Fingerprint recognition is one of the prominent methods having high degree of
accuracy in the identification process. Minutiae, is one of the versatile
characteristic of the fingerprint where the curve track ends, bisects or branches off.
In this work the image enhancement technique is used for fingerprint recognition,
which is the combination of Gabor Filter and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The
proposed technique involves Frequency Domain Filtering and Gabor Filter for
enhancing the image. With sixteen different orientations of the Gabor Filter,
characteristics of the fingerprint extracted are combined. The fingerprint

subdivided into 64*64 small frames in Frequency domain filtering. From these
frames the features are extracted in frequency domain. By the combination of
results obtained from both, the Gabor Filter and Frequency Domain Filtering the
final enhanced fingerprint is obtained. Finally the enhanced fingerprint undergoes
Binarization and Thinning where it is converted into binary image of 0's and 1's
and ridges are reduced to single pixel thickness. Minutiae parts are obtained from
this process which helps for recognition. The proposed method recognition rate is
90% which is far better than Histogram process whose recognition rate is 64%.
MATLAB is the platform for this project implementation.
