When

I was in his cabin he told me, with a smile on his face, the happiness he felt at the arrival of the
French. I saw that one of his wives wore a pearl necklace. I presented her with ten yards of blue glass beads
in exchange for it. I carried it to La Salle and told him that the chief intended to visit him the next day - which
he did. He would not have done this for savages (natives), but because he hoped to get some goods from the
natives he agreed to meet the chief. He came the next day with wooden canoes. La Salle presented the
chief with presents and they gave us, in return, plenty of supplies and some of their robes. The chiefs
returned well satisfied.
