DATOS Y MODULACIN.

Power Connections
Pin 49 and, on be PCI-DIO-96 and PXI-650S, pin 99 ofthe I/O connector
supply +5 V from the computer's power supply va a self-resetting fuse.
The fuse wU reset automatcaly wthin a few seconds after the overcurrent
condition s removed. These pns are referenced to GND and can be used
to power external digital circutry.
Power rating 1 A at +4.65 lo +5.25 Y
yj\n Under no circumstances should you connect these +5 Vpawer plns directly to
' ' ground or to any other voltage source onyour DIO board or any other device.
Doing so can damageyour DfO board and the computer, National Instruments s
,vor Hable for damage rcsungfrom such a connection.
On the PCI-DIO-96, all of tbe 100 kO. bias resistors pul up. Therefore, tbe
defautt power-up state of each Hne on tbe PCI-DIO-96 is bigh.
On the PXI-650S and PCI-6503, you can select the drection ofthe 100 kf
bias resistors. Set jumper Wl to hgh to configure the resistors as pull-up
resistors. Set jumper "Wl to low to configure the resistors as pull-down
resstors.
You can change individual Ires from pulled up to pulled down-or, on the
PXI-6508 and PCI-6503, firom pulled down to pulled upby addng your
own external resistors. This section describes the procedure.
However, malee sure the resistor's valu is not so large tbat leakage current
from tbe DIO Une along with the current from the 100 IcQ pull-up resistor
drives the voltage at the resistor above a TTL low level of 0.4 VDC.

Figure 3-6. DIO Channel Configuredfor High DIO Power-up State with External Load
Exampe:
By default, all DIO lnes are pulled high at power up. To pul one channel
low, follow these steps:
1. Install a load (RL). Remember that the smaller the resistance, the
greater the current consumption and the lower the voltage.
2. Using the following formula, calclate the largest possible load to
maintan a logic low level of 0.4 V and supply the mximum driving
current:
y = I * RL => RL = Y/I, where:
Y = 0.4 V ; Yoltage across RL
I = 46 lA + 10 |JA ; 4.6 V across the 100 kl pull-up resistor
and 10 [iA mximum leakage current "
(except lines PCO and PC3)
Therefore:
; 0.4 Y/56 |iA
This resistor valu, 7.1 k2, provides a mximum of 0.4 Y on the DIO line
ai power up. You can substitute smaller resistor vales to lower the voltage
or to provide a margin for Y^ variations and other factors. However,
smaller vales will draw more current, leaving less drive current for other
circuitry connected o thls ne. The 7.1 kn resistor reduces (he amount of
logic high source current by 0.4 mA with a 2.8 Y output.
Also, make sure the pull-up resistor valu is not so large that leakage
current from the DIO Une along with the current &om the 100 kQ
pull-do\vn resistor brings the voltage at the resistor below a TTX bigh level
of 2.8 VDC.
DIO Board
Figure 3-7. DIO Channel Configured for Low DiO Pbwer-up State wih Externa! Load
Bxample:
Setjumper Wl to low, whch means all DIO lines are pulled low at power
up. Ifyou want to pul one channel high, follow these steps:
1. Install a load (RL). Remember that the smaller the resistance, the
greater the current consumption and the higher the voltage.
2. Using the following formula, calclate the largest possible load to
maintain a logic high level of 2.8 V and supply the mximum sink
current:
V = I * RL => RL = V/I, where:
= 2.2 V ; Voltage across RL
= 2SuA+10jlA ; 2.8 V across the 100 ki pull-up resistor
and 10 jiA mximum leakage current
(except lines PCO and PC3)
Therefore:
;2.2V/3SiA
This resistor valu, 5.7 kfi, provides a mximum of 2.8 V on the DIO Une
ai powerup. You can substitute smaller resistor vales to lowerthe voltage
drop or to provide a margin forV c c variations and other factors. However,
smaller vales will draw more current, leavmg less sink current for other
circultry connected to this ine. The 5.7 kO. resistor wi reduce he amoun
of a logic losv sink current by 0.8 mA wth a 0.4 V output.

Transfer Rates
Max wthNI-DAQ software 50 kbytes/s
Transfer rates are a function of the speed with which your program reads
data from or writes data to the board, and therefore vary with yoursystem,
software, and application. The followingprimary factors control your DIO
board transfer rates:
Computer systern performance
Programrning environment (register-level programming orNI-DAQ)
Programming language and code efficiency
Execution mode (foreground or backgrouud, with background
execution typicaUy using interrups)
Other operatons in progress
Application
For example, you can obtain higher Iransfer rates n a handshaking or data-
transfer applicatio, requiring an average rate, than in a partero generacin,
data acquisition, or waveform generacin applcarion, requiringa constant
sustainable rate.
The mximum rate shown was obtained using a 233 MHz Pentium
computer running NKDAQ and Lab"Windows/CVI software, with interrupt-
based execution, and with DO otfaer high-speed operations n progress.
