Context With a population on the rise, the city of Sydney is facing road traffic
congestion issues. In response to the local needs, Alstom, as part of
the ALTRAC consortium, will provide a full-turnkey light rail system
which will improve access to two major parts of the city: the Central
Business District and the South Eastern suburbs. This new light rail
system will revitalize George Street, the city's main artery and offer
reliable journeys to the citys sporting, entertainment and medical
precincts. The light rail vehicles will have a capacity of 450
passengers per service, the equivalent to nine buses. The new line
will respond to the growing needs of Sydney in terms of public

tramway system features Alstoms APS
solution, powering vehicles at ground
level and allowing safe catenaryless
operation to preserve the city landscape
through Sydneys CBD.
A light rail vehicle specifically tailored
to the customers needs with low-floor
design, multiple vehicle configurations
and high-end passenger comfort
especially during heatwave.
Solution.. Alstom is responsible for the system engineering, overall integration
between systems and civil works, design, supply, construction, tests
and commissioning of 60 Citadis vehicles, electrification (APS
catenary-free technology), power supply equipment including the
energy recovery system HESOP, signalling and depot (design and
equipment). The benefits of this system-based solution include
reduced energy consumption and an easier sub-system integration
and maintenance, which decrease lifecycle costs.
The new line will be integrated to the existing Inner West Light Rail
(IWLR) line. Alstom is also responsible for the maintenance of the
full system (infrastructure & rolling stock) for 19 years on the
existing IWLR line comprising 12 CAF vehicles and for 15 years on
the new CSELR line. The 1.4 billion project is financed through a
public-private partnership (PPP).
