“The finished weld shall be examined’and shall meet
the acceptance requirements of Appendix 6 or Appendix
8 of this Division. Radiographic examination, if required
by UW-I1(a), and additional inspections, if required
by the material specification, shall be performed.
‘This weld is a bur weld, but it is not categorized
It shall not be considered in establishing the joint
efficiency of any part of the head or of the head-to-
shell weld.
uw.3§ FINISHED LONGITUDINAL AND
CIRCUMFERENTIAL JOINTS
(@) Bust welded joints shall have complete penetration
‘and fill fusion, As-welded surfaces aze permitted; how~
ever, the surface of welds shall be sufficiently free
from coarse ripples, grooves, overlaps, and abrupt ridges
and valleys to permit proper interpretation of radio-
‘graphic and other required nondestructive examinations
If there is a question regarding the surface condition
of the weld when interpreting a radiographic film, the
film shall be compared to the actual weld surface for
determination of acceptability.
() A reduction in thickness. due to the welding
process is_ acceptable providedall_ of. the following
(i) The reduction in thickness shall not reduce the
raterial of the adjoining surfaces below the minimum
required thickness at any point.
(2) The reduction in thickness shall not exceed
Yq in (0.8 mam) oF 10% of the nominal thickness of
the adjoining surface, whichever is less*
(o) When a single-welded butt joint is made by using
a backing stip which is let in place [Type No. (2)
of Table UW-12], the requitement for reinforcement
applies only to the side opposite the ‘backing strip.

FILLET WELDS
In making ‘let welds, the weld metal shall be
deposited in such a way that adequate penetration into
the base metal at the root of the weld is secured. The
reduction of the thickness of the base metal due to
the welding process at the edges of tho filet weld
shall meet the same requirements as for butt welds
[see UW-35(b)}.
Uw.37 MISCELLANEOUS WELDING
REQUIREMENTS
(a) The reverse side of double-welded joints shall
be prepared by chipping, grinding, or melting out, so
fas to secure sound metal at the base of weld metal
fst deposited, before applying weld metal from the
reverse side
{) The requirements in (a) above are not intended
to apply to any process of welding by which proper
fusion and penetration arc, otherwise obtained and by
which the base of the weld remains free from defects.
(c) If the welding is stopped for any reason, extra
care shall be taken in restarting to get the required
penetration and fusion. For submerged arc welding,
chipping out a groove in the erater is recommended.
{d) Where single-welded joints are used, particular
care shall be taken in aligning and separating the
