Street harassment though, is the everyday reality for women all over this world that

needs to be taken seriously. Although men are also victims, forms of sexual
advancement such as catcalling disproportionately affects women and it can have
significant impacts on their mental health, self-esteem and feelings of safety as well as
feeding into a culture of normalized sexism where a harmless jeer opens up a gateway
to violence, sexual aggression and systematic oppression.

According to Laura Newcomer public sexual harassment occurs on a continuum starting with
words, stalking, and unwanted touching which can lead to more violent crimes
(Newcomer). Some facts to support this idea are: targets of street harassment have heightened
fears of rape; 80-99% of women report being targets of aggressive unwanted attention from
men; and sexual harassment and objectification in general are often associated with an increase
in depression (Newcomer). Newcomer proves that street harassment oppresses many women
and that street harassment is just a beginning for further sexual harassment.
