Review Q1: This question of inclusive of many concepts in each statement. Humans are
inherently good at critical analysis and finding mistakes, so in such questions, the best way
to proceed is to eliminate options by looking for INCORRECT statements first.

Review Q2: This concept is generally not covered in most books. When it comes to finding
DOF of mechanisms, GATE has not hesitated in asking special cases of redundant links and
redundant DOFs. This is again a special case mechanism having 3 pair of sliding pairs. Make
a note!

Review Q7: The absolute velocity of two links is same at their I-Centre. Angular velocity
ratio theorem has been derived from this same concept only. Most of us know Angular
Velocity Ratio theorem but do not know the basic concept behind it. GATE has asked one
question on this one. Better not forget!

Review Q10: Though it is a very basic question, but there are high changes of making a
mistake while including r.2 . Some of you may take it centrifugal force and take it take the
direction of this acceleration outwards only, which is wrong.

Review Q11: Generally, we only encounter questions which ask for effect of pressure ratio
on interference, but there are a separate list of other parameter as well which either get
affected or stay unaffected with pressure ratio. This question was added to make sure that
you are well aware of the effect of pressure ratio variation on other parameters as well.

Review Q12: This concept has been asked in both ESE 2017 mains and prelims. Most of us
are aware of this concept in its theoretical form that: base circle is an inherent property of
gears, but are unaware of how to use it in a numerical. This was a perfect numerical to
apply this concept. We have keenly observed that a lot of aspirants are unaware of what

Review Q14: Most of the questions asked from Gear Trains are easy and process-driven.
However, for those who do not understand line diagrams, solving such scoring question
gets difficult. Since, line diagrams based question has been asked in GATE, it is always good
to understand them. Who knows GATE 2018 may become the next entry for line diagrams!

Review Q15: When we deform a body elastically, it tends to regain its original shape We
learnt in SOM. Though it is question of TOM, but it applies the same concept. SOM TOM,
bhai bhai!
When the shaft is twisted, it would start acting as torsional spring and torsional stiffness
come into action. GATE has been giving such questions which are combination of concepts
from different subjects.
