Introduction

Non communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases,

tend to be of long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic,
physiological, environmental and behaviours factors. Non communicable
diseases remain the major concern of the public.

To lessen the impact of NCDs on individuals and society, a

comprehensive approach is needed to work together to reduce the risks
associated with NCDs, and promote interventions to prevent and control
them. Management of NCDs includes detecting, screening and treating
these diseases, and providing access to palliative care for people in need.
High impact essential NCD interventions can be delivered through a primary
health care approach like health education to strengthen early detection
and timely treatment. If provided early to patients, they can reduce the
need for more expensive treatment.

We have a total of 404 cumulative cases of hypertension, 22 cases of

diabetes mellitus, 3 COPD and 1 case of cancer in Sta Teresita. As of the
month of August we have 150 hypertensive patient and 9 diabetic patients
who were monitored and managed. Upon profiling we encounter 68 patients
of hypertension.

As part of the primary health care approach, I conduct health

education about non communicable diseases particularly on hypertension
and diabetes mellitus on some barangays which participated by 40
participants. We start the activity by an opening prayer followed by
introduction. We begin in discussing non communicable diseases and
making sure that the participants absorbed learnings and exercised what
they learn to prevent and control non communicable diseases. As an
evaluation we let them verbalized their understanding and allow them to ask
questions and encourage doing healthy lifestyle. It was a great time and
productive day to all of us that we divulge our learnings to community and
being thank by showing interest and sweet smile came from our participants.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Issues and Concern:

There were some patients who are taking their maintenance but once
their BP became stable they abruptly stop taking maintenance without
doctors advised
There were some patients with blood pressure of more than 130/80 who
dont want consult physician.

Actions taken:
Health educations were given to every patient and inform about the
availability of medicines in the RHU.
Encourage patients to consult a doctor and dont get afraid of the
result because its on their own sake and can be managed and
control.
