Future Vertical City

Coonley 4th Grade Design Challenge

At the Chicago Biennial we visited the

exhibit Vertical City. The idea is to create
the city was a vertical structure. Tatiana
Bilbao Estudios tower, 15 different
designers build parts of the tower. Each
designer thought about what the city needs
and how it should connect to the other
parts of the city. Then the individual pieces
were put together to create a whole.

Design Challenge: The 4th grade is going to build a future vertical
city:
The city needs to have all the elements that a city needs.
The pieces need to work together.
Every 4th grader needs to design a piece of the vertical city.
A leadership teams needs to determine how to put all the pieces
together to create a city that works.

What would make our city a more vibrant and delightful place to live?

4. There are many things are city needs. Each student is responsible
for building a piece of the city. What is a fair process for deciding
who will build what?
 Your Design
You have a (6 by 6) piece of foam core that you will build
your piece of the city on. All the pieces will be attached to
a cardboard structure to create a vertical city.
In addition you need to create a page for the class book
about the vertical city. This page will have a picture of your
part of the city and three paragraphs explaining why it is
important to the city. (Paragraph 1 - detailed description of
your piece of the city; paragraph 2 - detailed explanation of
why your piece is essential to the city; paragraph 3 -
explain how all the parts of the city work together to create
a functioning whole.) The page will be typed on Google
Docs and shared with your teacher.

Answer the questions on a Google Doc and complete the

design sheet with details, and then you will be given your
foam core piece to begin building.
