Artificial Lighting

First work: study of shadows of a plant.

Second work: Analyse of artificial lighting in Bucharest.

1
Introduction:

I chose to work on a plant because the shades of leaves are interesting to study about their shapes and their use
in architecture.

I chose to work about outside artificial lightings in Bucharest because there are really different depending of the
place you are. Lights in the centre, in park, or in suburbs, in street, in shops, for historical building and hotel…

First work: study of shadows of a plant.

I study that plant depending of different factor: orientation, distance, above, behind, near, far. With one, two or
tree light.
I was able to identify quality of theses shadows: shape, opacity – lighting, sized.

2
1) From in front:

I took 3 points light at 1

meter to make this first
study.

From 2 meters of the plant

to 20 centimetres from it.

We can easily see by the

progression of this light
that the shadow is at the
first step small and opaque,
but in front of it, the
shadow become bigger and
blurred.

We can understand by this hand-drawing that

The shadow is more opaque in the centre part
(the blue one) and become blurred when there
is only one superposition.

3
2) From in front 2 m high:

I took 3 points light at 2

meters to make this second
study.

Here the shadow is

concentrated on the floor
and become less opaque
when you approach the
plant with the light.

The size stay more or less

the same.

By this scheme, we can discover that a smaller

part is always in shadow than the first study.

Also at the last one (the red one), the shadow

become bigger and tight.

4
3) From the ground:

I took 3 points light on the

ground to make this third
study.

Like always the shadow

begin less opaque when
you approach the light from
the plant.

But the size of this one

grows up to two or three
time the size of the plant.

In this example we can observe that the shadow

is evaluating rapidly. There are no three
superpositions.

This is interesting that you can amplify the idea

of an object with this king of position light.

5
4) From Above:

I took in the first image a single light from above and three light in the second one.

The difference between theses two pictures are really interesting because de first one give direct and strong
shadow on the ground but in second one, leafs nearest of the ground give stronger shadow than the others.
The blackest parts are the superposition of several shadows.

5) Direct light and diffuse light:

6
This one is interesting because you can
identify the opacity of the shadow.

The direct light gives a stronger shadow

than the diffuse one.

This difference is interesting to light for

example parts of a restaurant in pointing
the light in an opposite direction.

The direct light are usually use to make thinks

important!

The diffuse one is used to give less shadow or

any shadow for par example painting or working
for architecture.
This king of light is like the north light of the sun.

6) Conclusion:

7
Theses shapes were really interesting for me to study because I was able to understand the different opacity of
them.
But really the most interesting and the raison why I study this plant and not a common object is the utilisation that
I can use in architecture, I mean the utilisation for a roof, a facade or the interior ambiances.

The superposition of shadow given by artificial lighting are useful to play with, I mean with a intelligent
architectural project It could be interesting to use shadows of artificial lighting to set function in a building!

You can take the example of Olympic stage of Pekin. The structure is a natural shape. The sun, artificial lighting
and colours are used to make ambiances inside of the stage and also for it itself beauty.

« Le « design » du futur stade de Beijing a été inspiré par l’entrecroisement des

brindilles d’un nid d’oiseau.

L’armature du futur stade sera en faite une sorte de coquille transparente permettant
à des faisceaux de lumière de se réfléchir à l’extérieur. »

Herzog et De Meuron

Natural light are able to come inside thought theses steal beam to
make some ambiances but also during the night, the artificial lights
with colours or not are reflected outside to give the idea of what
going on inside!

Second work: Analyse of artificial lighting in Bucharest.

8
I wanted to study theses lightings to understand better how composed big cities are, if the
streets view composed of artificial lighting are ordered or completely chaotic and to
understand the lecture of a view.

Because most of buildings are thinking for themselves, I mean how you can make it
beautiful for people who walk on the street. But are they thinking about others artificial
lighting on the street like public lamps or even lighten road sign?

First part: In the centre of Bucharest: From Boulvardul Magheru to piata unirii.
This part is composed by the biggest expression of artificial lighting.

In calea Victoriei

This one is interesting by the break of the illumination of the facade,

you have no idea of what going on that un-illumined building; you can
easily believe that it don’t have function or may be it’s completely
empty above the ground floor.
Note: Here the publics lighting are not important in the lecture of this
image.

9
From a fountain in piata unirii

This one is interesting by the deep of the picture: first of

all you can see the advertising lighting panel above the
communist building and after your attention is drawn by
the illumination of “casa poporului” and at the end by the
reflexion of lights in water.

Artificial lightings are also used to illuminate big

advertising.

From a bridge of piata unirii

This one is interesting by the function of theses lights. The

first attraction is the little public light along the water
which show you the way to the walking direction. In a
second time you can notice the lighting of the building on
the left to give valour to the facade.
But also, there are several biggest road lights which give
you the direction of the road.

The reflexion on the water here is also interesting and

beautiful for the picture by the assembly of lights which
become more difficult to identify.

10
Second part: Little streets / smaller lighting

In calea Victoriei

This picture is directed toward piata victoriei. We are

leaving the centre and we can see that building here don’t
have lighting and the public lighting is only singles lamps
spaced by 50 meters but you can follow the shape of the
road with them. The light on the ground floor are
interesting because they give a better light, a white one
which you can see easily the sidewalk.

Note: road light are orange because there are cheaper;

they only give a diffuse light. This is better than a white
one because the cars have also lights, and I think too
much strong light will dazzle the driver.

Note2: I know that a camera with a flash increase the

orange effect of a light.

In calea Luterana

This one is interesting because this road lead to a square

with the sala palatului which is illuminated and just above
it you can see the top light of the hotel Radisson.
Note: In this one there are some lighted indicators of
function like small shops.

11
Third part: Some interesting artificial lighting.

Theses king of lighting are interesting by theirs uses. But some of them are a little crazy.

Like covert by snow.

Or too much type of light during the Christmas time in Bulvardul Magheru.

12
Some of light are attractive but may be a little bit too much
for a simple fast food shop.

Some of them are also less expressive like the green one
for the Jazz-Bar

Conclusion:

I choose to study the city by night more than work on a designer or an utilisation of artificial lighting on a building
because lights on the city is for me the first use of lighting. The streets are the first place to meet someone and
have connexion with our environment and lights on them are the first helper.
Moreover, lights can give sensitive direction (road lights), identified a building or simply identify a function.

Note: In a city like Bucharest the car lights are also really interesting to take in account because there are the
most directly seen by people on the street.
