Introduction:
I chose to work on a plant because the shades of leaves are interesting to study about their shapes and their use
in architecture.
I chose to work about outside artificial lightings in Bucharest because there are really different depending of the
place you are. Lights in the centre, in park, or in suburbs, in street, in shops, for historical building and hotel…
I study that plant depending of different factor: orientation, distance, above, behind, near, far. With one, two or
tree light.
I was able to identify quality of theses shadows: shape, opacity – lighting, sized.

1) From in front:

2) From in front 2 m high:

3) From the ground:

4) From Above:
I took in the first image a single light from above and three light in the second one.
The difference between theses two pictures are really interesting because de first one give direct and strong
shadow on the ground but in second one, leafs nearest of the ground give stronger shadow than the others.
The blackest parts are the superposition of several shadows.
6
This one is interesting because you can
identify the opacity of the shadow.
6) Conclusion:

Theses shapes were really interesting for me to study because I was able to understand the different opacity of
them.
But really the most interesting and the raison why I study this plant and not a common object is the utilisation that
I can use in architecture, I mean the utilisation for a roof, a facade or the interior ambiances.
The superposition of shadow given by artificial lighting are useful to play with, I mean with a intelligent
architectural project It could be interesting to use shadows of artificial lighting to set function in a building!
You can take the example of Olympic stage of Pekin. The structure is a natural shape. The sun, artificial lighting
and colours are used to make ambiances inside of the stage and also for it itself beauty.
L’armature du futur stade sera en faite une sorte de coquille transparente permettant
à des faisceaux de lumière de se réfléchir à l’extérieur. »
Herzog et De Meuron
Natural light are able to come inside thought theses steal beam to
make some ambiances but also during the night, the artificial lights
with colours or not are reflected outside to give the idea of what
going on inside!

I wanted to study theses lightings to understand better how composed big cities are, if the
streets view composed of artificial lighting are ordered or completely chaotic and to
understand the lecture of a view.
Because most of buildings are thinking for themselves, I mean how you can make it
beautiful for people who walk on the street. But are they thinking about others artificial
lighting on the street like public lamps or even lighten road sign?
First part: In the centre of Bucharest: From Boulvardul Magheru to piata unirii.
This part is composed by the biggest expression of artificial lighting.
In calea Victoriei
9
From a fountain in piata unirii
10
Second part: Little streets / smaller lighting
In calea Victoriei
In calea Luterana
11
Third part: Some interesting artificial lighting.
Theses king of lighting are interesting by theirs uses. But some of them are a little crazy.
Or too much type of light during the Christmas time in Bulvardul Magheru.
12
Some of light are attractive but may be a little bit too much
for a simple fast food shop.
Some of them are also less expressive like the green one
for the Jazz-Bar
Conclusion:
I choose to study the city by night more than work on a designer or an utilisation of artificial lighting on a building
because lights on the city is for me the first use of lighting. The streets are the first place to meet someone and
have connexion with our environment and lights on them are the first helper.
Moreover, lights can give sensitive direction (road lights), identified a building or simply identify a function.
Note: In a city like Bucharest the car lights are also really interesting to take in account because there are the
most directly seen by people on the street.
