CEE 598 NAS/NAO Nonlinear Analysis of Steel Structures Fall 2017

Problem 1: An alternative model for isotropic hardening is the work hardening model. In
this model, the variable describing the expansion of the yield surface is the plastic work,
Wp. The evolution equation is
dW p d p
Note that since d p sign ( ) and 0, dWp 0. Hence, Wp strictly increases with the
plastic deformation, which makes it useful as an isotropic hardening variable. The yield
function takes the form
f ( ,W p ) ( Y LW p ) 0
where L is a material constant that is determined experimentally.
(a) Use the consistency condition to derive an expression for the yield parameter such
as = (, ).
(b) Similar to the case of linear hardening, the work hardening model implies a shape
for the stress-strain curve. Use the result of part (a) to derive this shape. Plot the
strain-stress graph for an ASTM A36 steel (E = 29000 ksi, Y = 36 ksi, U = 65
ksi) and L = 100.

Problem 3: The bar ab in Fig. 1, connected to the ground through a nonlinear spring,
represents a W 8x21 steel beam with an end embedded in a concrete member. The stiffness
of the spring is given by

Determine the vertical displacement of point b for a load P = 8 kips and a length Lab = 60
in. Use:
1. Eulers Method
2. Runge-Kutta (midpoint) method

3. Compare both solutions with the exact solution where for the

Comment on your results. How can the approximate method solutions be improved?

Problem 4: Obtain the lateral load displacement response of the frame shown in Fig. 2
using:
1. A linear elastic analysis (use hand calculation or any structural analysis software
available). Consider W = 100 kip.
2. A 1st order inelastic analysis using the simplified beam model presented in class.
3. A 1st order inelastic analysis using Mastan2.
Consider ASTM A36 steel, the loads are applied proportionally and there are no global or
local instabilities. Plot the load-displacement responses up to 10% drift in a single graph
and comment on the differences.
