CAPSTONE-FIVE YEAR PLAN 2

Abstract

The following is a detailed five-year professional development plan. I layout my goals over the

course of five years and I give rationale for each goal. I also include the specific programs and a

timeline of my five- year plan.

CAPSTONE-FIVE YEAR PLAN 3

Capstone-Five Year Plan

In order to become a better teaching and to improve my craft, I will create a five-year

plan that will outline my goals to become a more effective teacher. After reflecting on my own

teaching over the past three years, there are several areas that I would like to improve. According

to Costantino and De Lorenzo (2009), The intent of reflection is to develop ongoing awareness

of a teachers own thoughts, feelings, teaching decisions, and learner reactions (p. 56). My two

main goals are to be a Reading Strategist and a STEAM advocate. My first goal is to receive my

Reading Strategist endorsement and my four other goals coincide with developing my STEAM

instruction.

First Goal

The first thing I would like to accomplish, and my first goal, is to receive my Reading

Strategist endorsement. When I was hired three years ago at my current school, I was mentored

by our Reading Strategist, Mrs. Percell. I was new to teaching reading and working with Daily 5.

I learned a great deal from her and she is the reason that my first year was successful. Watching

her model a phonics lesson or a small group strategy lesson, I was always in awe of her talent. I

had such a positive experience with her and I admired her ease of introducing a lesson that I

knew I wanted to work my way to be a Reading Strategist. My goal is to enter the program in

2018 and complete it by 2019.

Second Goal1

After receiving my reading endorsement, I would like to receive my TESOL certification. I

currently work at a Title I school in a high Hispanic population. Receiving my TESOL

certification, would give me the training and learning experience to better work with our

Hispanic community. I believe it would be huge advantage to be certified to work with ELL

students and to administer the WIDA assessment.

Third Goal. My third goal is to enter the technology program through Touro University.

I would love to learn new ways to use technology in the classroom. My third graders are very

tech savvy and I feel like I am behind in the times. Also, our school is now a STEAM school and

I believe new ideas for the use of technology will better help with my STEAM instruction.

Hopefully, in the next month our students will also have 1:1 Chromebooks. The technology

program will not only help with my own technology skills, but it will also help with setting my

students up with the correct computer instruction.

Fourth Goal. My fourth goal is to enter the Humanities program also through Touro

University. A respected colleague informed me of the program. Since our school is now STEAM,

I feel it is important that I am well versed in the arts. The STEAM curriculum involves analyzing

paintings, examining famous musicians, and eventually putting on a play. I feel the Humanities

program will help me become more familiar with all of the arts.

Fifth Goal. In order to further my STEAM instruction and knowledge, my final goal is to

take trainings and workshops on STEAM. The DRI (Desert Research Institute) Science Alive

offers continuous trainings and workshops throughout Nevada. I would like to know more about

STEAM and I would love to see experts demonstrate different activities. In the future, I would

love to be a STEAM advocate.
