went in patients
rooms. We were taught never to do this as this could lead
to medication errors. Overall the staff worked very well and
goal oriented to give the best care to patients.
Overall the experience with the nursing staff on this unit
was very well. They were really well with helping and
teaching new student nurses.
MRMC 88% Everyone was great on site and enhanced my learning
(GenSurg) experience.

Faculty Analysis of Practicum Sites
Please provide your expert analysis of the practicum sites used in the course considering student evaluations and your expert analysis.
Fall 2016
Survey information was not broken down between specific units. Students appeared to be satisfied with MRMC as the
clinical site. The students felt like the staff was supportive of their educational needs and were available as a resource
for the students.
PCU (Brownie) During the Fall semester one hallway of the PCU and one hallway of the CPC unit were switching. This
caused some confusion with locating patient supplies in the supply rooms. The students struggled with one nurse who
was not always receptive to having students. There were also several new employees in orientation on the unit. Overall
the nurses were willing to support the students and provide opportunities when available.
Renal (Mikelaites) The unit was undergoing a time of high stress during the Fall semester. But, I am not aware of any
negative interactions between the staff and our students. The nurses sought out opportunities and appeared to be
willing teachers. The unit did have a travel nurse who was outspoken and did not always follow proper techniques. The
students took notice of this and it provided good opportunities for conversations on professionalism and safe practice.
CPC (Swann and Liverman) Supportive staff with excellent learning opportunities

Spring 2017
Surveys were deployed differently so that students would receive the survey associated with the unit they were
assigned to.
RCH (Daniels) - I feel the overall experience went well. In reading their final evaluations they felt that we gave them a
positive learning experience. They all felt they could see their growth in competencies and patient engagement from
where they started to where they are now. The students in all sections felt that in spite of the fact that they were
unable to perform many of the clinical competencies they learned so much about a very different and complex patient
population. There were two who did not like the experience at RCH.
MRMC PCU (Brownie) The staff on the unit were still adjusting to the new arrangement of the unit done in the Fall
semester and being able to locate supplies. Staffing challenges existed while we were on the unit. We had the
opportunity to perform skills on the unit including insertion of several urinary catheters and post-mortem care. The
students felt like some of the nurses were not very receptive to students at the beginning of the semester so I reached
out to the Nurse Manager and this improved throughout the rest of the semester. Overall I feel the students had
excellent learning opportunities while working with the patients and staff on the PCU.
MRMC GenSurg (Liverman) The staff on the unit were helpful and supportive of the students. The patient population
on the unit was difficult for the students to care for since many of the patients were pre or post-surgery and did not
need assistance with basic care needs and feeding.
MRMC CPC (Swann) Staff on the unit were supportive and helpful with the students. Excellent learning opportunities.
