COMPARISON BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE OF DENTAL HYGIENE AND CARIES

PREVENTION AFTER COUNSELING BY USING AUDI0-VISUAL MEDIA AND

LEAFLETS ON 4-5 GRADES CHILDREN OF SDN 1 NEGERI KATON YEAR 2016

Abstract

Backgrounds: To achieve a healthy Indonesia program, it is necessary to increase personal

hygiene at an early age at first child. So health problems in children of primary school age can be

minimized. One of health problem frequently encountered is the incidence of dental caries.

Dental caries is a hard dent tissue damage chronically caused by the activity of microorganisms.

This situation often occurs in children of primary school age because children tend to like sweet

foods and drinks and kids less to keep their teeth. The problem occurs because of a lack of

knowledge of the children about the importance of dental hygiene and prevention of dental

caries. So an effective method of doing counseling to children is needed.

Aims: the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of counseling on dental hygiene

and prevention of dental caries by using counseling between audio visual media and leaflets. So,

later it can be a material consideration for health professionals in providing information to make

it more effective.

Methods: This research used quantitative methods with Quasi Experiment Nonequivalent

Control Group Design study by using pretest and posttest questionnaires on control group as

instruments. Samples that used in this study were students in grades 4-5 elementary school 1 of

Negri Katon Margatiga, East Lampung in 2016 as many as 84 students from overall population is

93. Samples were divided into two groups that consist of 42 students that using audio-visual

media and 42 students with leaflets.
