There were many imporeant differences between, let us say, Horace's Art of Poetry and the criticism of Dr. Johnson, but there was also a discernible continuity in premises, aims, and methods. This continuity was broken by the theories of| romantic writers, English and German; and thir innovations include many of the points of view and procedures which make the characteristic difer- ences between traditional criticism and the criticism of our own time, in- cluding some criticism which professes to be anti-romantic, ‘The primary concern of this book is with the English theory of poety, and to a lesser extent of the other major ents, daring the frst four decades of the nineteenth century. It stresses the common orientation which justifies us in identifying a specifically ‘romantic’ criticisms bur net, T trust, at the cost of overlooking the many important diversities among the writers who concerned themselves with the nature of poetry or art, its psychologieal genesis its constitution and kinds, its major criteria, and its relation to other Jmporant human concerns. The book deals, for the most part, with the criginal and enduring erties of the time, rather than with the run-of-ke- rill reviewers who often had a more immediate, chough shorterlived in- fluence on the general reading public In order to emphasize the pivotal position of the age in the general history of eriticism, I have treated English romantic theory in a broad intellectual context, and I have tied to Keep constantly in view the background of cightezath-century aesthetics from which romantic aesthetics wat in part a development, and against which it was, still more, a deliberate reaction, T have described some of the selations of English critical theory to foreign thought, especially to the richly suggestive German speculations of the age, beginning with Herder and Kent, when Germany replaced England and France 26 the chief exporter of idess to the Western world, I have alo moved freely in time, going back to the Greek and Roman origins of aes- thetic thought and ahead to various ritcal ideas curcent today. Finally, I have undertaken, although brely, o trace the origins of prominent roman- tic ideas, not only in earlier aesthetic discussion, but also in philosophy, tcthies, theology, and in the theories and discoveries of the natural sciences. In aesthetics, 26 in other provinces of inquiry, radial novelties frequently turn out to be migrant ideas whieh, in their native intellectual habitat, were commonplaces. ‘The tile ofthe book identifies two common and antihetic metaphors of rmind, one compating the mind to a reflector of external ebjers, the other toa radiane projector which makes a eontribution to the objects it perceives, “The firs ofthese was characteristic of much of the thinking from Plato 0 the eighteenth century; the second typifies the prevailing romantic concep- tion of the poetic mind. T have attempted the experiment of taking these tnd various other metaphors no less seriously when they oteur in ertcsm than when they oceur in poetry; for in both provinces the recourse to meta- phos, although directed to different ends, is pechaps equally functional Ceitical thinking, like that in all areas of human interest, has been in con- siderable pare thinking in parallels, and critical argument has to that extent been an argument from analogy. As this inquiry will indicate, a number of concepts mest rewarding in clarifying the nature and criteria of art were fot found simply in che examination of aesthetic fact, but seem to have merged ftom the exploration of serviceable analogues, whose properties ivere, by metaphorical transfer, predicated of a work of art, From this point of view che shift from neo-leeie to romantic criticism can be formulated, in & preliminary way, as a radical akeration in the typical metaphors of critical discourse ‘The bringing of submerged analogies into the open puts certain old facts ino a new ands it sem to me, a revealing perspective. There are, however, many profitable ways to approsch the history of crtcism. I have tried to use whatever ways seemed most pertinent, and 0 restrict the analysis of basic metaphors to problems in which this approach promised genuine illumination. “This book had its disane origin in a study of the writings of Johnson and Coleridge, under the stimulating direction of 1. A. Richards at Cambridge University, and it was developed at Harvard University with the guidance and cacouragement of my mentor and friend, the late Theodore Spencer. "The diversity of aesthetic theories, however, makes the task ofthe historian 1 very dificule one. It is not only that answers to such questions as “Whet is art? of “What is poetry? disagree. The fact is that many theories of act cannot readily be compared at all, because they lack a common ground on which to meet and clash, They seem incommensurable because sated in diverse terms, or in identical terms with diverse signification, or because they are an integral pat of larger systems of thought which differ in assamp- tions and procedure. As a result itis hard to find where they agree, where disagree, or even, what the points at issue are. ‘Our fire need, then, is to find a frame of reference simple enough to be readily manageable, yet exible enough so that, without undue violence t0 any one set of statements about art it will translate as many sets as posible conto a single plane of discourse, Most writers bold enough to undertake the history of aesthetic theory have achieved this end by silently translating the basic terms ofall theories into their own favorite philosophical vocabulary, bue this procedure unduly distorts its subject mater, and merely rulkplies the complications to be unraveled. The more promising method is to adopt 6 COmTeNTATION OF CRITICAL, THORES an analyz scheme which avoids imposing its own philosophy, by utilizing thove Key distinctions which are already common to the largest posible number ofthe theories to be compared, and then to apply the scheme warily, fa constant readiness to introduce such further citinctions as seem to be needed for the purpose in hand. i. Some Co-ordinates of Art Criticism Four elements in the total situation of a work of art are diseriminated and made salient, by one or another syeonyrn, in almost all theories which aim to be comprehensive. Firs, there is the work, the artistic product itself. ‘And since this is a human product, an artifact, the second common element js the artifice, the artist Third, the work is taken to have'a subject which, diealy or devious, is derived from existing thinge—to be about, or signify, fr reflect something which ether is or bears some relation to, an objective state of affairs. This third element, whether held to consist of people and fictions, ideas and feelings, material things and events, or super-sensible ex ences, has frequently been denoted by that wordofal-work, ‘nature’; but fer us use the more neutral and comprehensive term, universe, instead. Application of this analytic scheme, therefore, will sort attempts to explain the nature soME cO-ORDIMATES OF ARE cRITIIBME 7 and worth of & work of art inte four broad clases. Three will explain the work of art principally by relating it to another thing: the universe, the au ence, or the artist. The fourth will explain the work by considering it i io- lation, 28 an autonomous whole, whose significance and value are determined without any reference beyond inet, “To find the major orientation of a critical theory, however, is only the beginning of an adequate analysis. For one thing, these four coordinates are rot constants, but variables; they difler in significance according to the theory in which they occur. Take whet I have called the wniverse as an ex- ample. In any one theory, the aspects of nature which an artist is said to imitate, or isexhorted to imitate, may be either particulars or types, and they may be only the beautiful or the moral aspects of the world or else any aspect without discrimination, It may be maintained that the artists world js that of imaginative intuition, or of common sense, or of natural scence; and this woild may be held to include, or not to include, gods, witches, chimeras, and Platonic Idess. Consequently, theories which agree in asign- ing to the represented universe the primary control over a legitimate work of art may vary from recommending the most uncompromising realism to the most remote idealism, Each of our other terms as we shall ste, also varies, both in meaning and functioning, according to the critical theory in which it oocus, the method of reasoning which che theorise characterstically ties, and the explicit or implicit ‘world-view’ of which these theories are ‘an integral part ‘Ee would be possible of course, to devise more complex methods of analysis which, even in a preliminary elasifiation, would make more subtle dir tinctions? By mukiplying dfferentiae, however, we sharpen our capacity to discriminate at the expense both of easy manageability and the ability to rake broad inital generalizations. For eur historical purpose, the scheme have proposed has this imporcan virtue, that it will enable us to bring out the one essential arribute which most early ninetcenth-eentury theories had in common: the persistent recourse to the poet to explain the nature and criteria of poetry. Historians have recently been instructed to speak only of ‘romanticisms; in the plural, but from our point of vantage there turns out to be one distinctively romantic criticism, although this remains @ unity amid vatiery. 8 omENTATION OF cant THEORIES Mimetic Theories “The mimetic oriatation~the explanation of at as essentially an imitation of aspects of the universe—was probably the most primitive aesthetic theory, ‘but mimesis is no simple concept by the time it makes its first recorded ap- pearance in the dialogues of Plato, The arts of painting, poetry, music, dance ing, and sculpture, Socrates says, are all imitations ‘Imitation’ is a rela- tional term, signifying two items and some correspondence between them. Bur although in many later mimetic theories everything is comprehended in two categorie, che imitable and the imitation, the philosopher in the Platonic Aialogues characteristcally operates with three categories, The first category is that ofthe eternal and unchanging Ideas; the second, reflecting this is the ‘world of sense, natural or artificial; and the thied eategory, in turn reflecting the second, comprises such things as shadows, images in water and mirsors, and the fine ats ‘Around this threestage rogeess—complicated still further by various sup- plementary distinctions, a= well as by his exploitation of the polysemism of his key terms—Plato weaves his dazzling diatectic* But from the shifting arguments emerges a recurrent pattern, exemplifed in the famous pastage in the tenth book of the Republic. In discussing the nature of art, Socrates rakes the point that there ace three beds: the Idea which ‘is the exence of the bed’ and is made by God, the bed made by the carpenter, and the bed found in a painting. How shall we describe che painter of this third bed? T think, he said, that we may fay designate him as the imitator of that which the others make, Good, I sid; then yo cll him wh imitate? ‘Cerny, he sid, ‘And the tragic poct is an imvkator, and therefore, like all other imitators, he fs trie removed from the king and ftom the trth? ‘That appears to be soe third in the desent from nature on From the intial postion that art imitates the world of appearance and aot of Essence, it fellows that works of arc have a lowly statu inthe order of existing things. On these grounds, the poct is inescapably the competitor of the artisan, the lawmaker, and the moral; indeed, any one cof these can be regarded as bimsclf the truer poet, succesfully achieving that imitation of the Ideas which the traditional poet atempts under conditions dooming him to failure. Thus the lawmaker is able to reply to the posts seeking admission to his city, ‘Best of srangers— ‘we aso according to our ability are tagie poets and our tragedy is the best and cblest; for our whole state isan imitation ofthe best and nobles life, which we firm tobe indeed the very trth of tragedy. But the difference between the way the term ‘imitation’ fonctions in Aristotle and in Plato distinguishes radically thc consideration of art.
