EVANGELISTA A PHILOSOPHY DEFINITION 2

A Philosophy Definition

Philosophy bakes no bread, meaning that Philosophy has no practical relevance or

value to actual affairs of this world. (Pecorino, 2000) Pecorino (2000) mentioned if not for the

Philosophy little bread would be baked, for bakers need reasons, motives and purposes in lives.

The complexity of the world we live is the result of the practice of philosophy. This paper will

help us understand the basic of philosophy.

Aristotle thought that Philosophy begins in wonder. (Pecorino, 2000) Philosophy means

the study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life. In addition, it is a set

of ideas about how to do something or how to live (Merriam-Webster). Rand, A. (2010) defined

philosophy studies the fundamental nature of existence, of man and of mans relationship to

existence. (as cited by Thomas, R. 2010). Contrary to Pecorino (2000) mentioned that

philosophy is not a Way of life, because every person does not have his or her own

Philosophy. Furthermore, in the hustle and bustle in the world we live in and in the

advancement of technology, people no longer inquisitive on what is happening around us.

Curiosity, critical analysis and seeking for the truth are no longer observed. However,

philosophy plays an important role in our life. A person should never stop in seeking for an

answer; passion in seeking for truth will improve the life of the person. The scientist, before they

become scientist they are first philosopher, for they are looking for an answer. Though the

difference between the philosopher and scientist, philosopher will seek answer base on their own

perspective, on the other hand, the latter will seek answer base on experiment.

Philosophy is an academic discipline that exercises reason and continuous pursuit for

knowledge. In addition it is a motion of thought and ideas, which may become a way of life, for

a person, may not be aware or aware they keep looking for an answer.
